Alyssa (nixit) So here's my crazy idea.

All of the Witches and Wizards in Harry Potter are descended from ancient Aes Sedai, who through some cataclysm lost the ability to channel on their own and so created angreal to allow them access to the one power. Eventually these angreal became known as wands.

This is why only some people in the HP universe are able to become witches/wizards, because they either have the spark, as Harry Potter did, in which case they will eventually channel on their own but still require an an angreal to focus their energy, or are otherwise able to be taught how to channel.

The HP Universe is littered with magical artefacts which nobody understands the use of, such as the Mirror of Erised and Godric Gryffindor's Sword, which are in fact angreal, sa'angreal and ter'angreal.

In fact the "veil" in the Ministry of Mysteries which Sirus Black fell into, killing him, is a ter'angreal whose original purpose has been lost.

Just sayin'

Yes, more backstory would be nice, wouldn't it? Maybe we could kidnap J.K.Rowling and force her to write it under threat of the Cruciatus curse...
