Is A Game of Thrones hard to follow and understand?

Please let me know!

No, but it is complex and rich. There are many three dimensional, fascinating characters, realistic cultures and subcultures and unexpected twists of plot that defy conventional literature paradigms. It is almost like real history of another world rather than a fantasy novel. The hardest thing about it is reading the whole series then having to wait for the next book.

Not really that hard to follow, great series. Great characters, can't wait til the next one. HBO does a good job but if you're not reading, you're really missing out. I agree with Alex, this has also become one of my all time favorite literary experiences as well!

It gets a bit confusing in A Storm of Swords and A Feast of Crows when he splits up the story line based on location rather than time, but other than that it's actually not that hard to follow.

Just a note, it's A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons that were split. Though every book after the first interact chronologically in interesting ways.

But this has become one of my all-time favorite literary experiences. It can be challenging but in the best possible ways. Read it :)

Definitely worth the read, but he does throw a LOT of characters at you in a short amount of time. Getting down all the houses and relationships can be difficult. (Hint: the backs of the books have index guides to help) Good luck!

Read the first three, but by the fourth i was tired of keeping track of all the characters and the kingdoms. Maybe I need a Game of thrones for dummies.

There are a lot of characters and houses to keep track of, but that's the only thing I've found difficult. I've only read the first three books, tho. Not sure if I'll continue. It's been over a year since I read ASoS, and I've already forgotten so much. I would re-read, but the books are long as hell and really not interesting enough to read twice, imo.

Good luck! It's a wild ride. Don't get attached to any characters. No one is safe.

It's hard to keep all the secondary characters straight, but that doesn't mean you won't like it.

If all else fails there's a couple of excellent fan sites and wikis on the net.

Everytime i thought "Aha! they are in alliance with them" everything shifted. I gave up 100 pages from end of last book (guess i should read those 100 pages :P ). I started following the series now. Atleast there is action :p

I didn't think keeping track of who was related whas that hard, maybe because I feel every other page was spent on going over it again.

My biggest problem with these books was that they were so boring I had trouble forcing myself through them and people kept saying "it gets better int he next book" and it really didn't.
