Justin (designinvan) | 2 comments After reading about the weaponized drones legalized in North Dakota, I'm in the mood for some recently written near-future novels based on the police militarization, loss of privacy, government surveillance, government corporatization, etc.

What would George Orwell write about if he wrote 1984 today?

Stephen Oram (stephenoram) | 21 comments Hi. This might not be what you're after because it's not militarization, but it is near-future with corporations (rather than police) controlling people and contains loss of privacy and surveillance (via social media) etc.

I think it's modern Orwellian but I must declare my interest - I wrote it.

Anyway - if it's the sort of thing you're after, great. If not - sorry to have distracted you...

Sounds interesting anyway, Stephen! I will check it out. I just have a general interest in how the current political trajectory may play out.

Papaphilly | 156 comments I think George Orwell would have written something like The Tomorrow File if writing the book today. I am not saying it is a better book because it is a true masterpiece, but it is a bit more subtle.

Chris Dietzel (chrisdietzel) | 115 comments Hi J-ray. I absolutely hate mentioning my own books and have a rule against posting anything about them on boards like this, but The Theta Timeline is a 100% match for what you're talking about.

Okay, I need to go wash my hands now.

Chris (kingtermite) | 48 comments Although, YA in style, I would say The Hunger Games kinda fits that description.
