“ i see humans, but no humanity ╾ Astrid can see her district suffering. Born and raised as the daughter of the Head Peacekeeper, her life is nothing but privileged. She doesn't starve. She never has to work. She isn't assaulted by peacekeepers. But she isn't sheltered. For most her life, she has observed District 12 and stood on the sidelines while it crumbled at the hands of her father and his soldiers.

Astrid remained a bystander until she turned 12. After walking away from her first Reaping, her parents realised she was no safer from the Hunger Games than the Mayor's children. So, should she be reaped, her father—having served as a Peacekeeper for 20 years—trained her. Astrid was turned from a sentient yet innocent child into a warrior. Having no access to guns, Astrid learned to wield swords and spears, and even became quite skilled in archery. But her training came at a price.

Her father was forceful and ruthless. The training was no walk in the park; he verbally abused her, wounded her when they fought. Astrid would sometimes cry to herself at the end, and by the time she was eighteen she was an intelligent and almost merciless fighter, but she was traumatised and despised her father. Her mother tried to coax him to be gentler, but the Head Peacekeeper always insisted that the training was necessary. He had served in District 1 and 2, observed the Careers and how they prepared themselves for the games. He even suggested, when Astrid was older, that she volunteer but Astrid refused. It didn't matter—she was reaped for the games at eighteen, without volunteering.

“ please don't let my heart turn cold ╾ As a child, Astrid was a lot more knowledged and aware of life than she was innocent and happy, like most children. She knew that people in her district were constantly abused. She knew what the Hunger Games were and why they happened. Astrid grew to be very observant, mindful and curious, as well as quite sarcastic and witty.

But Astrid is also sombre and cynical. Her endless training ruined her joyfulness and sense of humour, destroyed her innocence. But despite this, she still has a bit of kindness and optimism, deep down inside her. She can kill, but it isn't easy. She doesn't want to be ruthless╾she wants to be peaceful, and just chill out. But this is the Hunger Games, and she will do anything to survive..
