I actually preferred the shorter novella version ("At the Eschaton") that appeared in the four-story anthology Far Futures, but both were good.

I thought it might be The First Immortal, but Tomorrow and Tomorrow sounds way more likely.
The problem with both of them is that they were published in the late 90s, which doesn't fit with Roger reading them as a teen (his profile says he's 45 years old).

Book was about a married couple both musicians the wife dies because of (cancer?) and husband has her frozen. He can't stand to live without her and has himself frozen as well at death. thousand years later he is revived because he has now become famous for his music.
She is not revived. He goes back and is frozen again at least two more times over the next ten thousand years trying to find a way to save her. Finally many years later he is revived because he is the only one who remember what war was like and they feel earth is threatened by a mysterious force.
He clones himself many times and goes into the universe to discover the source of the earth threat.
I loved this book as a kid and would love to find it again!
