I've read 6 of them already - possibly seven. Edit - make that 5 finished, one unfinished.

I was intending to read a Willa Cather this month - could read One of Ours if I can get my kindle connected

Ace (aceonroam) I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird.

Lesley | 1594 comments I'm going to read The Custom of the Country (New York Public Library Collector's Editions) by Edith Wharton by Edith Wharton

I've not read any of hers! Seen the movies/tv series of various books she's written, but not this one.

Lesley | 1594 comments I have read the first five chapters of The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton in which we meet the main character Undine Spragg, self-absorbed, vain, snobbish young lady that is horribly indulged by her parents. So much so, that, even though they can't afford to, she has persuaded them to move to New York so she can break into the social scene.

Not read any Edith Wharton before, but liking her writing style in this book anyway.

I've read three but also have March and Gone with the Wind on my bookshelf. I'm a bit behind in my yearly challenges though so may have to focus my reading on that.

Darkpool | 1032 comments I also have a copy of March on my bookshelf. Unlikely to read it this month tho, as I have a chunky historical waiting at the library.

tehehe I haven't read any of these books and I don't think any are on my TBR... how Uncivilised of me! Will let you know if I read something from this list but it's not likely.

Ace (aceonroam) Sharlene, feeling a bit uncivilized myself, haven't heard of the majority of these books and/or authors!

Just finished To Kill A Mockingbird and reading The Color Purple in the next few months. I think I will give The Age of Innocence a go, but probably not till next year...

5* reads for me Age of Innocence, Gone With the Wind, The Colour Purple, Beloved
4* The Shipping News
DNF The Good Earth.

Other than Age of Innocence all read a long time ago. Other than planning to read the Willa Cather, I'm pretty sure I have The Stone Diaries in the house somewhere. I have put Message From the Goon Squad on one of my to-read lists, but won't be before Dec - so outside the time .this challenge.

Ace I haven't heard of quite a few of those authors either. I'm expecting they haven't worn well.

I've now acquired Breathing Lessons, but unlikely to get read this month.

Lesley | 1594 comments I very much enjoyed The Custom of the Country. I don't know much about Edith Wharton nor am I familiar with her works, but after reading this I certainly intend reading more and finding out about her.

This book was very much a satire, and possibly like Kathleen, I wasn't meant to find it so humorous but several times I laughed out loud. Except at her treatment of her son Paul - ugh. Undine managed to marry four times, although had only three husbands, in her quest to better her social standing (in her eyes). She never changed much from the vain, self-serving, despicable woman she started as. She was a truly wonderful character with a marvellous supporting cast, and I'm sure in the period it was written it was a story ahead of its time.
