Aleem (meelapo) | 5 comments I have a number of Kindle books purchased from Amazon that do not show up as "owned" on Audible. Is there any reason why this happens? For example, I have the book "The Bonehunters" on my Kindle but when I go to Audible it doesn't show that dialogue that says something along the lines of "...because you own the Kindle book your special price is...". I've gone through Audible tech support and Kindle tech support and no one can explain why this is so.

I don't mind paying the member price however I'm guessing I won't be able to use Whispersync if Audible doesn't think I have the ebook and vice-versa.

Any suggestions?

You won't see the discount price if the book is not a Whispersync deal. Not all Kindle books are on Whispersync.

It has to be the same book product - if the book was self-published and then was bought by a publisher it'll get a new ASIN and the system won't consider it the same book.

I have run into it a lot with successful self-published books that have been bought by one of Amazon's publishing houses - Thomas Mercer, Montlake, 47 North, etc.

Aleem (meelapo) | 5 comments Is there a way to even tell if it's the same book? Here's the Audible version:

and here's the Kindle version:

http://www.amazon.ca/Bonehunters-Mala...

I don't know where to even look for a difference.

In this case, I think it may be due to a digital rights issue since US customers can't purchase the kindle book. The laws vary greatly between regions and countries. Digital rights can be very complex and one publisher may own rights to kindle book while another owns audio rights.

I am sorry I couldn't be more help.

Eta - This is the Kindle book, published by MacMillan, that is associated in the US with the Audible book.

If it is any consolation the price for the Kindle book ($9.99) and the Audible companion ($3.99) is more than the member price for the Audible book ($12.24)

Karen B. (raggedy11) don't know if this answers your question but I often buy both the Kindle book and the audible book so that I can have immersion reading (I retain more when I both see and hear the words). If it is not a whisperysync book, I simply play the audible in the background while reading on the Kindle Fire HDX. What I have found is that sometimes the audible that is separate and not whispersync has a few words that are different, very minor differences but not enough to interfere with my understanding and reading/listening together. Hope this helps.

Aleem (meelapo) | 5 comments Thanks for all the help. I'm also thinking it might be some weird licensing issues with Canada and the US. The silly thing is that I can't take advantage of the reduced prices for owning the ebook.

Hey Aleem, Audible Social Support here. In regard to Whispersync for Voice titles, although you may own one version of a book, that doesn't necessarily mean that you own the Whispersync companion for the Audible version of that title. We're currently still converting titles to ensure compatibility, so we're truly sorry for any inconvenience caused. To reference your Kindle library against existing Audible Whispersync titles, you can actually log into Amazon.com/matchmaker which aligns your Kindle books with the matching Audible narration if it's available. Here's a second link which explains a bit more about Whispersync for Voice and Immersion Reading: adbl.co/ImmersionWS4V. We hope this information is useful. Feel free to email us anytime at [email protected] if you need additional assistance. Take care!

Thanks, Audible.com. I have been using the matchmaker and it's been helping me identify which books have the Whispersync companion and which ones don't.

I don't know if you'll monitor this thread but even though I don't own the WhisperSync for voice title and I purchase the book at the member price will there be WhisperSync available? For example, with that same book "The Bonehunters" it states that WhisperSync is available so I'm assuming if I buy audiobook I should have the WhisperSync functionality.

Audible Support (audible_com) | 260 comments Hey Aleem! Absolutely. You'll still be able to utilize the Whispersync feature, as far as syncing your position read across your mobile device via our app, whether or not you own the paired items. The discount comes into effect when you purchase the Kindle book first, then follow the Whispersync link to Audible or add the narration directly from Amazon or the Kindle store. If you own both the Kindle and Audible versions of a Whispersync book, you'll be able to sync your positions read and listened via the mobile apps. Hope this helps!
