We visited Powell's when my husband had a conference in Portland. We took the train and it was great fun. I spend an afternoon at Powell's. Huge store and all kinds of multilevels.

Deborah:

I take it you are reading John Connolly's "Every Dead Thing?" Oh, Boy. You will like it. A bit gruesome but a really good book. I really like the Charlie Parker series, but there are more than one Charlie Parker series out there by different authors.

Deborah Yeah Cameron the John Connolly: Every Dead Thing. Probably the most gruesome start to any book I've read, up there with Silence of The Lambs! Loving it!

I think I'm going to have to seriously read this soon. Luckily the first four books come as a ereader boxset. Individually they're not cheap!

I recently bought I Am Malala The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai . I've known of her backstory and wanted to read what she had to say. It's a very interesting story, although somewhat repetitive which made me quit reading a little bit after half of the story. I didn't mind the price of the printed version as I hope she gets as much of the proceeds as possible.

message 1270: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Oh yes Ter'e I love Thomas Harris, Red Dragon my favourite!
Janet I managed to get the first 2 in lovely hardbacks for 1p on amazon marketplace, then £2.80 postage. That's where I buy most books now, that's if I'm not waiting on new book being published, otherwise it's full price! As I've no patience. Some great bargains. X

Tis a bargain, Deborah! I haven't read Red Dragon either, though I've watched pretty much every incarnation of Hannibal!!

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments Just a curious question for those of you in the UK????
Here in the states we have the DAV, Salvation Army, Goodwill and etc. These are thrift stores from which people drop their unwanted goods.
I am proud to say, I frequent one or two of them weekly. I love getting a great bargain. I love the thrill of the hunt and all that.

I get some of the greatest barbains on second hand books. Many times on Amazon, I order books from the Goodwill, if they are listed there.

What do you have, in tour country, that compares? In FL, we even have Goodwill Bookstores. They are just the best!!!!!

We have charity shops!!! Set up by charities themselves, usually. Markets, second hand bookstores! We don't live in the dark ages here??!!! :-)

message 1274: by Ter'e (new)

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments LOL Janet.
Well since I have never been to the UK........I had no idea if you had something as simple as this. Alot of people would not step foot in a Goodwill Shop. I have no qualms about doing this.
When my daughters and I get together, this is the first thing we head to!!!!! All three of us have cute, repurposed houses.
Yes, I could see that a charity shop would be the perfect likeness.
Smarty pants!!!!!

message 1276: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Ter'e my sister is addicted to charity shops! Yesterday she bought me brand new pair of designer shoes for £5 that's around $3.20!
When my mum is over, we go round them all! I mostly look for books and have known to arrive home with 20+ on a good day :)
In my town we have, cancer research, barnados, Red Cross, age concern, oxfam and another 2 cancer charities and an African missionaries charity! So quite a few an belfast is even better. But some people here would be embarrassed to go in, doesn't bother me at all!

Just bought on my kindle

The Crucifix Killer (Robert Hunter, #1) by Chris Carter

and

The Accident by Chris Pavone

Both less than £2.00 yesterday on Amazon

message 1278: by Ter'e (new)

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments Deborah,
It doesn't bother my family at all. Last week I bought 4 darling skirts for my daughter, a hand painted tray (she collects rhem) and a brand new pair of very comfy dress shoes!!!!!

Once the clothes are washed and the shoes are disinfected.........who cares. My best buy, for me so far, was a brand new pair of Mephisto sandals (value $170.) for $13. I love deals like that!!!!!

I get almost all my cookbooks at The GW Bookstore. And many novels, too.

message 1279: by Deborah (new)

Deborah My sister got my 16 yr old a lovely Superdry shirt yesterday too, in the wash and he won't know the difference, or care as long as it's clean! He was always embarrassed when I would go in to the charity shops,my 9 yr old son loves it! He will go straight to a staff member and ask if they have any football tops and give his size...cracks us all up! :) when I go home to Glasgow to visit my mum it's the first thing we do; coffee stop, charity shops and again, last September I had to borrow a suitcase to bring everything I bought home but had to leave a few books. Love them!

message 1280: by W.E. (new)

W.E. Lawrence I have recently bought The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway , and c Carnal Gift (Blakewell/Kenleigh Family Trilogy, #2) by Pamela Clare , and Dangerous Temptations by Brooke Cumberland , and Tempting the Corporate Spy (Entangled Brazen) by Angela Claire

Nothing wrong with charity shops. Depends a lot where you live too. The more affluent areas have some great stuff. I just hate shopping full stop.

Headway is my favourite - all the paperbacks in our headway are 50p - I am like a pig in clover when I go in there! It also helps that my son volunteers there on a Saturday and he is always bringing me books home that he thinks I might like. However, because the ladies there dote on him, they never charge him for them, so then I feel guilty about getting freebies from a charity shop.

Good suggestion, T!

message 1286: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Barnados is 3 paperbacks for £5 then one up the rd is 4 for £1! Some just randomly mark them.
But I have picked up so many hardback first editions in charity shops it's unbelievable.
I love charity shops with huge collections of books. I could stay for hours.
When I plan to go to town its usually, what myself and sister call a 'book haul' day! Lots of heavy lifting!

message 1287: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (autumnmemory80) I just recently bought The Chocolate Thief (Amour et Chocolat) by Laura Florand, actually the entire series, and also most of the series by Jessica Beck called The Donut Shop Mystery. I am really excited to get these books in. I have a feeling the Jessica Beck series is going to be a cozy mystery type book. Cannot wait to get them!

Elaine | 146 comments Its Mothers Day today and I know that I have two new paperbacks from the boys. I gaven them a list of about 8 that I would like to pick from and circled the one I wanted most - Suite Française. It was a book club read a few years ago and for some reason I only read the first 50 pages or so and never got round to finishing it, although I remember I really liked what I did read. I always meant to get it and read it properly but never got round to it. Son No.1 did say when he got back from shopping "we got you the french one and another off your list". So I am in for a good read :D

message 1298: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 235 comments I read Suite Francaise with our local book group several years ago. That was before I started reviewing - which is mainly to jog my aging memory! I liked it, though.

message 1299: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 146 comments I remember I liked what I did read, even though it wasnt much. The other book I got was Still Alice so I did quite well.

message 1300: by Kath (new)
