My wife and I are going to Portland in May for our 20th anniver..."
We visited Powell's when my husband had a conference in Portland. We took the train and it was great fun. I spend an afternoon at Powell's. Huge store and all kinds of multilevels.

Deborah:
I take it you are reading John Connolly's "Every Dead Thing?" Oh, Boy. You will like it. A bit gruesome but a really good book. I really like the Charlie Parker series, but there are more than one Charlie Parker series out there by different authors.

Yea and if the libraries have ebooks then a lot of the issues disappear"
Amen Perri.

894 pages to this baby!!!!!
Have any of you read it???? I just know it's going to be great........it's just intimidating!!!!! Like a Ken Follett book!!!!

I read it centuries ago. If it is the same book I remember it is a lot of spy stuff in the cold war

Deborah wrote: "Yeah Cameron the John Connolly: Every Dead Thing. Probably the most gruesome start to any book I've read, up there with Silence of The Lambs! Loving it!"
I think I'm going to have to seriously read this soon. Luckily the first four books come as a ereader boxset. Individually they're not cheap!

I recently bought
. I've known of her backstory and wanted to read what she had to say. It's a very interesting story, although somewhat repetitive which made me quit reading a little bit after half of the story. I didn't mind the price of the printed version as I hope she gets as much of the proceeds as possible.

Janet I managed to get the first 2 in lovely hardbacks for 1p on amazon marketplace, then £2.80 postage. That's where I buy most books now, that's if I'm not waiting on new book being published, otherwise it's full price! As I've no patience. Some great bargains. X
Tis a bargain, Deborah! I haven't read Red Dragon either, though I've watched pretty much every incarnation of Hannibal!!

Here in the states we have the DAV, Salvation Army, Goodwill and etc. These are thrift stores from which people drop their unwanted goods.
I am proud to say, I frequent one or two of them weekly. I love getting a great bargain. I love the thrill of the hunt and all that.
I get some of the greatest barbains on second hand books. Many times on Amazon, I order books from the Goodwill, if they are listed there.
What do you have, in tour country, that compares? In FL, we even have Goodwill Bookstores. They are just the best!!!!!
We have charity shops!!! Set up by charities themselves, usually. Markets, second hand bookstores! We don't live in the dark ages here??!!! :-)

Well since I have never been to the UK........I had no idea if you had something as simple as this. Alot of people would not step foot in a Goodwill Shop. I have no qualms about doing this.
When my daughters and I get together, this is the first thing we head to!!!!! All three of us have cute, repurposed houses.
Yes, I could see that a charity shop would be the perfect likeness.
Smarty pants!!!!!

When my mum is over, we go round them all! I mostly look for books and have known to arrive home with 20+ on a good day :)
In my town we have, cancer research, barnados, Red Cross, age concern, oxfam and another 2 cancer charities and an African missionaries charity! So quite a few an belfast is even better. But some people here would be embarrassed to go in, doesn't bother me at all!

It doesn't bother my family at all. Last week I bought 4 darling skirts for my daughter, a hand painted tray (she collects rhem) and a brand new pair of very comfy dress shoes!!!!!
Once the clothes are washed and the shoes are disinfected.........who cares. My best buy, for me so far, was a brand new pair of Mephisto sandals (value $170.) for $13. I love deals like that!!!!!
I get almost all my cookbooks at The GW Bookstore. And many novels, too.

Nothing wrong with charity shops. Depends a lot where you live too. The more affluent areas have some great stuff. I just hate shopping full stop.
Here in Jersey we have charity shops.
Red Cross
Blind Society
Jersey Hospice
Headway
etc...
Always lots of books, but now finding them cheaper on my kindle new.

Headway is my favourite - all the paperbacks in our headway are 50p - I am like a pig in clover when I go in there! It also helps that my son volunteers there on a Saturday and he is always bringing me books home that he thinks I might like. However, because the ladies there dote on him, they never charge him for them, so then I feel guilty about getting freebies from a charity shop.

Elane --- slip them a little anonymus donation!!! Clear your conscience.

But I have picked up so many hardback first editions in charity shops it's unbelievable.
I love charity shops with huge collections of books. I could stay for hours.
When I plan to go to town its usually, what myself and sister call a 'book haul' day! Lots of heavy lifting!

I just downloaded (because obviously I don't have enough books in my life!!) My Sister's Grave
£1 at the minute here in the UK.
