David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 1127 comments If you want dark fantasy, Aymen, try Wizard's First Rule. be warned though, if you do enjoy it, it's a 15 book series.

Faouzia | 252 comments Aymen wrote: "Did anyone read Harry Potter? I like fantasy but it has to be a bit dark and scary, so what do you think? Should i start reading the series.?"

I watched all the Harry Potter movies, Aymen, and i'm reading the serie this year, i got to the 4th book and it's good!!
The thing is that with every book the story gets better, i like this one more than the two first books!
So, i think reading only a bit of the first book won't be enough ;)

Tom Mathews | 671 comments I just bought Nocturnes by John Connolly by John Connolly. This collection of stories follows book 4 in his Charlie Parker series.

message 1455: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh Thank you Faouzia, i ll try to read few pages of Harry Potter to see if i like it, but i m thinking about reading "the Lord of the Rings" first, what do you think?

Each book in the series, does reach a satisfactory conclusion, though. Kind of one individual story within each book, with an overarching story that runs the entire series. I have them all on my shelf :~)

I think you should start with the lord of the rings (only 3 parts LOL), i liked it better than the movies and found it very interesting :)

message 1458: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh Thanks Faouzia, i will do that :) David i think i can give it a try if like you said each book has a satisfying conclusion, not like Game of Thrones :)

message 1459: by John (new)

John (jkbrown2) Are you kidding! Harry Potter is awesome. The entire series is excellent. I enjoyed the movies, but the books are far better. Of course I also loved LOTR and am getting ready to read it again. Certainly two of the best series out there. As to which is darker, I would say LOTR. But both Harry Potter and LOTR are not to be missed.

message 1460: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh Thanks John, i think i have to read them both, maybe i will start with LOTR.

message 1461: by John (new)

John (jkbrown2) Speaking of LOTR, just last night I ordered the 50th Anniversary hardback edition from Amazon. Can't wait to read it again!

message 1462: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh Awesome! I can t wait to read the books, i saw the movies long time ago, i don t remember much, but they were good, i expect the books to be better.

message 1491: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments HAHAHAHA Janet!!! Now you can see you you can get more books. I love that!! Gosh, I couldn't see the blackboard in 2nd grade and have had glasses (which never come off except to sleep) since then, Being without them would be as weird to me as wearing them is weird for you. Think of them as a fashion statement, Janet. And yes indeedy, you will get used to them, particularly since they are making reading even better for you.

I cannot believe you have NEVER had an eye test before, Janet. I've
probably had over 60 of them...

Totally true, in fact I was expecting something kind of horrible outcome because I've always known my right eye wasn't quite right. It turns out the lens when being formed at birth (or before) isn't quite straight, there's a slight curve so it affects vision. Either that or my optician was lying to me! Not a lack of vision just a slight defect that I was born with. Have just got old age deteoriation which happens to be the best of us I suppose. I guess I did well to last this long. Distance is fine, it is just reading, couldn't read the tiny print on jars and stuff. So now when I put them on I look up and everything is a blur ... lol ... it's weird. I tried to choose trendy designer frames.... possibly failed miserably. They feel so alien!

message 1493: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Boy, sounds like you need bifocals, Girlfriend. Join the crowd! I have the opposite issue that you have. I can read any fine print right in front of my face, but you would be totally fuzzy if you stood 2 feet in front of me.
Yep, I bet they feel alien, but truly, you will get used to them. Do they make a big difference for you?

message 1494: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5302 comments Mod
I can see distance fine, in detail. Just struggled with tiny, fine print so they are just for reading books, doing paperwork, that type of thing. Don't really need them for devices, computer etc, because fonts can be made bigger! Oh the irony. It does bug me how in books, especially paperback typefaces seem to be getting smaller and smaller. Don't think I'll ever prefer actual books to a Kindle again. They're so much easier to hold and comfortable on the eyes.

message 1495: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments I have worn glasses since my early 20's. Like Christine, I can't see distance and after 40, have trouble reading up close print. Bifocal strong!!!

I have been buying more print books since learning from the news that backlight on devices can cause sleep problems - can't get to sleep because the brain thinks it's still daytime. I have struggled with this in the past few years - huh, I wonder if that's the problem???

message 1496: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5302 comments Mod
There could be something in that, Pat. But then it could be that people are just automatically more drawn to them than ever before. Wherever you go now people are on devices of some description everywhere. Borders on the ridiculous really.

message 1497: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments That was one point made by the doctor on the news talking about this. We are addicted to devices and people obsess and cannot get off their devices. But all that bright light in the eyes is confusing our brain signals that its night time and we should be getting sleepy. Recommendation was no phones, tablets etc. one hour before bed.

message 1500: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I slept crappy even before devices were invented. I need that last hour to catch up on reading, lol. My main likes with reading on devices is that they are indeed easier to hold. If you are at a table you don't even have to hold it. I can eat snacks and read at the same time. Really handy when I'm cracking peanut shells. Also LOVE the search button when I forget who someone is. Oh, and by using the iPad Kindle app I can read and check email all at once. Almost.
