Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments I have had glasses since grade 7, and I couldn't see the blackboard, from the back of the room. Five years ago I had cornea transplant and cataract surgery, in my left eye. Now I have 20/20 vision in that eye, but am waiting for the same surgery in the right eye, as I can only read the 1st line. I hate to go in the car, because I get dizzy, because both eyes are fighting for what I see. See my Surgeon in mid July and hope to hear when my surgery date will be. When I am finished, I might be lucky and not need glasses, as they also put a magnifying glass in there. I currently have reading progressive(bifocals), and the same prescription in my sunglasses plus 6 bottles of drops to use 3XDay for life. We all get by.

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Wow, Sue. That's quite the ophthalmologic history. Good thoughts that you can get that surgery on your other eye soon!

message 1503: by Sue (new)

Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments Yes, then I won't drive everyone crazy in the car, because my eye sight is distorted.

Hasn't your ophthalmologist suggested some way of equalizing your vision enough so that you don't get the dizziness/headaches? I'm going to need surgery in just my left eye and my surgeon discussed several options including medically necessary laser surgery in the right eye?

message 1505: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Definitely hope the surgery comes soon for you Sue. And Chris, you are a good example of what the doctor described. Reading on the IPAD before bed. I have e-ink readers which helps (?) but seem to be going back to books.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 5101 comments Just bought Finders Keepers (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #2) by Stephen King . It is sitting on my bedside table, calling me.......I will look at it longingly for the next three or so weeks (staff on annual leave so working longer shifts) before I give in and pick it up. Because I know once I start....8:D

Hi Tom. My ophthalmologist surgeon, said I have a hereditary condition, with the breakdown of the cornea. No action and you are blind. My great grandfather was blind, and probably suffered from it. My surgeon can not do the cataract surgery, to help clear the fuzziness, because it causes the cornea to breakdown faster. These transplants last for 15-20 years, so they space them out, and do one and then do another. Laser surgery will not help me. Thanks Tom.

Thanks for the explanation. I've had several surgeries for glaucoma in my left eye to the point where I have cataracts in that eye. The other eye probably won't need surgery for another 10-15 years so we've discussed options such as a contact in one eye, RK or laser surgery, or even a lens replacement in the eye without cataracts. Kaiser has agreed to cover these options but when it comes to my sight I have a don't mess with what's only slightly broken attitude. Not being able to read is just not an option.

message 1511: by Sue (new)

Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments I also have glaucoma, and use drops at night for that.

Tom Mathews | 671 comments Sue wrote: "I also have glaucoma, and use drops at night for that."

Drops weren't working so I've had two trabeculectomies (and three revisions). Fortunately I only have it in the one eye, probably due to childhood trauma. It appears that they finally have it stabilized. (fingers crossed)

Janet, when I got my first pair of glasses in second grade, I didn't want to wear them as I figured all the other kids would laugh at me since nobody else wore them. My mom convinced me that because I wore glasses, I was pretty special. I liked that so I wore my glasses. That was the kind of mom I had.

I hear ya, Sue!! My kids had a good laugh but they're over it now.

When I went to a clinic today to have some blood tests done I did point out to my daughter just how many people were wearing glasses from all age groups. A fair few. A sign of the times with all the technology around.

Yep, Christine keeps me pointed in the right direction ... uhh ... just ran into the wall ... I had cataract surgery in both eyes, too and then they had to go back in one and cut a window in their because it was re-attaching. Yep, I wear glasses, too.

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Hi Cam!! Why are you running into walls, buddy?

message 1524: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Janet - glasses are a great accessory. So many styles, colors, etc. Have fun with it all! I had a pair with some rhinestones no less and when my daughter needed reading glasses, she took those frames and loves them.

It looks like Amazon will have a sale on the 15th but you may need to be a Prime member.

Are you sure you aren't thinking about Kindle Unlimited? I have Prime and the only things I get for free are 2-day shipping and some instant videos.

Aren't you eligible for one book per month?

Yeah, but quite often they're not great selections. I often don't bother. Kindle First it's called.

Yes, I had the 30 day trial but felt it just did not save me enough money. I mostly purchase Kindle books and any other items will group to $35, which most times gets free shipping.

It looks as if your weekend is planned out for you.

Yes, you do get an option to choose one of four books for free about a month before they are released. I buy enough books and watch enough videos that Prime is worth it. I haven't been tempted to get Unlimited, though.

Me either, Tom. Not really worth it for me. I'm watching Vikings on Prime. An underrated show in my opinion.
