Vikings is great! I've been watching it from the beginning. One Amazon show I want to watch is Bosch, based on Michael Connelly's character.

Isn't it?! I love Vikings I think it's done really well. I'm up to season 3. I've heard great things about Bosch. I'm not sure I'll get around to reading the books so I may just watch.

I look forward to hearing your reaction to Night Films. I've been on the fence for quite a while about it.

Janet, I have only read one Michael Connolly book, but it was a cut above. You might consider at least reading the first Harry Bosch called Black Echo or perhaps a non Harry Bosch called The Poet. He is one of the most popular thriller writers in America. I think you would like his stuff.

Perri | -43 comments Stefanie, I loved Night Film-very creatively done. Harry Bosch on Prime is excellent and very well cast (not looking at you Tom Cruise) I'll have to check out Vikings. Gotten hooked on Sens8 on Netflix. Intriguing premise. Rated R warning

Tom Mathews | 671 comments Inspired by Lynn's haul above, I took the day off to attend an author event by Mary Doria Russell. In addition to getting my copies of Epitaph by Mary Doria Russell and The Sparrow A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle) by Mary Doria Russell (my favorite novel) signed, I also bought signed copies of Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell and Doc by Mary Doria Russell . Also, the folks at the store were able to find a signed copy of Neal Stephenson's Seveneves by Neal Stephenson which I read the first chapter of and am totally hooked on. Finally, I bought used copies of Trapped (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #5) by Kevin Hearne and Tricked (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #4) by Kevin Hearne because my wife is hooked on this series.

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Us too, Pat. Watching the Twins right now. You watch the Pirates?

message 1565: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Yep! We watched the Pirates. They lost tonight and another rain delay. So many rain delays in Pittsburgh - it's crazy.

message 1566: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 1266 comments Okay, I ended up buying 3 books tonight while watching baseball because I was envious of Tom and Lynn - ugh!!!

Got Kill, The Kill, The by Jane Casey , The Doll's House by Louise Phillips The Doll's House, and The Boy In The Woods The Boy In The Woods by Carter Wilson .

I can hear my mother's voice - "If your friends jumped into the river...."

Cameron Wiggins | 369 comments Look at it this way, Chris. When the Twins are rained out they are not losing.

I want to watch The Vikings - have heard a lot of good about that.
And, I really, really want to shag Bosch based on Michael Connelly's character. Do you have to be a Prime member to snag these?

You have to be a Prime member to get them for free. Maybe you could rent/buy them though.

And even when a member not all is free. Some shows still charge per episode.

Nik Krasno | 21 comments Hey Guys,

How did you choose the books you've just purchased? What were the decisive factors, if anyone wants to share with a modest author the intricacies of the reader's soul? -:)

message 1576: by Autumn (last edited Jul 10, 2015 06:28AM) (new)

Autumn (autumnmemory80) I am a librarian by degree, so I do lots of research. I find fun articles on Buzzfeed or similar sites, and do research from there. I will participate in various challenges and find books that meet the criteria and go from there. I find free samples on Amazon and find books that are similar. I find articles that have books similar to my favorite authors or books I have already read. I will look at specific publishers and what is out. If it is self published it is a little more difficult to find, but I do find them. I will search articles on that topic specifically. Does that help?

message 1577: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 21 comments A lot actually! Thanks, Autumn!
I've never even heard about Buzzfeed until now and I only vaguely imagine what various challenges might be, so your reply opens up new venues that I didn't suspect existed

She was delightful! I had actually gone to San Francisco to see her a couple months ago but she had cancelled her tour due to illness so yesterday's event was a reschedule.

I teased her, telling her that she makes it very difficult for readers to recommend her books to others because they alway respond with 'I don't read westerns' or 'I don't read sci-fi'. The truth is that her books are so much more than tnat. I don't know of anyone who has read one of her books who hasn't become an ardent devotee of her works. She is one of only a handful of authors whose books I will preorder regardless of what the book is about.

message 1579: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Sounds intriguing, Tom, as I don't like westerns or Sci Fi.

There are so many books out there that one has to be picky. As I mentioned above there are some authors I trust to write good books because I've read others by them. A lot the new authors I read and a combination of word of mouth, and interesting premise, and promising reviews. I have many friends with similar tastes here at GR and I look through their reading lists to see what they have read and rated highly.

What challenge can I make to get you to put The Sparrow: A Novel on the top of your TBR list? You will not regret it. Her works transcend genre.

message 1582: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Christine, I think the western was referring to Doc and Epitaph. I have Doc on my TBR list, Tom -do I need to move them up? I loved The Sparrow My review: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19759947.The_Sparrow__A_Novel__Ballantine_Reader_s_Circle_

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your input too.
I've collected lots of advice from fellow authors here on GR and now get to hear the readers side of the story. All that, with the aim to understand how to achieve more visibility and desirably buzz, if my books deserve buzzing about, of course-:)
From what I see so far, the previous positive experience is usually rated as the major incentive for purchasing more, while regarding new authors it may vary, but comes down to word of mouth of this or other sort usually

I just finished listening to Doc, read exceptionally well by Mark Bramhall. I recommend it highly but it hasn't displaced The Sparrow as my favorite novel.

I haven't read Epitaph yet but her description of it makes it sound very timely as it involves 2nd Amendment issues, immigration and use of deadly force by authorities.

It also sounds like one of those books that will take a subject that everybody thinks they know all about and totally turn it on its head. Mary originally wasn't going to write a sequel to Doc but the more she learned the more she came to believe that despite thousands of books being written on the subject, an accurate description of the events had yet to be published.

OK, I feel challenged. I will read it as my out of my box science fiction read, but it can't be at top of list yet. I will put it on my "must read" shelf. How about that?

I thought you knew about this site Stefanie. I am sorry I didn't mention it. I order books from either Amazon.ca or directly from Bookdepository.com. I am currently waiting for 2 books-

An Evil Mind
Follow You Home

And based on the order # , it tells you when it has been dispatched.

I guess I was bored today, Christine. I was up today at 5:00A.M. as I had to see my eye surgeon at 7:00A.M.,at the hospital and see when he will do the 2nd cornea transplant and cataract surgery. Holding off until I see him in Oct, and then 2 month wait time for the surgery.
