Sorry to hear that Sue, my Dad has been going through extensive eye surgery and biweekly treatments for over a year. He is in pain all the time and can't see out of one eye which we all know is a recipe for a bad headache. I hope all goes well for you, I will keep you in my thoughts!

Stefanie | 120 comments While I have you all here I have a quick question. I recently joined Netgalley and a friend mentioned that the books get erased from your device on specific dates. Does anyone know where I can find those dates so I know which order to read the books in ?

The books get archived on Netgalley but they're not wiped from your devices once downloaded, I don't think. I've had books for over a year and they're still on my Kindle, well cloud anyway.

message 1606: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie | 120 comments Thanks Janet, I was confused when I heard they get "deleted" because I also have a book that is "archived" and it is still on my Kindle App

Stefanie | 120 comments Aaron(Retrobeat) wrote: "What is Netgalley exactly?"

Sorry Aaron I didn't see your question. I am new to the website so I am sure my explanation will be lacking but I will give it a shot. It is a website marketed for professional reviewers, librarians, booksellers ect . The site offers these individuals the option to read books that recently published or not yet published. You sign up, make a profile, then request to read a book that interests you. The publisher decides to extend a copy to you or not. If they do extend a copy to you they expect a review to be written in return. It seems that the site is a way for authors/publishing houses to get publicity for new novels

Hi Stefanie,

I got "An Evil Mind" yesterday, paperback from Bookdepository.com for $10. "Follow You Home" is to be released the end of July, and I ordered paperback from Amazon.ca for $15, as I collect all of his books. "The Broken" paperback, used from wobcanada for $4.56, "Unravelling Oliver, paperback, used from wobcanada for $2.36 and "Remember Me This Way", paperback for $15.87 from Amazon and "No Motive For Murder", paperback
for $14.85 from Amazon.

Stefanie, Janet explained it properly. When I get approved for a book on Netgalley, I download the book to my Kindle. It shows on Netgalley on my Shelf, and only when I am ready to read it, I move it to the reading shelf, and later provide feedback. While books are listed on your shelf , you can read the column for pub date, and archive date(if available). When it reaches the archive date, the book is removed, but not deleted, from books that you can request, as it then goes out for general pub date to the general public. Everytime you get approved for a book on Netgalley, you approval rating will drop, usually 1 percent, shows under "Your Profile". This percentage level is used, I believe by publishers, for allowing/disallowing your request. After you post your review, the percentage increases 1 percent. I believe I usually keep my level at around 91%.

I don't think the percentage drops or rises by 1 point with each approval or review in all cases, Sue. I think it is a simple ratio of how many books you have been approved for and how many you have reviewed. For example: you have been approved for 10 books and have reviewed 8 of them for a percentage of 80%. You then get approved for 2 more. Your percentage falls to 67% (8/12). You review one more, and your percentage becomes 75% (9/12). In your case, Sue, you have been approved for SO many books and have reviewed SO many books, I wouldn't doubt that your percentage moves slowly with each approval and each review.

Having said all that, I know of many "super reviewers" who have reviewed hundreds of books and who are approved for almost anything despite percentage of reviewed to approved of under 50%.

For what it's worth, I do think us newbies should try to keep our percentages as high as possible to give us maximal chance of getting as many of the books we want approved. Never lose hope though as our Sean has been approved for about 50 books and has reviewed maybe 6-7 of them. I would ask him the secret of his success, but I don't think he knows what it is, LOL!LOL!LOL!!!

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Don't go crazy right off the bat by requesting 20 books, Aaron, as they may come thru for you and you will be way behind from the get go. Try for about 5 and see what happens. You can also start to build your numbers up by picking READ NOW books. They don't require approval, but they do want reviews.

That's true what Christine said. I never like to go above 5 books. Right now I have 6 books. It puts more pressure on you to read faster. Enjoy your BBQ.
