Just go and change the date - if you go to 'my review' and then change date started to today's date (as the default date is USA time) - doesn't matter how far through you are - all that changes is the date.

message 155: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments And so it begins... I am starting with:
4). Title: Read a book with a PLACE NAME in the title.

Norway by Anthony Ham
I am excited!

Over the years, a few people have found it odd that I like to read Lonely planet guide books in the same way that you would read a novel but there are many advantages.

The sections are well organised and concise, so if you have limited reading time (such as a twenty minute break at work) you can fit in a segment of reading comfortably. Perhaps like some people read magazines.

If you know nothing about a country, there is no better way to start. It assumes you know nothing and introduces you to the basics of history, society, culture and everything. They are often written by travellers and that means that the author is seeing the country from the outside as well and can explain things.

Finally, by the end of the book you know if you want to go and what to do if you visit.

1). Geographical Setting: Read a book set in a different country than your own:

The Night of the Mi'raj (Nayir al-Sharqi, #1) by Zoë Ferraris

...and I am hooked. May have to cancel large parts of my life (such as shopping and stuff) until I finish it.

message 173: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) I finished the first challenge:

The King of Kahel by Tierno Monénembo

Aime Sanderval (Olivier de Sanderval) dreamed of going to Africa to find land that had never been seen by a white man before, so that he could set about improving the Negroes, and creating a new Versailles for France. He was determined to be a King. He believed that he could win over the Kingdom Fouta Djallon (Central Guinea) by enlightenment, not by fighting, and he was convinced if he could become one of the Fulas, they would make him a King.

Monenembo has written this wonderful historical fiction, based on the Sanderval's trips to Fouta Djallon. It is rather satirical in nature, and I found the attitudes to be humorous.

Carolyn | 9840 comments I've completed my first for this challenge #2) Travel to a different genre: Country Romance (a genre rarely visited by me) The Saddler Boys by Fiona Palmer 4★

review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This was well written and had an interesting story so I did enjoy it. Growing up in WA, I've also travelled to many of the places mentioned in the book (Lake Grace and Wave Rock) and have relatives who live in small country towns so I enjoyed the setting very much.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

Such a lovely quick read! 4/5 stars!!

Straight into my second book which is #4 Place in Title

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare

Probably should not be participating in this book challenge cause I am about to head into exam period but I really can't help myself.. And I suppose I need a break every now and again.. Well that's my excuse.

message 183: by K (new)

K | 1143 comments Oh gosh Ellie, I hope you enjoy City of Bones. The Mortal Instruments series is a series that is very beloved to me.

message 184: by Ellie (new)

Ellie Brown (ebrown18) | 19 comments Oh so happy to hear that Kiera! I've been meaning to read it for so long! That makes me extra excited to get into this one. :)

message 185: by K (new)

K | 1143 comments It will definitely (hopefully) be an emotional rollercoaster for you, Ellie. Sometimes you'll hate the series, and sometimes you will adore it. I did not even give all of the books in the series 5 stars- far from it! But I think that's why I love it. Because it is not perfect, but the characters are excellent!

message 186: by Sharon (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments 5★ I've just enjoyed a book that has transport on the cover (train tracks and camels) and is coming out next month. It's Judy Nunn's new book, Spirits of the Ghan, and it's got everything you could want: history, mystery, bit of romance, ghosts, art, music, and a bloody big railroad. Many thanks to NetGalley who let me review it . . . https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 189: by Linda (last edited Oct 06, 2015 02:09PM) (new)

Linda Two changes to my list.

For the foreign country - The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth
(Not only is this set in England, but it's time is Norman England and the author has "made up" a language that is understandable to modern readers but captures the taste of Old English)

The Wake A Novel by Paul Kingsnorth
The Wake: A Novel

My Mode of Transportation on the Cover is now TimeStorm by Steve Harrison

(I got this book in a give-away and had set it aside. Moving papers on my coffee table I found it.)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments I have finished my 'Geographical setting' I think I vastly underestimated how long it would take me. But I did really get into it and read quite fast.

The book is The Night of the Mi'raj (Nayir al-Sharqi, #1) by Zoë Ferraris

My review is here:

Is there anything else I need to do to make it off the challenge?

I will have to add that one! My stepdad worked on the first half of the railway line and my ex boyfriend worked on the final part of the railway line laying the sleepers on a piece of equipment called the 'widowmaker' because it was so old and dangerous. Used to go stay in all the little towns as they worked their way up the top end like Adelaide River, Pine Creek & Katherine. I just started reading Territory by Judy Nunn by the same author. "A story of the Top End and the people who dare to dwell there"...
