MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I have finished my third for this challenge. Located in a different geographical setting, Corrag by Susan Fletcher has earned 5★s from me. It is a challenging book to read, but I genuinely loved it. Review to follow, once my emotions settle down!

Have you read Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff? It's the first in a really good trilogy. Or The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson. You have to like fantasy though to enjoy this genre:)

Congratulations, Kiera! And what a wonderful old classic to wrap it up with. The cover alone tempts me to re-read it - it's been an awfully long time. I used to read anything I could find that had horses in it.

I like a bit of sadness in my stories. I get annoyed when things are just TOO perfect in a story, and sometimes I really enjoy an unhappy ending.

Yes but in Black Beauty it is cruelty and to an animal that makes me sad. I hate cruelty to children and animals even in fiction:)

So do I, which is why I find it an important novel for people to read. It's important for these things to be exposed and talked about. The book I am reading right now covers a topic much too close to home for me and I am struggling emotionally with it, but at the same time, I'm glad the book has been written, because again- it exposes a deep issue in our society. Especially since in 1877, animal welfare was a progressive new idea! Anna Sewell was well ahead of her time! What a brilliant woman!

Thanks Phrynne, our book club chose it to read as it is on the Dymocks top 100 and none of us had read it! Will be interesting to see what the others think when we meet tomorrow to discuss it. Certainly not on my top 100 books!

message 345: by MaryG2E (new)

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I managed to finish four titles for the October challenge 'Let's Go Travelling'. It was a great choice for the challenge, and I enjoyed reading a diverse selection of books relating to not being at home.

1). Geographical Setting: Read a book set in a different country than your own.
Corrag by Susan Fletcher 5★s. Historical fiction set in Scotland, tells the story of the Massacre of Clan MacDonald at Glencoe in 1692.

2). Travel to a Different Genre: Read a book from a genre you haven't explored before/for a long time.
The Shiralee by D'Arcy Niland 4★s. A classic of Australian literature published in 1955, this is the story of a swagman and his daughter who travel around outback NSW, mainly on foot, making a life on the road.

4). Title: Read a book with a PLACE NAME in the title.
Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams 4★s. Memoir of a New York journalist who retraces the steps of Hiram Bingham III, who 'discovered' Machu Picchu.

5).Reader’s Choice: Read any book of your choice.
The Martian by Andy Weir 3★s. Lots of travel in this book, from Earth to Mars and back, plus several lengthy excursions by the hero of the story on the surface of the Red Planet.

Carolyn | 9840 comments Here's my review for the fifth and last book in this challenge, #3 Mode of transport on the cover: The Highway by C.J. Box The Highway by C.J. Box 3★

review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This was my first novel by this writer and probably wasn't the best one to start with as I found it a bit of a chore to finish. I'm told his Joe Pickett series is really good.
