For me it would have to he either risk, or this wierd board game that I had when I was young called Atmosphere, where you out a tape Nina vcr and it played as you played this board game as different like crazy demons. It was nuts and I have no idea how we got it.

message 2: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Risk, Stratego, Clue, various trivia games that involve the use of a board.

For the not-quite-board-games, I like Scattegories, Boggle, Jenga, and Uno. I used to be really into the Magic The Gathering TCG.

Turned Jenga into a drinking game in the past. It was glorious. Each piece had a rule of some sort on it that you couldn't see. So when you picked a piece you had to comply with it. Such as give drinks, take drinks and a few others.

message 4: by Andrew (new)

Andrew lol I think my fondest drinking game was one me and my friends came up with while watching Family Guy DVDs every weekend. Made a big poster board of how many drinks to take if this type of joke, or this recurring gag, etc happens. I think I went years without actually having memory of the last half of any season of that show.

Settlers of Catan!

Kristofer Hanson (kristofermhanson) | 73 comments Had a Heroquest when I was a kid... loved it as it was based loosely off of Warhammer. Somehow I lost it, but then found a copy on Ebay that was in great shape so I bought that to introduce it to my daughter.

More a card than board game, but we recently crowdfunded and bought Exploding Kittens. Probably one of the funniest and demented games we have ever played. If you do get it, get the NSFW version.

My favorites are Settlers of Catan and Clue and Fortress America. We also enjoy Magic The Gathering, Star Fluxx, HeroClix, and Guillotine in our house. When I was a kid I played Solarquest and Enchanted Forest a lot.

I've wanted to get into M:TG for a while but it seems like one of those things that if you haven't been with from the start would be very hard to get into or get cards of any value.

There's a difference between valuable cards and useful cards. We have a very random collection, old and new, that is fine for playing with friends even though it won't win tournaments. It's easy to learn and portable, which makes it appealing.

message 10: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Yeah, I agree with Audrey. I've stopped playing for 2-3 years I think, but I always excited to open a new set of cards. New decks that I made from entirely new sets were frequently better than previous ones, and new cards in new sets would replace older cards in older decks.

In fact, I would wager that on AVERAGE, older cards tended to be a ho-hum. There are some really badass cards that the creators didn't realize the true potential of, so they have a low "mana cost" (that makes sense if you played LOL). Some of which are "illegal" to use.

But compared to modern cards...it's hard to explain without knowing the rules, but personally I noticed a lot of older creatures cost a bit too much mana for what they produced, at least compared to more recent creatures. Also--again, personally speaking--I found that the Black cards in particular were just awful until around 5th edition. Then they became one of my favorites.

Anyway, the only "hard" part about it learning how to play, which is picked up pretty easy within a few games. The ANNOYING part, for me, is people who have (d)evolved the game into a statistical science and have these "unbeatable" decks that take advantage of certain rules.

I like just picking a certain theme and rolling with what works for me and is fun. As Audrey said--not going to win tournaments, but so much more fun :)

It is definitely something that appeals to me and at one point had watched videos to learn how to play. I'm just one of those people that like to get on things like this early and grow with the game.

message 12: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I still watch people play on YouTube sometimes lately LOL Day9 had a match with Alan Tudyk (how could I resist). I think if you watched that you can tell that newbies can have an easy time picking up and even winning--provided that their opponent isn't using their uber-deck that they ripped off of some online manual.

I think there are a number of high-rated computer games of it now, though I haven't tried :)

Each new edition (about every year) introduces some new ability or theme, so after so much time, some of them are pretty silly or convoluted. Some of my favorite cards are the oldest ones (some "illegal" but who cares). It's fun and very addictive, but it will destroy friendships if you're not careful. I've also seen fights break out during Settlers of Catan, come to think of it.

message 14: by Kristofer (new)

Kristofer Hanson (kristofermhanson) | 73 comments Hey Lancer, Just pick up MTG 2015 for the tablet... I learned how to play the game through the 2014 version, and costs something like $10 for the initial buy-in and campaign. I have enjoyed it and it plays offline, so great for long trips.

I know this is about the "card" version, but it is a good introduction and way to learn it. You don't have to buy packs of cards as you get rewards packs for winning solo or online battles.

My favorite part has been using decks built around a particular ability, such as a dark/fire deck that builds strength as cards are killed. This is not from some online manual but just something I figured out strategically, and that strategy is one of the funnest aspects of the game.

We got the Firefly board game a couple months ago and are really enjoying it. Does anyone else have it? We are looking at expansions for a Christmas gift to ourselves.

message 16: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments I'm addicted to Settlers of Catan and all its variations (and the app version for when I can't find friends)

I am also overly fond of Zombie Fluxx.

Adam Hero Quest - always! Just need to find a good buy on ebay

Just starting to get into more board games, but I'm currently obsessed with Lords of Waterdeep.

Yeah, not really a board game, but i totally second Cards Against Humanity. Really goes well with my sick sense of humour, i've literally never lost a game!

My favourite board game would have to be Quarto, which is like a kind-of advanced noughts & crosses/tic tac toe type game. super addictive.

Or Upwords, interesting scrabble alternative!

Oh yea, I forget cards against humanity isn't really a board game - I guess I was just going for party games haha

Kristopher - my family still has a copy of Hero Quest! I played it with them when pretty young :)

I also like Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne but also:
Jungle Speed
Munchkin
Bananagrams (being a reader I come up with some awesome words)

My book club plays Cards Against Humanity when we have meetings out in public. It's the most fun when you can actually offend other people.

I've played it, it's hilarious and it makes you feel like you lose a little bit of your soul each time for being a horrible person. :P

I'm also kind of considering buying it to um... introduce to my parents for Christmas board games. With their sense of humour it COULD be hilarious, but it could also be really awkward.

Lol Rinn me and my brother have been debating whether to play with our parents/aunts and uncles. I think some would enjoy it and a few would disown us.

Many hilarious nights with these three games. We love a good board game, going to have to look up all of these.

Oh, I love Balderdash.

My husband and I got two Firefly game expansions for Christmas (one from my mom and one from ourselves). We've been playing nearly constantly since then. :D

Have you heard of Gloom? It's a card game and you win by having your "family" members live depressing lives and then die a depressing death.

My sister got the Logo game for Christmas, and we played it - hilarious! Some really odd categories (my other sister had rounds on such delights as insect spray and stuffing...) and a game that works for all ages, so really good for the family.
