Good for you Celia. I wish I'd been so focused at 17! Maybe then I would have had that 2nd hand bookshop I came to wish for in later life, when it was too late to change direction.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) A warm welcome, Mohsen.....we are glad to have another member from the Middle East. Since you are interested in the history of your country, Iran, you might wast to visit our topic on that subject.

There are many other topics that also may be of interest to you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Thomas Jefferson The Art of Power by Jon Meacham by Jon Meacham Jon Meacham

Here is how the citation for the authors you mentioned should look:

Sarah (sarah_hermes) Hello, I'm Sarah. I usually like to read a variety of fiction and nonfiction, but recently found that I really enjoy reading about history and listening to podcasts. I'm here to get some good suggestions and give back input when I find something great to read. Right now I am interested in British history.

message 658: by Kate (new)

Kate (556329294) Hello! I'm Kate and I live in Virginia. I'm originally from the Boston area and I have strong ties to New England. My particular areas of interest are history relating to the Boston area (particularly the Colonial Era and Revolutionary War), the Victorian Era, and the Plantagenets. I also enjoy books about the World Wars and historical biographies, and I have an interest in medical history.

I'm currently reading Ravensbrück Life and Death in Hitler's Concentration Camp for Women by Sarah Helm by Sarah Helm, which, so far, is the most remarkable books I've read in quite some time.

message 659: by Neil (new)

Neil Hardie | 1 comments Hello everyone. I fell in love with history at grammar school thanks to some inspirational teachers and went on to do a degree in history at Westfield College, University of London 1974-77. They were the best years of my life and although I have never earned a living from history my love of the subject has remained. At university I studied mostly medieval and early modern English and European history. However I have lived in China since 2004 and my interests have widened to include Chinese and modern world history. At the same time I have embarked on researching my family history mostly in Scotland. I am becoming particularly interested in the interaction between individuals such as my ancestors and the bigger historical picture of the times in which they lived.

Historical resources in English are limited in China, as you might expect, and e books are now essential brain food, so I am delighted to be able to join a group of like minded people. For the same reason I am also actively exploring MOOCS. I have recently completed a course on Controversies around the British Empire with Futurelearn.com and next week I am going to start another course on the First World War.

Really looking for recommendations on history explored through the lens of biology, psychology, etc. Anything on pre-agrarian or indigenous peoples societal structures would be wonderful.

My name is Emma and i've just completed my MA in Classical Studies. I am, of course, interested in the Ancient World, but my BA focused on Eastern European history, which I love (especially the Hapsburg Monarchy). Interest number three is the Medieval period. However, my aim in joining this group is to expand my knowledge outside of these areas.

Looking forward to talking to you all.

Hernando Carvalho-Murcia | 1 comments ¡Hola! this is Hernando from Bogotá. I am 31. My favourite genres are history, and historic novels and fiction. Also enjoy biographies. I speak Spanish, English, Portuguese and French AND am currently learning (with great patience) Mandarin. I mention that because for me it is a fabulous experience to read books in their original language. Well, within the topic of history, I am particularly interested in European 'Middle Ages' (formation of modern cities, languages and nations), Modern International History (18th century and forward), and most recently Chinese History. I hate historiography and prefer a more economic scope in books. Cheers!!

Joanne Kinsella (joannebk) | 3 comments Hi guys, my name is Joanne and I'm living in Cork, Ireland. I love to read books of all genres but have to admit my interests lately have brought me more towards historical non-fiction and fiction. I have a great love of Irish and UK history, but more recently have found myself reading a lot about Japanese and Chinese history. This was brought about by my love of Haruki Murakami, Yoko Ogawa and Banana Yoshimoto's books.
Now I'd like to broaden my horizons and learn more about the Israel/ Palestine conflict and its roots, so if anyone has any recommendations on that front it would be much appreciated. Ideally I'd be looking for non-biased accounts but I do realise that's probably going to be difficult to find!
Thanks in advance everyone and I really look forward to contributing to the group in any way I can.
Jo

My name is Randall. I am from Australia and I'm a writer. I have a deep love of historical fiction, primarily between the 1300 and 1700s (folklores and witchcraft being areas of particular interest). I haven't read massive amounts of historical fiction however I want this to change. Hopefully here I can find some good recommendations and discussions. I really look forward to meeting all of you!

Walter (vlodko) Hi - my name is Walter. My interests are 20th Century history, particularly European and especially Eastern European. I'm also interested in literary history and art history, history of science and history of philosophy. Needless to say, literature, and art are also interests.

I'm currently reading Black Earth by Timothy Snyder - I recommend pretty much anything written by Snyder and the late Tony Judt.

I will admit that a fair amount of my reading is actually listening to audiobooks. With much of the history that I listen to, I subsequently get the books in order to refer back to them.

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

Becky hi, I'm Becky. I'm from Connecticut, and I recently started reading presidential bios in order of service. It has recently branched off into just US history. I'm reading about the Panic of 1819 now.

Louis Grumet | 8 comments I love Indian history, especially as it relates to the history of the Ghengus Khan family. What do you recommend reading?

message 694: by Steve (new)

Steve Jones Hi,

My name is Steve Jones. I live in Australia but was born and raised in New Zealand. I am a school teacher.

I grew up reading about dinosaurs and war (thanks to my father's WW2 magazine collection). I really started loving history when I was about 12 and completed a school project on WW1. Since then. I have loved reading military history books. I am also interested in the history of the USSR, the USA in the 20th and 21st century.

I have joined the group hoping to find books and authors that I would like to read and perhaps have discussions about books.

Yunna | 6 comments Bonjour everyone,

My name is Yunna. I live and work in France as a research assistant in Medieval French linguistics and litterature, thus naturally my field of interest covers Middle Ages and history in general. I am particularly thrilled with scholar books depicting manners, everyday life, cuisine, traditions, costume etc. of any given period, as well as biographies.

Elizabeth (theurbanbookcritic) Hi, I'm Lizzie and I'm a history graduate based in the UK. I'm primarily interested in Medieval and Tudor history, but most of my recent research work has focused on the late 19th and early 20th century. I read a broad mix of non-fiction and fiction. Looking forward to broadening my reading with your recommendations and sharing one or two of my own with the group.
