Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Maria. Welcome to the History book club!

Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer. You can access the main page through this link:

HBC mainpage

If you want to be an active member of this group, one of the ways to do so is to be part of our group reads. One of those is the Book of the month project. Check the page to see what's in store for us. :)

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

Callum Soukup-Croy | 2 comments Hi. I'm Callum, 27 years old and love to read history books of all sorts. I often get myself in to cycles where I am reading a book and it makes reference to a war or historical period and then I have to go and read something on that and so on. Favourite topics to read about would definitely be European history from middle ages onwards (still a very broad category I know).

I'm looking forward to seeing what recommendations my fellow members have (as well as making some of my own) and getting involved in discussions.

Razvan Muntea Hello, my name is Răzvan Muntea, I am 26 years old, live in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania and work here as a computer programmer. When I was young, studying in what we call here ”general school”(11-14 years of age) my favorite subjects were Mathematics, English and History. I chose to continue my studies and follow a career in a technical field, but I believe Humanities are also a part of me. I am currently reading Romanian and European History, hoping to get a better idea how different cultures developed and interacted throughout my country and continent, how people lived their lives around here in the past and how the past influences the present.

Mike (glaucus) | 51 comments Good evening. I am a professor of History and Political Science and I like to read and discover new materials that I can offer students. I read mostly history from the modern era, defined as the 15th century to the present. (actually to 1914)(1914 could be considered the post-modern era) I know how can one be post-modern. Please do not ask me to explain. I like to read all kinds of materials in both World History, American History, Latin American History, etc. I specialize in American Politics and Public Policy. Do not ask me to explain Donald Trump, some phenomena are beyond reasonable explanation. I also study Global studies and the effects of NGO's. I am also very interested in Voting Rights and Civil Rights in the US. A never ending evolving topic. I look forward to some great conversations. Though this is a new post, I have been a member for some time.

Mars Smith Hello. My name is Mallory Smith. I am a high school student from the U.S. I just joined this club, today. I love biographies which would be why I am looking forward to reading "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention" from your list of books.

I also love learning about dynasties such as the Chinese dynasties, royal dynasties of England, dynasties of Egypt, and basically any book that you can learn a lot about world history. The main thing I would like to do is slowly better my knowledge on historical figures from different backgrounds such as inventors, ministers, presidents, reformers, and anyone else life would be different without.

As you may have noticed, I have a pretty broad interest when it comes to history books.

message 1117: by Cora (last edited May 19, 2016 01:21AM) (new)

Cora Hi,
I'm Cora, 24 from Belfast, Ireland.

I would consider myself relatively new to the history genre. Despite having a love of history as a subject throughout school and thoroughly enjoying history tv/movies, I have found myself reading historical fiction and historical fantasy more than texts from which I can be assured that what I'm reading is historical fact (at least for the most part, we can excuse a little poetic license). That said, I prefer to read a story rather than factual books.

I enjoy earlier history, say pre-1900 at most. In particular I like areas which are slightly fantasized such as renaissance/medieval, ancient history/legend, roman and greek history, Victorian era, Tudor era etc.

My greatest interest is in Ancient Irish History/Legend.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Sister Fidelma mystey, Atonement of Blood:
Atonement of Blood (Sister Fidelma, #24) by Peter Tremayne by Peter Tremayne Peter Tremayne
However again, these are fictional books and I would like more educational reading around this period of history.

I'm looking forward to everyone's suggestions in these areas but I am equally looking forward to being introduced to new areas of historical writing as I'm a curious person and there's very little that I don't find interesting! :)

Hello! I am a student in the United States interested in history especially after taking AP European History. One of our class requirements was to review a historical book each quarter, and that has exposed me to this genre. I particularly enjoy scientific history and have read about the transition of alchemy to chemistry all the way up to Heisenberg's moral dilemma in the atomic bomb.

Heather | 1 comments Hi! I'm Heather. I live in a suburb of Chicago. I've always had an interest in history. I can't remember a time I didn't love learning about the past. As a child I would pull a volume of the encyclopedia (remember those?) off the shelf, open it, and just start reading.

I love most kinds of literature:
History, biography, historical fiction, classic fiction, modern fiction, fable, folklore, humor, mystery, suspense, memoir, philosophy and self help.

Catherine Middleton (wkatydid) Hi,
I am Cathy, from Brisbane, Australia. Since retirement, I am more able to indulge my interest in history - fiction, non-fiction, and film, with especially Scottish history being a current focus. I am also interested in ancient history, the history of wars (WW1, WW2, American Civil War), American Politics history, past and more recent, and some British history. I have joined The History Book Club as I find books that others are reading both inspirational, and very satisfying to scan more broadly the range of books which are available in my areas of interest.

Stan Applebaum | 1 comments Hello, My name is Stanley Applebaum. I will celebrate my 85th birthday later this year on October 2. My education and profession was in engineering but I have always had a strong interest in History. We recently moved from the rural area of New York state to New York city which is where I was born and grew up. Until we moved I was a member of a history book club which met in a restaurant in Lennox Massachusetts once a month. Our group covered the topic pretty well and I myself presented several books during the period of my participation. Among the topics covered by the books I presented were; Abraham Lincoln, a history of the Arab people, a biography of Joseph Stalin, and a biography of king Henry VII. I was unable to find a substitute for this book club here in New York and I am hoping that this on-line club will work out for me. I recently read an analysis and history of the American economy by Robert Gordon entitled “ The Rise and Fall of American Growth” It presents a provocative thesis that the era of growth is over in America. If Gordon is right I have profound concerns for our country.

Anit Antony | 1 comments Hi.

Myself Anit Antony. 27. Merchant Mariner. India.

History was always this boring subject for me in school. Saw no relevance in learning of the past. I was more into looking at the future, having a vision.

But, of late, i started reading a few titles, beyond my comfort zone and became keen to know more.

I was initiated by the book, A Little History Of The World by E. H. Gombrich, and ever since, I am hooked to learn more.

Our past, our evolution into the civilised world we are today. And I have become keen to know more.

So here I am.

Nicky ❤️ My Messy Bookshelf (mommyandbellaread) | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Nicky, I'm 32 years old and I am originally from New York. I have been a lover of history for many years. After high school I attended college for a short time as a history major before I made the decision to join the service. I've spent the last almost 11 years in the U.S. Navy and finally two years ago I made the decision to go back to college- this time with a double major of history and linguistics. I find it difficult to narrow my interest down to a specific area of history and I love the way different cultures and eras of history intertwine. I'm particularly interested in British/European history, ancient history, and the part that religion has played in each. I am very happy I came across this group and look forward to interacting with others who share my love!

I also read quite a lot about World War 2, but I am generally interested in many historical topics. So I'm glad to have found a group here with like-minded people :)

I am a danish anthropologist, 54 years old. I have been interested in history for at least a couple of years. By reading a bit of this and a bit of that I feel that I have gained an overall understanding of world history. This was the goal I set for my reading, so in some sense I have achieved it.
I think I particularily like "focused history". By this I mean history that dwells on something specific, like the influenza epedimic after first world war, the building of the Panama canal, Europe after second world war, or something like the history of coal, "Focused history" can also be driven by a theoretical or political argument. I did like Nial Fergussons Civilization in which he compares different regimes at different points in time, drawing out lessons for the present.
I do not like history I percieve as sloppy, with no point. I hate too repetetive writing.

I am here to be inspired. I have never tried to use a forum like this. I look forward to trying this.
Kåre

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Kåre . Welcome to the History book club!

Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out these threads and see if you can find things that interest you:

I suggest you also check put our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access the main page through this link:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

Civilization The West and the Rest by Niall Ferguson by Niall Ferguson Niall Ferguson

Ingrid (ibusse) | 1 comments My name is Ingrid and I live in Wisconsin. I enjoy reading historic biographies. Both my parents immigrated to the US from Austria. My father was born in a German speaking town in Romania, but had to flee to Austria at the end of the war when the Russians invaded. Right now I am doing a lot of research my father's hometown and genealogy. I am specifically researching and interested in information about German history, SS Wiking division, World War II, Post-World War II Europe, Eastern European history, and the Donauschwaben people.

Don Ekback | 1 comments I have recently been introduced to Good Reads and thoroughly enjoy the fact that I am not alone in my interest in history. I am fascinated by the U.S. Civil War and the people involved. I am currently reading The Other Half: The Life of Jacob Riis and the World of Immigrant America. I read Giant in the Shadows: The Life of Robert T. Lincoln last year and found it an interesting look at the end of the 19th Century in the United States.
