Brina Thank you Jill. One of these days I might actually be able to access goodreads from somewhere other than my phone. Miguel hope the above authors helps, happy reading.

Niklas Oberländer Hi my name is Niklas and I'm from Thuringia in Germany. At this moment I'm just 19 years old, but I'm really interested in history especially the last 70 years and the debate in the "Near East". But that doesn't stop my interest in other parts of history. Therefore I also want to study Political science in my future. Maybe you already noticed my problems with the English language - something I'm going to quit within the next year. As a German with unclear routes from my fathers site I'm also really interested in the transition from the NS-government to the one under Adenauer. I think this must be everything about me which could be relevant in this group. Finally I'm very hopefully and interested in following discussion. Have a good week!

Jacqueline Leigh Hi, my name is Jackie. I live both in the US and in Sierra Leone. I enjoy the process of gathering and analyzing evidence—bits of history I gain from primary sources—and discovering where they led or could have led. I am also an ESOL teacher and train teachers to run process writing clubs in junior secondary schools.

Nicolas | 1 comments Hello fellow history lovers!

Thank you for admittance to the group. Much like all of you here, I am a history lover. Scratch that; fanatic. I will devour most history material that comes my way. However, my main interests are political, social, and military European history with emphasis on the 17th and 18th centuries and Napoleonic Europe. I've also spent enormous amounts of time perusing Wikipedia articles and reading everything from AI takeovers to archival science.

I also enjoy reading about politics (international, theory, Canadian and American), economics, sociology, etc.

message 1256: by Kavita (new)

Kavita (kavirao) | 1 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Kavita and I live in the US. I have always loved reading, though my interest in history is rather recent. It all started with a podcast called "Wrath of the Khans" by Dan Carlin on a long long road trip. I was hooked. My reading has mostly veered towards historical fiction and my areas of interest are War of the Roses and British colonial history. I would like to learn more about the Middle East.

The last book I read was
Endurance Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing by Alfred Lansing
I hope I did that correctly!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Hello Kavita and welcome. You did a nice job with the book citation with one little glitch (the use of an avatar when there is no author photo.. Look at my example below) We hope you will enjoy the discussions and book recommendations here at the History Book Club.

Here are a couple of links to topics that appeal to you.

British History
Middle East

You might also want to browse our home page to find other areas of interest.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Spencer Pfeifer | 1 comments Greetings everyone! My name is Spencer Pfeifer and I’m a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University. This sort of work is often quite tedious and mundane, so reading has grown to become a counterbalance to maintain some sanity.

My more recent interests have generally been split between presidential & scientific biographies — most notably those on TR, Kennedy and Richard Feynman. However, I’ve been veering off in many different directions… inspiration is unpredictable. I've joined this group in hopes of broadening my perspectives.

Sebastien Hello, my name is Sebastien. I'm an ESL teacher from Quebec and love consuming anything related to Quebec/Canadian history and Latin-American/Colombian history, though I do not like to limit myself to any specific place or time period.

I look forward to engaging in (or "nerding out" in) fruitful discussions about history with some like-minded people in this group.

Luis Frauca remacha | 1 comments My name is luis and I live in Spain. I devour European and international history, specially the "Short XX Century" paraphrasing Eric Hobsbawm. I have also extensively read about the Spanish civil war, a conflict that still provokes heated debates in Spain and elsewhere. The two mayor conflagrations in Europe between 1914-1945 have always been of the utmost interest to me, especially in these days in which Europe has lost its sense of purpose.....glad to be here...

Michelle (vividia) | 1 comments Hi I'm Michelle. I have been a longtime History nut. I mostly delve into World War II, Ancient and Medieval, Enlightenment and the Age of Exploration. I like into topics as the history of food, language, law, medicine, literature, politics, art and music, and Intellectual History. I have even taught a seminar on Medieval music. I spent years studying Indian and South Asian, Middle Eastern as well as European History.

I grew up in a history loving household where most of us had no problems with the coursework. I live with two people who both have degrees in History and it was initially my major until I switched to Political Science. I still did enough to earn a degree in History as well.

Cheers!

message 1268: by Tom (last edited Jul 15, 2016 04:48AM) (new)

Tom | 1 comments Hi,

My name is Tom. I was born in 1988. I live in Antwerp, Belgium. Antwerp is the largest city of Belgium (although the Brussels-Capital-Region is larger). Antwerp is the second largest port of Europe, behind Rotterdam (The Netherlands).

The Capital of Belgium is Brussels, which is also the capital of the European Union. Because I live in Antwerp, that means I live in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium and therefore I am Flemish/a Fleming (Vlaams/een Vlaming) which means I speak Dutch.

In high School, I studied Latin. After that, I studied Law and now I work as a legal Counsel, after a few years of being a lawyer at the Bar. In my Master years at the university, I specialized in Public law (constitutional law (Belgian, comparative and constitutional law of the European Union), human rights, administrative law - in particular planning and zoning law, environmental law, expropriation law and public procurement law).

My main interest are:

- Belgian politics, including Belgian federalism, history of the Flemish movement, and Belgian (political) history;
- European Union politics;
- Federalism in general (Belgium, Germany, EU, USA);
- Ancient Greece and the Roman republic/empire;
- (political) philosophy (of law) and ethics;
- History of the Dutch republic;
- History and philosophy of the enlightenment;

I consider myself a liberal, in the European political sense and not in the American sense, where it is often confused with social-democracy. I'm also an atheist. I don't believe in god or gods. I am, however, interested in religion and in religious architecture and art (for those interested, visit the Cathedral of Antwerp and the Carolus Boromeus church and take a look at a few paintings of Rubens). I'm also a proponent of the European Union, of further European integration and a real European federal state.

My mother tongue is, as said before, Dutch. I can quite easily read English and I can also speak and write English, although with an occasional error, and a bit of an accent.

I can also read French and speak and write it, although less fluent and with more errors then English. French is the second official language of Belgium.

I can read German, with difficulty, and make basic conversation. I can barely write it and I don't know anything about the grammar anymore (German cases), because I only studied it for 3 years about 10 years ago and rarely use it. German is the third official language of Belgium.

I have a very basic understanding of Latin, because I forgot most about it after I finished high school. My study of Latin however left me with a very great interest in the culture and history of the Roman republic/empire.

I joined this group to discover more books about topics that interest me.

Sorry for the long post. After reading this, you deserve a Belgian beer!

Ciara | 1 comments Hi my name is Ciara, I live in Ireland. I have always loved to read but sadly the last few years I have been studying and working to much to make time to read books I want to read. I enjoy lots of types of books but History is my favourite. I never got to study American history at school and have always wanted to read about it all. If anyone can suggest any books I should with start with I would be very grateful. I am hoping to start at the very beginning.
Looking forward to all the suggestions and all the discussions this looks like a great group.

Another interest of mine is Christian theology. After graduating from a seminary in the east coast of US, I now focus my research interest in the church history in China. I'm deeply intrigued with the questions of modernity, Christians voice in civil society, religious rights, indigenization and colonization in my topic. And I'm starting a PhD study on this topic in Canada this fall.
Besides all the academic stuff, I enjoy reading history and historical fictions for fun. I especially like Japanese writers, who often get the details right and with style. It's nice to know all of you and talk about interesting books!

Rachelle (phoenixjoy) | 1 comments Hello history buffs! My name is Rachelle and I am from Seattle, Washington but currently living in Tennessee. I have very eclectic reading interests and always have one history/memoir going along with a novel. I just finished Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back, Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History and Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I am also a genealogist and I am working on a project about my ancestor that was a Chaplain in the Civil War that requires me to do a lot of reading about the American Civil War and the 2nd Great Awakening. Looking forward to hearing about great history books from the group that will expand my horizons.

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Rachelle. Welcome to the History book club!

You have a most interesting job and project. I would love, one day, to find out more about my ancestors. Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out these threads:

I suggest you also check put our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access the main page through this link:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

Daughters of the Samurai A Journey from East to West and Back by Janice P. Nimura by Janice P. Nimura Janice P. Nimura

Notorious RBG The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon by Irin Carmon Irin Carmon

Carmela Minckler | 1 comments Hello, My name is Carmela. I am a Social Studies and English teacher in Central New York, USA. Books are my teachers, friends, windows to the world, time machines to the past, etc. I have an eclectic taste in books, but history has always been a passion for me. Currently I am reading a few books by Elie Wiesel, a few Agatha Christie mysteries, and some children's books about Shakespeare and the Globe. I am exploring some legends of King Arthur and Robin Hood for possible lessons for the upcoming school year.

Ana Cristofaro (aninski) | 1 comments Hi! My name is Ana and I'm a Brazilian living in Canada. I believe my passion for history comes from my grandfather - he is Egyptian, born and raised in Cairo, and as a little girl I loved to hear him talk about life on the other side of the world. Seeing my interest and fascination, he bought me many books about Egyptian history... I guess that's where it all started for me.

I'm particularly interested in details about the culture and everyday life in different times and places, but I read pretty much anything that stirs up my curiosity. As a new resident of Québec, I've been slowly going through a couple of books on the history of the province while also reading Salt: A World History and The History of Hell. I joined this group hoping to spot interesting book suggestions and discover new interests!

Hi , my name is Sanjay Singh . I am from India.
In last few years, reading has suddenly become a passion from "just a hobby" for me. I started with fiction ( mostly fantasies ) & now would like to dig into a new genre. I am a newbie to this genre. I hope to contribute as well as get benefited by this club
