John | 41 comments Hi, my name is John. I live in Oregon. Although I read fantasy and sci-fi on occasion, my real passion is history. My mother was always a reader and helped instill a love of reading that has lasted all my life. I recall that my parents had some hardcover American Heritage books that I used to devour regularly. The ones that particularly intrigued me were the WWII book and the Great West, which was written by one of my favorites, David Lavender. My interests only branched out from there.

American Heritage History of the Great West by David Lavender by David Lavender

WWII is probably my favorite topic of them all. My father was in the Navy during the war and worked on all sorts of carrier aircraft. He told me many stories of his experiences. As a result, I favor the Pacific theater of the war, although I do love to read about all theaters. I also greatly enjoy early American history and the settling of the West, the Civil War and medieval and early English history especially the Anglo-Saxon through Tudor period. More recently I have developed an interest in WWI and hope to expand my knowledge of this conflict.

I'm looking forward to learning new things and getting to know people in this group.

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, John. Welcome to the History book club!

You have a variety of interests and I think you'll be able to find something here for each of those you mentioned. Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out these threads:

American History
American Civil War
Medieval History
British history
The First World War
The Second World War

I suggest you also check put our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access the main page through this link:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Joshua Sundquist (sunnysidemass) | 1 comments Hello everyone. My name is Josh and i'm from Massachusetts. I am twenty-two and four credits away from my bachelors degree. I love reading and I love history, like all of you, so i'm thankful to have found this book club. I like reading history because it forces my mind to go back in time and make connections about the present. I am eager to join discussions with all of you. Any good book recommendations? I just started The Republic by Plato.

Paulo Mendes (paulom) | 15 comments Hi. My name is Paulo, I'm a Brazilian military, which makes me interested in military history because I pretty sure that most of time reading and studying what happened in the past allow us to fill the gaps created by the lack of experience today. I use to read military and political leaders biographies, WWII, Vietnam War, Falklands War, Air Power and Leadership books. Nowadays I'm interested in Otoman Empire history as well, so, in case any of you have a good book on this as a recommendation I will appreciate. Besides that I enjoy Brazil's History. I live in Brazil but lived in Britain in 2013 and 2014 when I did a Master Degree in the Kings College London. I have a 2016 Challenge of reading 6 books this year and I think I'm on my way as I've already read 4. Actually this is the very first group I take part in Goodreads because I think I can get good suggestions on history book from here. I count on you. Thank you.

Evie Summers (pinpointediting) Hi everyone. I'm Evelyn, from the UK. I'm about to go into the final year of my BA in archaeology & history. My focus is on the late Roman period in the Middle East, particularly the move from paganism to Christianity in these areas.

I'm here to extend my broader knowledge of history, to have the opportunity to pick up books that I'd normally never think to read, and be able to discuss them.

Janet | 1 comments Hello and thank you for welcoming me to your group. I have been an avid reader since pre school. Now a grandmother, I am interested in a variety of genres, history being one. I am looking forward to the suggestions and insights of the group members. My current read is Butcher's Crossing, so I am literaturely in northern Kansas and into the mountains of Colorado. Also watching the Miniseries from Centennial. This is not non fiction history but I am certainly getting a sense of time and place. Hope this doesn't disqualify granny.

Mahak Puri | 1 comments Hi.. My name is Mahak Puri from Bangalore, India. I have a strong inclination for this genre as I feel it has the capability to answer a lot of questions about the present. You can never be oblivious to the past and yet think of a bright future. With all the unrest all over the world, it's important to go back in time and realize where and how things came into existence. Everyone seems to have a lot of complaints from their present and that is giving rise to the imbalance we see in this world today. One can fully embrace present only when you thoroughly understand your past.

Through this group, I hope to find some of the best books of this genre suggested by the group of intellects like you guys. And further, wish to spread that knowledge to my surroundings in the hope that it may increase humility and compassion in the society.

Bugsy Bairan | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Bugsy from the Philippines. I am 23 years old and I have a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) with concentrations in Economics and Development Studies. As an IS major, I have a wide array of interests, which I nurture through reading books. These interests fall mostly under the categories of History, Economics, Politics, Government, and Development - as you may observe in the books that I've read and want to read (Excluding most of the fictional books as they're required readings back when I was still a student). I have always been fascinated in learning about how the world "works," as well as how past events/people have influenced the current state of the world.

However, unlike most of you (I'm assuming), I only started appreciating the value of books in the latter part of my college life. I hope this doesn't hinder me from catching up with the knowledge and wisdom all of you have in the discussions of the group.

I am a 70-year-old retired English teacher who was presented 15 months ago with her first, and almost certainly only grandson. I've turned into one of those grandmothers, sending photos to everyone I know. I spend my time writing and editing and grand-mothering, busier in retirement than when I was teaching full-time. I miss my students but love being able to set my own schedule. I live with one 12-year-old cat, Isaac, and have a remarkable group of friends. I read and read and read. Most recently I've reread Barbara Tuckman's A Distant Mirror which is good as it was 30 years ago when I was prepping to teach Canterbury Tales for the first time. I'm looking forward to this.

Hi, Noelle, what a great new rule. That's pretty much how I read, being a retired English teacher and a compulsive learner and reader. What's true for me is that when I'm reading for learning my pleasure is about doubled. And isn't it fun to be doing it with a group so you can share what you're reading?

Karolina (szarolina) Hello! I'm Karolina, 20 year old girl from Poland. I'm currently taking a gap year, because I have to pass an advanced history exam which is obligatory for me if I want to study East European Studies at university. That's why I'll be preparing for it this year. I like almost everything about history, however my object of interest revolves around modern and contemporary period, especially XX century and East European countries. Recently, I've became interested even more in communist Poland aka PRL, because this part of our history is quite neglected in Polish schools, mostly because of lack of time in the end of the year as chronology usually matters. What's more I find it quite interesting, how it worked, how it's still loud and controversial today, unclear and how people still recall their memories of personal experiences (like my grandparents and parents).

(Or I'm just interested in regimes just by the way...)

Feel free to message me if you want to talk about history or non-history related things. Book recs are ok, though I barely manage to read at least a small part of the current amount of them on my "to-read" shelf...

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Karolina. Welcome to the History book club!

Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out these threads:

Europe - European History
British history

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

Stalin The Court of the Red Tsar by Simon Sebag Montefiore by Simon Sebag Montefiore Simon Sebag Montefiore

Luke Gracias | 1 comments Hi
My name is Luke Gracias. I am an environmental specialist and an avid photographer. I live in Australia.
I have been interested in history since I was a child. In the recent past I have combined my love for history with my passion for photography and been travelling around the world photographing monuments, churches and sites with interesting and strange historical backgrounds.

I love reading stories which cover unexplained events in history and conspiracy theories.

I loved The Quest Energy, Security, and the Remaking of the Modern World by Daniel Yergin , and would strongly recommend this Pulitzer Prize winning author to anyone interested in the role oil has played in wars. I also liked the The Last Mughal The Fall of a Dynasty Delhi, 1857 by William Dalrymple

Best

Luke Gracias

Henry Brock | 6 comments I,

I am Henry Brock, university graduate with a History degree (years ago).

I still read a great deal about history and try to stay up to date. I have a certain fascination with Napoleon. I love Shelby Foote's 'Civil War'. I love Edward Gibbon's "Decline and Fall..", though have only read the abridged version.

That's all for now. Happy to be here.

Henry

Genia Lukin Hello, History Book Club, I'm Genia, and I'm an addict.

Actually, I am a master's student in psycholinguistics, but I encounter history all over the place, including in language courses. I also have a minor Barbara Tuchman addiction, to add to my other historical problems.

I don't so much 'like' history as 'get beaten over the head with it' in the best abusive mrelationship style. Which means I read eclectically, though I have a vested interest in political history and military history, and Jewish History basicallly just walked into my house and refuses to get out.

Julie Mozelewski (juliemozelewski) | 0 comments Hey everyone! My name is Julie and I'm an English Literature and History double major going into my junior year of college in Pittsburgh, PA. My favorite area of history is The War of the Roses/Tudor era. I also am interested in anything to do with royalty, especially European monarchies like England. Though royalty is my all-around favorite historical subject, I am very interested in WWII and medieval and ancient history. That being said, I haven't read many whole books on these subjects. I do have about two history classes a semester, but so far they have been more broad. However, this semester I am taking a course on modern British history. I would love to hear recommendations from anyone just please no Phillipa Gregory haha! I'm looking forward to learning a lot. Thanks for reading!
