Titan3lla Hello everybody!

I'm Ella from Hungary. I study English Literature in Edinburgh, Scotland and I really like history.
In my dissertation I would like to write about women authors who wrote about their World War II experiences at the time, or books that are about the homefront, women's lives etc.
So any help will be appreciated!

I thought I could find some help in this bookclub looking for these books!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Hello and welcome, Ella. You have found the right place for the history lover. Visit the link below which may be helpful to you when writing your dissertation.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Andy Brown Glad to have found this nonfiction/history group.

I rarely read anything but nonfiction and am specifically drawn to combat, crime and disaster, narrative nonfiction books.
I was in the Air Force Security Police/Security Forces for ten years and served in Idaho, Greece, Washington, Hawaii, New Mexico, Korea, Saudi Arabia and Germany.
I read about history in an effort to learn from the experiences of others.

Looking forward to reading about your experiences in reading.

Anna | 5 comments Hi --

My name is Anna and I live in Indiana in the US. I love all aspects of history, particularly American history, but in recent years, I've become more interested in European history -- the world wars and beyond...recently came back from a trip to England so I'm really interested in learning more about British history, and the monarchy...all suggestions are welcome. I love Goodreads b/c there are so many great places to get suggestions and read reviews of other serious readers.
thanks!

Chris Aldrich (chrisaldrich) | 1 comments Hello fellow history lovers! I've lurked in the fora here on and off for a bit dipping in and out of the voluminously impressive amount of material.

I'm an engineer and mathematician by training, but have always enjoyed not only reading fiction, but have always had a penchant for all eras of history and particularly biography.

While I love the concept of "Big History" as espoused by historians David Christian and Fred Spier (no photos), there's also nothing better than delving into a smaller time period or life for more in depth analysis.

I've read several of his other books, but I'm glad to be joining in the coming months' discussion of
Washington A Life by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow Ron Chernow.

Hope to see everyone there.

Frank T | 8 comments Hi, my name is Frank and after looking at your group for a couple of years to get some suggestions for books I should read, I have finally decided to actually join. I have always been interested in history and coming from Australia I like to read Australian history, including Australian involvement in wars/battles overseas. I have always enjoyed ancient history and when travelling overseas I always try to read a book on the history of the country I am visiting. I have been recently reading about the Incas and my next book will be in relation to Cuban missile crisis. I hope to be able to get many more ideas from your group and maybe participate in discussing some of the book you read.

Bianca (bianca_v) Hi everyone! My name's Bianca, and I hail from the Philippines. :) History has always been my "great love" among subjects, and it's always been a frustration of mine that I didn't take that course instead during college (sad) :( but no worries, since I'm thankful there are loads of history books that I can just pick up and read.

I'm generally interested in Asian History (particularly Southeast Asian, of course) and Latin American history.

Really excited to read more of this book club's recommended reads, and to discuss them with all of you :)

I'm in my late 20's and have been interested in history since I was a child; I used to check out a book on biographies from the library in elementary school. I'm most interested in the Antebellum Period and the Civil War in the US. I think it's interesting to learn about the different personalities during a time period in which the United States was so polarized.

Claire Hilaire (pacificcstar) | 1 comments Hi!

My name is Claire. I have been on Goodreads for a while, but this is my first group.

I think history really resonates with me because I love stories and learning more about what it means to be human. I also feel a connection with the experiences and values of those who have come before me. I am terrible about remembering dates and places, and have a really difficult time creating a larger picture of when events transpired. But I easily remember stories, characters, and lessons learned from the amazing people in history that I learn about.

I am so looking forward to learning more about history through reading and discussion as a part of this group.

Ashish Deora (ashish_deora) Hi All,

Greetings from India!

I am Ashish from Mumbai. I am an Information Technology graduate and works in a professional services firm in the operations department.

I'm in deep love with books which deal greatly with pre and post-WWII time.

At present, I am reading "The Rise and Fall of Third Reich" by William Shirer.

Apart from this, I like some old American and European history as well. At present, I am ready "To kill a Mockingbird".

Lastly, I enjoy Sherlock Holmes and don't finishing the books because I don't want them to be over ever.

Amateur in the world of books with non-polished English Grammar, I re-discovered my imagination and day dreaming by reading novels which were destroyed by school education.

Looking forward to interacting soon!

Thanks and regards
Ashish

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Hello Brittany and welcome to the History Book Club. We look forward to your participation. Why not browse our home page at the link below and find those topics that are of interest to you.

History Book Club Home Page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich A History of Nazi Germany by William L. Shirer by William L. Shirer William L. Shirer

David Dennington | 2 comments Hello,
My name is David and I’m fascinated by history and how simple, human emotions and foibles, as well as downright evil traits, can shape significant world events. I especially love historical pieces which expose real life experiences between ancient times and the recent days of World War II. I find it interesting that, in essence, people of those times were exactly the same as we are today.
I was born in England and grew up post-war London. One of my earliest recollections was standing in our little garden watching the skies for Hitler’s bombers and running to my mother proclaiming, “Doodlebug coming, Mum, doodlebug coming!” (which of course, there wasn’t, thank God). Yes, even at age four, I had been warned by my wonderful and beautiful mother to keep an eye and an ear out for doodlebugs (V2 rockets). After the war, my playgrounds were bombed-out ruins of houses and gardens around Brixton, which we thought of as fun places, at the time.
My hobbies and interests over the years have included flying, sailing, cooking, reading, writing, horses, movies, politics, historical research and the paranormal. All of these things seem to end up in my writing!
My consuming interest for the past 25 years has been the research of the British Empire, World War One and Two, as well as the development of the great airships of the 1920’s. I was captivated by that subject, not so much from the technical or engineering standpoint, but by the intertwined stories of the men and women and their families of all classes, (as well as the politicians) who lived through those experiences. Tough times, indeed!
My favorite authors include: Ian McEwan, Iris Murdoch, Erik Larson, Somerset Maugham, Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, John Fowles, Nevil Shute, Khaled Hosseini and Paula McLain.
I have worked and traveled in Great Britain, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Caribbean, the USA, Spain, France, and briefly, the Middle East.

I look forward to getting to know you and interacting with the group.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) An absolutely fascinating introduction, David. You lived through an interesting time as London was rebuilding after WWII. A tip of the hat to your family who suffered through the Blitz.

Christopher Hi, my name is Chris and I'm from Ontario, Canada.
One of my first history-esque books I loved as a child was a book of Greek mythology. I now have two girls of my own who (thanks to Percy Jackson) like to actually listen to my stories about the myths and days of yore. I read a lot of science books in college, but I realized I liked the story of breakthrough discoveries, the personalities behind the science more than perhaps the science itself.
I love telling stories, but the best stories are always true, and that's what I like to read. I read history from any period, whatever I'm curious about at the time. I'm also member of my local municipal heritage committee, dedicated to preserving properties of historical interest in my area.
