message 1601: by David (new)

David Davitti | 1 comments Hello there, my name is David, living in Florence italy.
I wish to join the history book club simply because I've always been attracted by this matter and I'd like to share this passion with others. I grew up reading again and again the timeless Roman and Greek classics enjoying the wisdom of Cicero or the deeds of Cesar and his legions, the conquests of Alexander. Is there any fiction romance that can be more thrilling than History? Of course to enjoy this matter we need good books and intelligent historians! I do agree with Giambattista Vico's idea, considering history not a collection of data, or a means to show off personal culture, but as the very theater where human spirit can fully express itself, in positive or negative, at individual or social level. Then, as regard any historical event, more than in knowing the fact itself I'm interested to understand "why" and "who" made it. After all the difference between good and not so good historians is precisely in such an ability to find a greater pattern, a pattern that should be useful to better understand our present and our future.

Sarai (arcadianreader) | 1 comments Hello everyone, my name is Sarai, from the U.S.

Like everyone else, I fell in love with reading about history as a child.

My favorite periods off the top of my head are ancient history (Egypt, Rome, Greece), medieval (England, Spain, Italy), renaissance, gilded age. Some interesting figures: Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, Ramses, Cleopatra VII, Cleopatra Selene II, Augustus, Isabella I of Castile and her children, I could go on forever...

What a nice introduction, David. We welcome you to The History Book Club. We have a variety of folders which may interest you. There are many topics for you to peruse and we have discussions on lots of different books. Hope you can join in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in this topic:

Ancient history

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

Adam Paschal (apacko) | 1 comments Hello my name is Adam and I live in California, USA. and I am 27. I am both a grad student (history) and a high school history teacher. I've always found history fascinating; being able to look at different cultures and learning why people and societies are the way they are. I am glad to be in this group, as I hope I can find some non traditional history books for my students to read(US, world history, American government), as well as history books for my interests as well (largely East Asian History; China, Japan, Korea).
Currently I am reading Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen by James W. Loewen James W. Loewen and A Different Mirror A History of Multicultural America by Ronald Takaki by Ronald Takaki Ronald Takaki (for my 11th grade US history students). I look forward to seeing what this group has to offer, and of course contributing whenever I can.

I enjoy reading classics, fantasy, historical fiction, and history. I enjoy reading about the Tudors and other royal families and about turbulent times in history such as the French and Russian revolutions. I studied anthropology for my first two years of college, so I am also interested in reading books related to the subjects of anthropology and archaeology.

Now i am 37 and, recently, i started enjoying non-fictional history books. I like to read biographies and books describing the lives of ordinary people over a period of history. I have always loved history because it is always intertwined with other principles and areas (just like literature, which I have done as an undergraduate degree). In terms of history, I am currently reading Roberts and Westad's The New Penguin History of The World, Robert's The Penguin History of Europe and Axworthy's A History of Iran: Empire of the Mind because I am now pursuing a degree in European Studies and would like to see how different narratives complement/contradict. message 1622: by Colleen (new)

Colleen | 0 comments Hey all! I'm Colleen, and I'm in California. I actually got hooked on reading as a kid with the Fantasy/Sci-fi genres. I got into history in general because of a professor I had at a local community college. (I love talking about her class, so here you go:) It was just American History from Columbus landing thru the 1900's, which NEVER interested me. Like, ever. But she kept the class alive and did what she could to make events relevant and relatable to us, and she offered a ton of extra credit in the forms of mock trials and debates, whether or not we agreed with the "side" we were on. It was fascinating, and it was what first sparked an interest in history for me. That interest was bolstered by an online Philosophy class I took a few years after, and how it related to politics and government and people groups as a whole. Just awesome stuff.

I will admit, though, I have never actually read a historical book outside of a textbook or a required reading for a class (and I didn't necessarily read those, either), but the interest is definitely there, which is why I've joined the group. :)

As far as what kinds of history themes I'm interested in, there's definitely a bit of curiosity surrounding American Politics (can't imagine why...), as well as an interest in European history and scientific stuff, too, like about the Space Race or what led to the first models of modern-day devices and technologies. I don't know, I guess I'm still getting my feet wet in this whole area, so I'm sure I'll find out that there's so much that I don't even know is out there. Looking forward to it, though!

I will read anything that piques my interest and while I've been mainly focused on fiction I chose this group to help expand my horizons into non fiction. I do love history as a topic but I haven't narrowed down which specific time period would be my favorite. I'm hoping to be introduced to some interesting biographies as well.

This is also my first foray into a Goodreads book club so I will try and hold up my end with discussions and suggestions.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

message 1641: by Kim. E. (new)

Kim. E. | 5 comments Hi everybody. My name is Kim and I hope I'm doing this right. I signed up for Goodreads a couple months ago and so far have figured out how to mark what I've read and want to read, but everything else is a great mystery with much difficulty for me. (I won't tell you how long it took me to figure out how to leave this post). I had a stroke in my late 30's, while enjoying a career as a clinical social worker here in the US who traveled a lot for my job, my child, and for genealogy, and loved it. As a result I had to retire and spent 3 years with a laptop next to me learning how to read again, but I have trouble with other things, so anyone who could give me kindergarten level lessons on how to add shelves and to make a profile and a profile section to my profile would be my hero.

My dad passed away in May and was so proud to serve in the Navy during WWII, so military history of that war and the Civil War and the Revolution are part of the reason I'm interested in this group (also helps with genealogy).

Other history areas I hope this group will help me with are Irish, Russian/Romanov, German/Prussian, and who knows from there. You can tell I like history, plain. I'm excited to see where this goes, and apologize for such a long passage.

Scott Hello, everyone. I am Scott and come from South Korea. Actually, I am not good at English, so please excuse my poor English.

I started to read English books last year just to improve my English. But as I read more books, I became to be a book-lover. And recently I realized that I am interested in history. So that's why I am in here, this history book club.

I would like to read books about history together and share what we think or feel with each other. :)

James Foster (jamesafoster) I'm James Foster. I have a semi-regular reading rotation that includes a regular history book every few weeks (at least), hence my interest in this group! I am particularly fond of ancient history, intellectual history, and American history. But, honestly, I just look for good writing about influential people, places, or ideas. I haven't a clue how many history books I've read, but the ones that remain in our home library fill more than a wall! And then there's kindle...
