Marcy Baez Lopez | 1 comments Hi I am Marcy. I am a genealogist and family historian. I enjoy learning about my ancestors and history has a way of telling their story. Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Marcy......We are so glad you joined us. Genealogy is a fascinating trip into the past to discover your roots. As a history buff, you have come to the place for all things history. I suggest that you visit our home page at the link below to get started.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

James | 2 comments Hi guys,

I am from (rainy) Manchester, UK.

I studied History (Ba) at Sheffield University specialising in the Vietnam War. I also studied modules on Nazi Germany, the Roman Empire, Salem Witch Trials, Genocide and African colonisation. I have a Masters (MA) in American History (again from Sheffield) where I mainly studied the American Civil War, The American War of Independence, the American Civil Rights Movement and the 19th Century American West. I also touched on a bit South American history too!

I love reading mainly anything that is to do with military history, the American West & 18th/19th Century America, the Second World War, the First World War and the Vietnam War.

My favourite authors are Max Hastings and James McPherson.

I am also looking to expand my knowledge across other historical areas so I am open to any good suggestions.

Cheers

James

Blake Running | 2 comments Hello everybody,
First off, I look forward to the future discussions. I have progressed through my Masters in History with American Public University [a.k.a. American Military University] and need to start my thesis. Actually I have questions there but that's for another post.
My interest is predominately in American History [i.e. the revolutionary period and Am. Civil War]. I chose my masters program in Global Civilizations to help get a big picture. I now know how ignorant I am on so many topics that I have a hard time concentrating on a period.
So, to the moderator, lets start out with; American Revolution or the American War of Independence, WW I [from the centennial celebrations], WW II, French Revolution [which I am ignorant but want to learn] and ..... well O.K. I'll stop there.
Oh yes, I have been a Flight AEMT for the past nine years. Flying out of Helena, Mt. to a wide area of the States; and am now just recently going to be semi-retired. Nine years was enough. Have volunteered for a local Ski Patrol, am into motorcycles. Actually, I put a sidecar one one of my motorcycles [a 1983 Honda Goldwing] in honor of those that transported the wounded or used as communications. I wanted to feel a little of what they felt. My markings on this sidecar are the exact ones from the 94th Flight Squadron which was the first American squad to fight under the American flag in 1918. I'm also into shooting [hand guns] and long guns, Archery, building street rods and sometimes fishing.
I look forward to everybody's input.
Bye, Blake

Hi James,
Welcome to the group. I too enjoy Max Hastings and James McPherson. I bet you are familiar wit Peter Ackroyd. I read his Foundations and liked it so much I bought his Rebellion and Civil War. So, do you guys in the UK think he gives a good account of your history?

Karen Bobrow | 1 comments Hi. My name is Karen. I am from NJ but have retired to SC. I always hated history. I studied math/computer science in college. It was not until I became interested in family history that my attitude changed. I realized that by reading books, both historical fiction and nonfiction books, I am learning how fascinating history is when I am not reading a texbook.

My father and several uncles served in World War II, so that is an area of interest. My dad lived in the Soviet Union for ten years, so I am also drawn to that subject, and I recently found an Irish grandparent who served in the Civil War, so I need to add Civil War stories to my bookshelf. I look forward to being a member of this group.

LavenderPoodle Hi everyone
My name is Sarah, I live in Zurich/Switzerland and I love reading on a lot of different topics.
I graduated in English literature and linguistics / Old Norse philology, and thus history has always been a feature on my reading lists, loads of medieval and pre-medieval stuff anyway, both theoretical and fictional texts. I love learning more and more about why the world today is the way it is, and how we influence what's happening around us by the cultural and political choices we've made and continue making. Religious history of different faiths and /or related to the Franciscan movement in particular, are among my favourite subjects.

I am currently re-reading the Tales of the city-series (talking about recent cultural history!) reading philosophical texts and crime novels as well as some historical books about Italy plus one on Che Guevara and Latin America:

Andare per l'Italia araba by Alessandro Vanoli by Alessandro Vanoli Alessandro Vanoli
Tales of the City (Tales of the City, #1) by Armistead Maupin by Armistead Maupin Armistead Maupin
The Pursuit of Italy by David Gilmour by David Gilmour David Gilmour

Seuweich | 1 comments Hi My name is Zhennan Wei from China. Reading has been my passion since I was a child and history is always my favorite. I started from scores of books introducing World War Two collected by my father when I was about eight-year-old. At that time I was just too young to fully understand these books, but I did become an expert of the Second World War among my peers, That was when I felt a passion of knowing what happened in the past.
I began with a war broke out in Europe sixty years ago, and the pursuit for understanding the differences, as well as the similarities between western countries and China lasted through my teenage years. The pursuit continued when I entered the university and I finally realized that, since many records have been lost, times have changed, even the opinions about one single event could change as time pass by, and I can only find a satisfying answer by knowing as much as possible about what had exactly happened in the past.
Now I am focusing on Medieval and early modern Europe, though I must spend most of the time learning how to design RFIC. Wonderful to find so many of you together.

As I get older and as I travel, I find that I am drawn to history even more.

Living in New England there is quite a bit of American History all around. In the spirit of the election, I was able to convince my neighborhood book club to read Nathaniel Philbrick's "Bunker Hill " for our November meeting. #proud !
Nathaniel Philbrick Nathaniel Philbrick Bunker Hill: A City, a Siege, a Revolution

I quite like historical fiction as well. I recently read Geraldine Brooks Geraldine Brooks Caleb's Crossing and discovered quite a lot that I didn't know about the Wampanoags.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Coti Chemi (justcotic) Hello everyone!
Well, my name is Constanza, aka Coti, I'm from Argentina and reading is my passion.
I'm 16, I'm planning to study antropology at the university, and although I'm not very keen at english, I love improving my skills through reading.
I do 6 hs of dance per week, next year i'll sit for the ib diploma, and in my reading challenge of 50 books i'd like to enjoy including as much history books as posible. However, i'm very open to any recomendation for any kind of book.
Although i grew up reading my dad's book of popular russian tales, my love for history started with Ken Follett Ken Follett's Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy, #1) by Ken Follett Fall of giants . By the end of that same year i'd have already finished Why the allies won Why the Allies Won by Richard Overy by Richard Overy Richard Overy , if i may do my (exponencial) interest brief.
I guess that's all, I'll certainly look forward to read the next book with you all, cheers!

Mark Chapman (markchapman) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Mark Chapman and enjoy reading non-fiction books. I'm currently reading on the topics of American History, Military History and New Orleans history.

My recent readings was George Washington Gentleman Warrior by Stephen Brumwell, Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose and The Man Who Saved the Union - Ulysses Grant in War and Peace by H. W. Brands.
