danny ramos (dannyramos) | 1 comments Hello everybody - I'm Danny, a life-long history nerd and more recent Civil War buff. I've always been fascinated by history, especially American history. My step mom has taught American History for years, so that's the environment I grew up in. I minored in History at the University of Florida, with a special focus on American foreign policy. Over the last few years, I've developed a huge interest in the Civil War, so that consumes most of what I read now (as my GoodReads profile can attest...). I have an interest in Space History as well, though social/military history is a more immediate passion.

I'm excited to join a group of other history buffs for some great book recommendations and lively conversations!

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) A warm welcome, Danny..........I guess we all are history nerds here at the HBC!! Sounds like you grew up in a history loving family which gave you an early interest in the past and what we can learn from it. You mentioned two particular topics and you may find them at the link below.

American Civil War
Space Travel

Take a look at our home page to find other subjects which might catch your eye.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

message 1804: by Joel (new)

Joel (joeldick) | 68 comments Hi,

I'm Joel Dick and I love reading books about history, especially history of science, mathematics, economics, politics, business, and linguistics, or human intellectual development and technological progress in general.

I am 33 years old live in Toronto, Canada and hold a Bachelors of Applied Science (AKA Engineering) and am currently studying for my Masters of Engineering at The University of Toronto. I have also worked as an investment banker and computer programmer and am currently involved in the internet start-up sector. I enjoy discussing politics - I hold conservative-libertarian - and I am also enthusiastic about nature & outdoors, and these topics are reflected in my preferred reading.

I read almost exclusively non-fiction, and occasionally classical fiction or fiction with some historic, political, or scientific interest, like
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald by F. Scott Fitzgerald F. Scott Fitzgerald
and
The Martian by Andy Weir by Andy Weir Andy Weir.

I like deeply researched and detailed books, like
The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes by Richard Rhodes Richard Rhodes,
The Power Broker Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro, and
The Emperor of All Maladies A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee by Siddhartha Mukherjee Siddhartha Mukherjee,
but above all I enjoy a highly readable style, like
A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson.
In fact, that last one is my favorite author, and I loved his
At Home A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson,
A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson,
and
The Mother Tongue English and How It Got That Way by Bill Bryson by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson,
as well as pretty much anything else by him.

I like reading about the personal stories of great scientists, inventors, businessmen, or otherwise heroic figures, especially books that give me a feel for the times in which they lived, or a deeper insight into how human discovery progresses, like
The Alchemy of Air A Jewish Genius, a Doomed Tycoon, and the Scientific Discovery That Fed the World but Fueled the Rise of Hitler by Thomas Hager by Thomas Hager Thomas Hager,
Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! Adventures of a Curious Character by Richard Feynman by Richard Feynman Richard Feynman,
The Innovators How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution by Walter Isaacson by Walter Isaacson Walter Isaacson,
Longitude The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel by Dava Sobel Dava Sobel,
and
Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand by Laura Hillenbrand Laura Hillenbrand.

I also like to read about economics, linguistics, politics, and mathematics. Some of my favorites are
The Power of Babel A Natural History of Language by John McWhorter by John McWhorter John McWhorter,
Free to Choose A Personal Statement by Milton Friedman by Milton Friedman Milton Friedman,
The Righteous Mind Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt by Jonathan Haidt Jonathan Haidt,
Journey through Genius The Great Theorems of Mathematics by William Dunham by William Dunham William Dunham,
The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe by Tom Wolfe Tom Wolfe,
and
The Man Who Loved Only Numbers The Story of Paul Erdős and the Search for Mathematical Truth by Paul Hoffman by Paul Hoffman Paul Hoffman.

I hope you check out my shelves and tell me some of your favorites, and discuss with me some of our mutual favorites.

Regards,
Joel

message 1819: by Fahad Shuja (new)

Fahad Shuja | 2 comments Hello.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:
My name is Fahad, and this is the first time using goodreads, and therefore first time on a Community.

WHY JOIN THIS GROUP?
The older I get, the more I recognize that we as people are no different in our way of thinking and/or reacting to life than those who came before us. We may have become eloquent in our way of talking and the technology we use to express ourselves, but take away electricity and we will act no different than someone who lived 300 or even 3,000+ years ago. With that thought, I am looking for history books with following qualities:
1) Non fiction
2) Written in as unbiased way as possible (no glorification to one side)
3) Talking about important events that happened

SOME INITIAL TOPICS:
I would like to read on what it was like to live in Germany in late 1800s and leading up to WWII and perhaps a little after the Allies won.

There are lots of books out there on history, so I would greatly appreciate in being directed in the right direction in finding the ones that meet the three items mentioned earlier. Thanks in advance! =)

While doing some mindless task I put the Dark Ages doc on in the background. I kept having to interrupt my task because I was so caught up with it. I want to read a lot more. Does anyone have any recommendations on some good Dark ages history focusing on the end of the Roman empire and the rise of Charlemagne? I seem to be coming across either bios of Charlemagne or mostly Middle Ages books. Thank you!

Katie (neverlistless) Hi Everyone,
My name is Katie and I'm joining in from New Hampshire in the US. I am a social worker with two little boys (3 and 1.5). I joined this group because one of my reading goals next year is to read more nonfiction. I'm not a huge nonfiction reader, so I knew that I needed a little support with this one! The topics seem varied and thoughtful - so I thought I would try to join in!

I often wish that I would have majored in History and Literature in college, so I've been seeking out communities to help me grow my knowledge base - the world feels so off-kilter to me right now and I believe that knowledge is power!

As for specific interests, I love reading novels set during WWII, and I would like to learn more about that time period. I also enjoy learning about early American History and how it relates to some of the obstacles we face today. Which is why I'm very excited to join in on this month's group read!

Vincent Hi everyone, this is Vincent from central Illinois. I have only recently discovered goodreads, and have spent a fair amount of time enjoying the cite. After years of reading fiction, which I still enjoy, I have been reading much more nonfiction, especially history and biographies, for about a decade now. I especially enjoy U.S. history. The colonial period has been a favorite era, but now I want to read more about the late 1800s-early 1900s period. I am also working my way through presidential biographies. I look forward to visiting goodreads, and the History Book Club pages as frequently as possible.

Bianca (bankziiedoo) | 1 comments Hi everyone, my name is Bianca, I'm from Australia and I am currently studying History at University.

I fell in love with all things history during high school and decided to follow my passion and become a history teacher.

I love many aspects of the History umbrella but I would say Ancient History is my favourite.

Studying history as a university subject has opened my eyes to even more wonderful historical texts and events, which has only caused my library to expand past my book shelf!

I look forward to being a part of this club and expanding my ever growing reading list!

Thanks for reading!

Paul (paa00a) | 98 comments Hey all,

Paul from Texas here. I'm something of an omnivore in what I read, but history is probably my favorite genre overall. You can't figure out why you're here or where you're going without understanding where you've been.

I've read a lot in American history, especially colonial and revolutionary eras. More recently, I've been focusing on history at the margins – particularly the history of African Americans and women in our society.

I also research and write about religious history – specifically the interaction between certain fundamentalist Christian groups and social or scientific movements (civil rights, evolution, feminism, etc.). One of these years, I hope to write a book along those lines, but alas, none so far.

A few of my favorite history-related books are:

Team of Rivals The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin by Doris Kearns Goodwin Doris Kearns Goodwin
What Hath God Wrought The Transformation of America, 1815-1848 by Daniel Walker Howe by Daniel Walker Howe (no image)
The Half Has Never Been Told Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism by Edward E. Baptist by Edward E. Baptist (no image)

Looking forward to diving in. :-)

Ambar (ambarydv) | 1 comments Hi.

I'm a law student from Bombay, India. Always had a bit of an interest in history. I'll read just about anything, but tend to gravitate towards Indian history (from any period, there's quite a lot of ground to cover though), European history, interactions between imperial and oriental civilisations and military history. I would love recommended reading from any of the above or any other period/territory. Recommendations regarding African history, early American (before European discovery) history and early Japanese history are also very welcome, since i know next to nothing about them and would love to fill in those lacunae.

Thanks a lot for having me and please forgive the typos, if any, I'm currently using a mobile device :)

Andrew Hi everyone,

I'm Andrew, I live in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.

I became really interested in history (primarily American Revolution, but recently WW 1 & 2) a few years ago, and have loved digging into biographies specifically.

I am excited to be a part of this group, and hope to learn a lot as well as get some great book recommendations!
