Patrick | 1 comments Hi, I'm Patrick. I love to read books on many different topics but history is a recurring favorite. I don't have a favorite time or place but I do have favorite authors; Barbara Tuchman, Simon Winchester, Bernard Cornwell. And if I can go way back to the beginning I would include Jared Diamond as I think I have read all of his books and would count Guns, Germs and Steel as one of the best books I have ever read.

Welcome to our group, Dan! We have many different topics and books being discussed here so please feel free to explore and jump in.

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Joe Simonds My name is Joe. I'm interested in the past, partly because it sheds so much light on today, but also because it's amazing to me just how much of it there is. We're born in the middle (hopefully not at the end) of an amazingly complex story. I've decided to start this year with some books that cover many years, such as:

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

On Politics, by Alan Ryan (Can't find the link in the "add book/author" feature)

A History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch

Leah My name is Leah Young. I'm 22 and from Northern Ireland, and have always had a passion for history, and reading. My undergrad degree was in Modern History, focusing on 20th century World History, and my MA focuses on Middle Eastern history. Areas that I particularly enjoy reading about include the Cold War from the U.S., Soviet, and Asian perspectives, and the Middle East in the latter part of the 20th century. I've also read a lot about 20th century European history, particularly looking at Germany, Italy, the Soviet Union, and Ireland, and have looked at Asian history, focusing on China, Vietnam, and Japan. A few of my favourite books are:

'Hiroshima'- John Hersey
'The Strange Career of Jim Crow'- C. Vann Woodward
'The Struggle for Black Equality'- Harvard Sitkoff
'My Life with Bonnie and Clyde'- Blanche Caldwell Barrow

As a student, I do a lot of reading, and am keen to read about new areas of history that I haven't yet had the opportunity to explore. I'm excited to be among others with an interest in history and to get the opportunity to share recommendations.

message 1979: by Eric (new)

Eric (longstrangetripster) | 1 comments Hello...My name is Eric, and I am from Oregon, in the Great Northwest of the USA. I've been a history freak since I was a kid. It's Mom's fault, and I thank her every year with a few new, or new-old, books on history or bio. At the present moment I am reading two histories; 1) The First American: The Life And Times Of Benjamin Franklin by H.W. Brand & 2) Passionate Nation: An Epic History Of Texas by James L. Haley. I have Hamilton by Ron Chernow on the back burner. On kind of an American kick right now, especially with the combustibility of our politics right now.

I started off my life as a political junkie back in the Vietnam/Watergate/Munich Massacre era of the early 70's. I was a wee lad of seven when I told my Dad, in tears, that I didn't want to be sent to Vietnam. As usual, he was right, and I was not fodder. But, watching the news in that time, along with a few good history & social studies teachers year in & year out over the ensuing years, gave me a passion for history. The correlations of the past & present fascinate me to no end. It seems that humans have an inherent inability to learn from the mistakes of history...even fairly recent history, doesn't it?

My main interest is books that deal with political personages in history. On my own, I think I tend to get bogged down into one or two.....subjects, eras, or places. (For instance like now, two books on Revolutionary War Americans, and one on the state of Tejas) I guess my goal in joining this group is to see if I can expand my horizons a bit more. Quite a bit more. So, I hope y'all will find me a good and edifying addition to the group, and thank you for being here.

Peace in 2017 from Oregon!!!

Jenni | 1 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Jenni and I am finishing up my BA in History. My interests lie in the indigenous peoples throughout the world, but specifically in North and South America. I plan on attending grad school and hope to earn a PhD in history so I can teach students to love history at the collegiate level.

I love to read. From a very young age I have read anything with words! I have recently been reading non fiction books about the American southwest and the borderlands.

I don't have much of an interest in European history, but am enthralled with all other history. I look forward to sharing what I am reading and being able to look through other recommendations.

I have had a Goodreads account for quite some time but this is the first time I have actively used it. I am hoping someone will take the time to show me the ropes!

Thank you!

I don't mind what I read although I rarely read fiction, concentrating on sport, politics and history, particularly the civil wars of both England and America.

I tend to gravitate towards economics, psychology, and sociology books because of my academic background but I am looking to develop a better understanding of American history. At the moment, I am interested in historical biographies and American political history!

Samanta (almacubana) Hello, Jenni. Welcome to the History book club!

Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out these threads:

I suggest you also check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access the main page through this link:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

Pauli Murray The Autobiography of a Black Activist, Feminist, Lawyer, Priest, and Poet by Pauli Murray by Pauli Murray Pauli Murray
Married To A Daughter Of The Land Spanish-Mexican Women And Interethnic Marriage In California, 1820-80 by Maria Raque'l Casas by Maria Raque'l Casas (no photo)

Sara Pascoe (sarapascoe) Hi,

I am delighted to join this History group. I have become increasingly interested in history recently, and am keen to make some inroads into my canyon-sized gaps in knowledge in this field.

I had worked in psychology and neuroscience for decades, and my school classes on history were abysmal. And it seems more and more important to me, that we all know something about what really happened in the past--as much as the truth can be gleaned from the records.

I live in southern England, love dogs but am too lazy to have one, and avoid cooking as much as possible.

Wyatt (libertydude) Hey! My name is Wyatt, and I joined this group because I love history. When I first discovered books when I was little, I was fascinated by them. I was first interested in fiction and mystery, but then a love of history was developed.

So with me being a history buff, I've just found the idea of reading a biography on every President, and reviewing them. So I joined Goodreads, and eventually this group. My plan is to read a shorter bio (200-400 pages) on all of them because of time constraints.

I'm starting with
His Excellency George Washington by Joseph J. Ellis
because I read some great reviews on it, and it's not that long. Are there any great bios you can recommend to me on any President? Thanks in advance

Andy Barham | 1 comments Hi my name is Andy... I live in England.
My work is in I.T. but my passion is for History. I have been interested in all English history since visiting castles and cathedrals as a child. Specialist subject is the English Civil War but most pre-1700 periods interest me plus the "Victorian Wars". Did my History degree whilst working - finished that in 2013 - and was lucky to get a First - something I am very proud of!
Nice to be involved in a group with like-minded History enthusiasts.
Always on the look out for new Historical Non-Fiction and Fiction to read and study!

Ciera (cfree7) | 1 comments Hi everyone, my name is Ciera! I'm 20 and from the United States (Colorado, specifically). I enjoy reading about all history but what originally sparked my love for this subject was ancient history. I love learning about the ancient Greeks/Romans and Egyptians. I also like English history and American history. This year one of my goals is to read more nonfiction and I thought I would start here since history is one of my passions!

Amber wrote: "Hello Wyatt! Thats a great idea to read about every president. Only one i have ever read was " Lion in the Whitehouse" i loved it."

Amber remember to do citations like Vicki showed you - we are here to help - but I have no idea what the book is or who the author is to help you with the citation. Is it possible you have the title incorrect?
