Still not correct but thank you for trying - we add the book cover, the author's photo and the author's link. We are here to help you get the hang of it and in no time you will.

Check back to message 2397 - Vicki was kind enough to give you a sample citation and three links following to help you out further with the citations.

What you have added is the link rather than the book cover first.

Lion in the White House A Life of Theodore Roosevelt by Aida D. Donald by Aida D. Donald (no photo)

I have shown the citation example. Book cover, the word by then the author's photo if available - in the case of your book there is not one, then the author's link which is there and then at the end add the following (no photo) - showing that you did look for the author's photo but there wasn't one.

The Mechanics of the Board link will help you tremendously.

I am glad that Wyatt has a copy of the book you recommended. That is cool.

Welcome to The History Book Club, David. There are many topics for you to peruse and we have discussions on lots of different books. Hope you can join in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

European history
Middle East history

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

Samuel Hey everyone! My name is Samuel and just recently graduated from college with a degree in History. Love the study of history (interests span from African American, African, Islamic, and Christian history).

message 2008: by Yang Ming (new)

Yang Ming Ma | 1 comments Hello, my name is Ocean Ma. I am a Chinese international student studying in Canada now. I love history and literature since they let me think a lot when I read them. Currently I still have some difficulty in reading adult history and literary work written by English, but I try to understand as much as I can.

I am interested in atlas history since I wonder the connection of different countries, different cultures and how they make the current world. I know it is a very big question and the only way to find out the answer is to do as much reading as I can.

Ocean Ma - hello - I am Bentley.

I want you to post as much as you can and we will try to help you with your English as well.

You might have said - I am a Chinese international student currently studying in Canada. That would be better than placing now at the end of the sentence. In the next sentence you might want to say - written in English and not say written by English. The word in is a better choice.

You then said in the next sentence - since I wonder the connection of different countries. I think you might want to say - since I wonder about the connection between different countries.

I want to tell you how magnificently you do write in English and I would never be able to write in Mandarin with such facility or at all.

My son speaks fluent Mandarin and lived in Shanghai and travels to Beijing often - He is an architect - I know how difficult it was for him - so I am very empathetic and want to help you as much as I can. We are thrilled that you are joining us and we do hope you enjoy your stay with us and become active and post a lot. You are off to a fabulous start.

You will hear from Vicki tomorrow who will post a helpful note to you welcoming you and letting you know how you can get started.

message 2010: by Mukund (new)

Mukund | 1 comments Hello, everyone. I'm Mukund, from India. I'm a Metallurgist by profession, but I have grown a profound interest in World History. This interest stems from my eagerness to learn about the events that have led to the present situation of the respective countries. I like History told as a story which breathes life into it. Books that list events with dates and just state some bleak information do not interest me. It is my dream, to one day, have read at least one book on History of all the countries in the world.
Some of my favorites are:
Glimpses of World History by Jawaharlal Nehru
We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families by Philip Gourevitch
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich A History of Nazi Germany by William L. Shirer
Raiders from the North (Empire of the Moghul, #1) by Alex Rutherford (Although fictionized, it is a beautiful narrative)
A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

message 2011: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Brewer | 2 comments Hello, my name is Dustin. I am a biologist currently working in Florida. Native American history (particularly set in the mid-western United States, where I am from) interests me, as do history of science books. Most recently I have read Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C. Gwynne, 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann, and A Beautiful Question: Finding Nature's Deep Design by Frank Wilczek. The latter provided an interesting history of physics as a scientific field.

Hello Sara - we do not allow links like that. We are not big on Nazis here - we have a thread on them because they existed but that is it. We do not condone their behavior in any way. In fact quite the opposite - it was a very dark historic period for Germany and the world.

However you can edit your post and add the citation of your favorite book this way:

KL A History of the Nazi Concentration Camps by Nikolaus Wachsmann by Nikolaus Wachsmann Nikolaus Wachsmann

If it is not edited - we will have to delete your post. Thank you

We are happy to have you join us.

My name is Emily and I'm from Australia. I've done postgraduate study in both history and literature with a primary focus on the Italian Renaissance but I'm interested in all periods. I was the kind of kid that read the thesaurus in bed and haven't really put a book down since! I'm looking forward to finding new books and recommendations and hoping for some interesting discussions.

I also have an avid interest in popular culture and how it reflects and challenges the period in which it was produced.

A few of my favorite books include:

Robert Kennedy and His Times by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.

Founding Brothers The Revolutionary Generation by Joseph J. Ellis by Joseph J. Ellis Joseph J. Ellis

I'm attempting to read through Durant's monstrous 11-volume Story of Civilization (which goes up to the French Revolution) while simultaneously reading classic literature from that time period. So I started with Gilgamesh and am moving forward from there. This is going to be a long but fascinating journey and I look forward to the many discoveries along the way.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Pop (sauraspop) | 4 comments Hi, I'm Pop, American born and resident of the USA for 70+ years. Reading, listening to audio-books, movies and documentaries are among some of the things I love during these years of retirement. I read many genres, history of the US and Westerns being among my favorites. Because I was born just as WWII ended and because of my participation in the Vietnam War, these two wars are of great interest as is also the Civil War (both non-fiction and historical fictional). My last historical book was "A Blaze of Glory (Civil War 1861-1865, Western Theater, #1) by Jeff Shaara. Glad to be joining y'all.

Welcome new members! You might want to check out our 50 BOOKS IN 2017 section. You can see what other folks have been reading and may find great suggestions there. Or you may want to participate. (You don't actually have to reach the goal of 50 books, but it's nice to have something to shoot for.)

Larry Conlin | 1 comments Salve!

I have been stuck in a Roman History rut and want to expand my historical knowledge empire. I am joining to find quality content suggested by like-minded individuals, such as you all in this here club.

I read a combination of speculative fiction, science fiction, philosophy, history, and cookbooks, not necessarily in that order.

Thanks for including me!

Joel (joeldick) | 68 comments Hi Larry,

Try Tom Holland's Persian Fire: The First World Empire and the Battle for the West. He's got some other great books about the Roman Empire, which I highly recommend, but the one I mentioned goes back to the Persians vs Greeks at the events surrounding the Battle of Salamis.

If you like speculative fiction, you might also like Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead, basis of the movie The 13th Warrior.

I'm a history buff, love reading about everything from ancient Greece and Rome to European Renaissance to medieval politics to the Cold War. Particularly interested in World War II and the Holocaust. I wish I had more time to get through all the books on my growing 'to read' stack. Glad to be part of the History Book Club.

Jared Hello all, my name is Jay from the US. I have a degree in Political Science / International Relations but my interests have always been nearer to history - particularly the 18th and 19th century Atlantic world, and comparative history in general.

I am principally interested in the Palatine experience and migration to North America in the early 1700s, as my ancestors entered the country in this manner.

A few books that I've enjoyed are listed below:

Becoming German The 1709 Palatine Migration to New York by Philip Otterness by Philip Otterness Philip Otterness

Early Eighteenth Century Palatine Emigration A British Government Redemptioner Project to Manufacture Naval Stores by Walter Allen Knittle by Walter Allen Knittle Walter Allen Knittle

Nitin Thakur (nitraj) | 1 comments Greetings of the day dear Readers,

I am Nitin (age: 25), from New Delhi, India. I am an Engineer by profession and currently preparing for Civil Services Examination, aiming to become a diplomat one day.

Though, i joined goodreads way back in 2015. But recently got active. I am curious and inclined towards the history in particular Political history, as i believe if one wants to know the Todays World, History is the first resort, especially while determining the Political scenario in International Relations. So, my quest to know more about the world brought me to join the group, where i could get personal references to the books by many of you. Furthermore, i am particularly interested to know about the America, Europe ( including UK, if one exclude it after the Brexit mess), Russia and yup, China for sure. I would also like to add Tibet and Israel- Palestine, as i have got bit more interested in them recently.

I hope, and i am sure, we all can discuss issues which the world is facing. And i end now to have all of us together soon with this bright quote by Socrates," I cannot teach anybody anything, i can only make them think".

DanyR | 1 comments Hello everyone,
I´m Dája, 16 year old, from Czech Republic in the middle Europe. I´m currently studying at the gymnasium and really interested in history. I like reading especially about the evolution of europe politics, it can be such a beckoning topic to compare and debate. Although I would just be happy to follow up anything, which has something common with history.
Hope this will be amazing place.
