Welcome to our group, Patricia! I totally sympathize with the difficulty of a growing to-read list.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

Ancient history
Renaissance

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

Connie Hill (thefrugalhistorian) | 1 comments Hello, my name is Connie. I am a married mother of 4 - who loves American History. I recently graduated with my MA in Military History and I wrote my capstone on the use of African Americans and Women as spies during the American Civil War. I have always loved learning about the American Wars. Weather it was reading, watching a documentary or just absorbing discussions. My dad was in the Air Force, his dad was in the Army, and his brother was in the Navy. I suppose that is where I started hungering to learn. Glad to be here.

Jeff (murainman) | 79 comments Hi, I'm Jeff. I joined today to have another go-to place for conversations regarding presidential biographies, as I have started the challenge to read one for each POTUS. But I am also interested in the Holocaust and how humanity let that happen (it's not hard enough to understand, sadly). I read many other genres in between the biographies, but my interest in the presidents has three main origins: 1) A learned respect for the office in general and anyone who has the courage, strength, and ability to attain it. 2) A visit in 2011 to Washington DC that my wife planned which included a tour of the White House and a stroll through the WH Visitor's Center [highly recommend]. 3) A walking tour on that trip that traced the route of the investigation of Lincoln's assassination, followed a couple years later by a trip to Springfield, Illinois where exist all things Abe, including the only home that he and Mary ever owned, and his tomb.

Natalie Tyler (doulton) Greetings. My name is Natalie and I primarily read fiction and poetry but have turned more to history and biography in recent years and find that they really help me to amplify upon my understanding of fiction. I currently live in Ohio, but grew up in Connecticut.

I first contributed to this group noticing that one of my favorite works, "Dubliners" by James Joyce, was a buddy read. Dubliners by James Joyce

I have just ordered the Lindbergh biography: Lindbergh by A. Scott Berg

I would like to sign up for the reading group, but I cannot figure out where to do that because discussion is locked.

P.S. Beckmann Hello I live in Tennessee. Over the years I've lived and toured in Italy, seeking out the places off the beaten path. The way I stay in touch with my experiences in Italy is to write and read. The focus of my reading is 13th, 14th, and 15th century Italy. I find this era enormously complex with Pope, princes, city-states and roaming bands of mercenaries all vying for power. That coupled with the resurgence of art and literature makes this time period an endless sandbox for my imagination. I particularly like to read about foreigners such as Enguerrand de Coucy and John Hawkwood adventuring in Italy after fighting in the 100 years war.

Based on your introduction, I suggest you check out these threads:

European History
Renaissance

I suggest you also check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access the main page through this link:

HBC mainpage

Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books and authors that you mention should look:

Magnifico The Brilliant Life and Violent Times of Lorenzo de' Medici by Miles J. Unger by Miles J. Unger Miles J. Unger

Emile (emile1994) | 1 comments Hey!

I live in Antwerp (Belgium, Europe). I am a last year law student specializing in public law at the Catholic University of Leuven. I love public law because it interacts with so manny other study fields like: sociology, political science, philosophy and history. I just finished my comparative constitutional law exam and inspired by the history of the revolution i found this reading group. Besides that i like to read about Russia, eastern Europe, the balkans,.. .Actually every country with another culture. When I read I try to switch between fiction and non-fiction. My goal for this year is to read less Facebook and read more real books. I thought this group would be the right place to start!

Kind regards,
E.

Candace (cprimackqcom) Welcome to our recent new members. I'm in my first discussion and really enjoying it. (Well, I'm enjoying the read, and I will discuss soon. )

Li, Hi from a fellow Phoenician! (I was born in the South, but I've been here since 1995 and I'm not going anywhere!)

Mike, I was disappointed that I typed my introduction into the emailed link and it would not send . I tried twice and failed. However, when I went directly to the thread, everything was fine. Was this your problem?

Hope to see you all in the discussions!

Thomas we have already noticed you because you are spamming our site and self promoting on our group site. We have a very strong rule against spam and self promotion. That is why we delete all such posts. If you persist in spamming and setting up random threads promoting yourself - you will find yourself one group short.

message 2094: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Graham (goodreadscomgenevievegraham) I have to admit that I didn't have a clue about Historical Fiction until about 15 years ago. At that point I was finally done with diapers and high chairs and my mom handed me a book that was to eventually change my life:
Outlander (Outlander #1) by Diana Gabaldon by Diana Gabaldon

The 18th century swallowed me whole. I read her series seven times then went in search of more, eventually picking up the "Into the Wilderness" series
Into the Wilderness (Wilderness, #1) by Sara Donati by Sara Donati

And this series:
The Blood of Roses (Highlands, #2) by Marsha Canham Marsha Canham

Then I fell in love with the mid-West with
The Outsider by Penelope Williamson by Penelope Williamson

And over to Russia with
The Bronze Horseman (The Bronze Horseman, #1) by Paullina Simons by Paullina Simons

But I'm Canadian, and I hadn't fallen in love with anything talking about my own country's history. So I am now writing it. I won't post any links because I don't want to spam anyone.

Thanks for being here - I look forward to chasing down some of the books you all have posted!

Matthew (mberkeley) Hello, my name is Matthew. I am interested in history because I want to learn why the world is the way it is. I am hoping to find some good books on geopolitics and how cultures, philosophies and religions formed.

message 2100: by Zsófi (new)

Zsófi | 2 comments Hi, my name is Zsófi, and I'm from Budapest, Hungary. I have a BA in American Studies, and I almost finished my Juris Doctor program. Books are a safe haven for me, I have always enjoyed reading. I became interested in History when I found my research focus: colonial witch hunts in North America and the belief in sorcery in slaveholding states. Since ever, I have been focusing on this topic. I am currently working on two publications, and I have been giving lectures at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. My other area of interest is the development of women's rights in the Middle East and the influence of Islam on everyday life. I have traveled to Turkey, Egypt, and Afghanistan extensively and I am a passionate lover of the Iznik tiles and the culinary traditions of the Arabic and Turkish regions.
Otherwise, I am also interested in modern history since my grandfather fought in WWII and was held as a war prisoner near the Black Sea for five years. He was a devoted Lutheran and opposed both the Nazi and the Communist regimes since both of them heavily punished religious groups and disintegrated communities. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2003 and could not answer all my questions about those turbulent times. For better understanding his youth, I usually read family novels from that era.
