Katie (katiewilko_) Hey! My name is Katie, I am 15 years old and I live in the UK!
I really enjoy British and French History (particularly 15th- 17th centuries) I also love learning about the founding fathers of America (I'm obsessed with the musical Hamilton lol). My favourite book is 'crown of blood: the deadly inheritance of Lady Jane Grey' by Nicola Tallis.
I'm happy that I've found this group! :)

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Sara Sarno Hi! My name is Sara. I am 29 years old, and live in Pennsylvania. History and Historical Fiction are two of my favorite genres to read! I am currently reading Custer's Trials, which I noticed this book club will be reading soon! I am excited that I will be able to have people to share their opinion on the book with me!

I most like reading about the World Wars, the Civil War, and Tudor England. I think my favorite Historical book is All Quiet on the Western Front.

I look forward to talking with people who share a passion of history books with me!

I'm settling down into working and making friends in a new city. Looking to keep up on my reading: my studies have been focused on disaster history (natural, man made, genocide, civil war, etc..). I'm currently reading:

and

The Twilight of the Bombs Recent Challenges, New Dangers, and the Prospects for a World Without Nuclear Weapons by Richard Rhodes by Richard Rhodes

I've really wanted to learn more about South America so if you have any book recommendations from that area of the world (I read in Spanish so books in both languages would be appreciated).

I look forward to reading with you all. Cheers, Sam

Note for Scolvi from Joel:

Hi Joel,

We do not allow links to other segments of goodreads - it leads to self promotion and everything else.

However here is what you wrote ahead of that.

The opening section of The Alchemy of Air by Thomas Hager tells the story of the saltpeter mines of the Atacama Desert and it's role in some important events in South American history. It's only a part of the book, and only a part of South American history, but it's really well told.

Also, you should definitely check out One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. It is considered a modern classic.

The Lost City of Z A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann is also very popular now because it is being made into a movie.

The Alchemy of Air A Jewish Genius, a Doomed Tycoon, and the Scientific Discovery That Fed the World but Fueled the Rise of Hitler by Thomas Hager by Thomas Hager Thomas Hager

I was born and educated in England, lived for the better part of a decade in Brazil, and then moved with my spouse and two teenage boys (and a beagle and a husky) to Canada, which I love and where I plan to stay - and my passion is the way in which we communicate with one another - verbally, visually, tactilely. What I hope for in this group is to get a much broader understanding of why people read, how they come to choose what they put on their bookshelves, and - of course - how other authors manage to get their books to a public that would adore them!

Hi Tommaso,

If you like general history books, try Norman Davis's Europe. It's as sweeping as it gets. In terms of specific countries, Shirer's The The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is or course a classic on Germany in the Twentieth Century between the wars, while Christopher Clark's Iron Kingdom will help you understand the origins of the German nation. Barbara Tuchman's The Proud Tower covers the period from 1890 to the first world war and is extremely well regarded. Natasha's Dance by Orlando Figes is fairly recent and covers Russian history. Paul Johnson does a great job covering both American and European History. His A History of the American People is the standard one volume history of the USA. Thomas Pakenham's The The Scramble for Africa covers the European colonization of Africa.

Atar | 11 comments Hello History Book Club,
My name is Atar. I only started truly reading a few years ago but I love it and I can't wait to get into my book at the end of the night. I enjoy Military, African American, Influential people, Criminal justice, & enviormental history. Right now I'm focused on reading as much as I can about Iraq and Afghanistan's modern military history. Actually I plan on working my way backward from modern to ancient military history. Some might say that's also backwards but that's how I like it. So I'm happy to be here and I hope to have some good conversations with like minded folks.

Atar | 11 comments Hi Scolvi,
Thanks for your reply. I would love to recommend a few books. I will say the book you bought "Decent into Chaos" by Ahmed Rashid is a very good book. Well written and very informative, not just about Afghanistan but Central Asia & Pakistan. He also wrote a book called "Taliban" which a lot of the U.S. Military leaders & Politicians read after the war started. There are many other very good books but unfortunately this is my first time posting anything. I'm new to this and need some help. As you noticed I don't have pictures. Could you walk me through how to put them on a post. I tried "add book/author" but each time I tried it just left writing but no picture. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. Once I figure it out I will send you some books I really like. One last thing you said you worked in Afghanistan. If you don't mind me asking, what did you do?

Hi Atar,

For the book thing it's at the very bottom once you click add book/author you can choose link or cover for the books and link or image for authors. The html looks something like:
bookcover:Welcome to Night Vale|23129410 by authorimage:Joseph Fink|2559520 author:Joseph Fink|2559520 (just add the [ ] ) I hope that is clear....

As for my work in Afghanistan, I'm pretty sure I can't promote anything here so I will just say if you'd like to talk about it you can send me a PM.

If you still can't figure out how to reference the books - ask one of the moderators they are very helpful and I'm sure can steer you in the right direction.

I'm looking forward to your recommendations.

Hello, Atar. I’ll try to walk you through the citation process. When you click on the “add book/author” link just above the comment box, you type in the title of the book you want, click “Search” and when you see the book you are looking for, click the “cover” button at the bottom, then the “Add” button. Follow this with “by”, then click on the author link. If there’s a photo, click the “photo” button and add it, then click the “link” button and add that. If there’s no photo, just add the link to the author followed by “(no photo)”. I hope this helps.

Shawn Hello! I happily stumbled upon this group today. I was attracted to the Presidents series, as I have recently taken to reading nonfiction political works. I have quite a few nonfiction books on my TBR list, but feel like I need a little help getting started on them. I am also a life long history reader. I fell in love with history while in the 5th grade, learning/reading about the US Civil War. Recently I have been attracted to WWI and WWII related nonfiction. I am exciting to get involved with this group and join some of the monthly reads. I must say, a quick glance at this group is a bit intimidating, due to the large amount of material here. I feel like it will take some time to look through everything. As a side note, I'm from Pennsylvania. I look forward to getting involved!

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

Bryan Craig Welcome, Janette . Glad you could join us.

There are plenty of folders where you can find topics that interest you.

Cindy III | 1 comments Hello. I'm Cindy from California in the U.S. I've always enjoyed learning about history, but usually it was limited to textbooks in public school. (view spoiler) I think I liked it because it is the story of the world. Last year I got interested in World War I and its origins. I joined the group hoping to expand my history reading.
