Bryan Craig Welcome, Cindy. Glad you could join us. We have a topic on

World War One

There are also many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

Hello - I work in a diplomatic corps in an embassy in Africa. I enjoy a good drink, looking at the sky, and reading about turning points in history, military tragedies, evolutions of mere mortals into great leaders (TE Lawrence), why big things suddenly turned in a big way (so many examples), and what might the world look like if it had gone otherwise. I do enjoy solid historical fiction if it's a vehicle to describe non-fiction (Tree of Smoke, The Bridge Over The River Kwai, A Town Like Alice...). I also enjoy reading works in progress. I'm new here (obviously) so "Hello!" to all.

Tawallah | 40 comments Hello, I'm June and I live in Barbados 🇧🇧. I have enjoyed history from school days. From first form I learnt ancient history, Middle Ages, Caribbean history as well as World History from First World War up until the Cold War. And at one point was being pressured to studying geography instead. Nope, history is too fascinating and I stuck with it. There are some gaps in my knowledge but I'm quite happy to get back into history.

I tend to read more historical fiction but may willing to tackle non fiction more. And seeing the group with the summer recommendations made me check out this group. Liking what I see and hopefully I can learn some more about one of my favorite subjects. I am eclectic reader so I'll read whatever intrigues me.

Rt (rtrt) | 1 comments Hello! My name is Rich, and I'm a big fan of studying history. My grandfather instilled in me a love of history (and reading) early on, and it stuck! I also enjoy fiction, but historical nonfiction is my favorite genre. I'm glad I found this group! I've listed some of my recent favorite reads below:

Titan The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow
Seabiscuit An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand by Laura Hillenbrand
D-Day, June 6, 1944 The Battle for the Normandy Beaches by Stephen E. Ambrose by Stephen E. Ambrose

Thanks for letting me join!

Living in Northern VA, I have access to many civil war battlefields which my family and I try to visit on weekends.

Ivan (ivanatman) Hi, my name is Ivan. I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia. Been around in Goodreads since 2007 but just came across this great club today! I enjoy reading non-fiction, biographies, and history. Just recently finished reading two Yuval Noah Harari's remarkable accounts on Homo Sapiens. I've also read the Sympathizer by Mr. Nguyen (what a great journey and the sacrifice and fights to come to America are inspiring.) I'm definitely going to read his new book, The Refugee. Looking forward for amazing discussion in this club!

Cheers,
Ivan

I like history for a multitude of reasons but more than anything, I like reading about experiences that are unlike my own. Trying to understand experiences that I never truly will. I like to listen, basically. I like to care. People and their stories matter to me. I'm not sure if I'll always keep up with stuff because I struggle with my mental health, but I'll do my best! I'm excited to learn.

Francis Hsu (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/5...) asked me to post this intro -

I was born in China after WW2. Like millions of others I was made a refugee by historical events. So history is not merely something read in books. We all experience history, good, bad or indifferent. Some of us are luckier than others: they can experience it from a safe distance. I guess the fact that my family and I could not made me interested in history. I wanted to understand. After a lifetime of survival, I am a lucky one now, I think I have grasped some understanding.

Margaret Stewart | 2 comments I'm Margaret from Melbourne, Australia. I collect World War II
books, especially those written in the first 20 or so years after the event. I also restore books, as an amateur with a little training. The aspect of war that interests me is the politics, prejudices, and differing views on past events. The last books I bought were about WW I, one from the Turkish point of view by an historian experienced in the area, and another series of new essays reviewing the Gallipoli and Anzac myth and reality.

Richard | 4 comments Hi, I'm Richard in Bishop's Stortford, a medium-sized town in southeast England.

I study a wide variety of subjects informally but only Computing & IT formally (I've just completed Stage 1 of a part-time BSc with the UK's Open University). I recently read The New Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts, and have made a start on Europe: A History by Norman Davies and Antony Beevor's The Second World War. I also very much enjoyed both of Andrew Marr's histories of Britain.

On the horizon for me are: a book on the First World War (or the TV series based on John Keegan's one volume history of the war), the audio book of Christopher Lee's This Sceptred Isle, a book on American history, and possibly histories of Asia, Africa, South America and other places after that. But once I'm employed in IT I might find I just have no time to read more history.

I'd like to develop the ability how to talk/write conversationally and sometimes irreverently about history and other subjects. I don't really think in formal, pedantic language, but I regularly find myself forced to maintain an uncomfortably stuffy façade after sending pompous emails.

I'm looking forward to participating in some fun and interesting discussions with members of the group.

Welcome to our group, Jeff! We have many different topics and books being discussed here so please feel free to explore and jump in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

American Civil War
Presidential Series

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

Richard welcome - we appreciate your wonderful introduction and we are delighted to have you join us. I think you will find a lot to interest you.

Jeff - very good - you are in a great field for social media - why do folks think they are anonymous on the web and act like they never would in somebody's living room face to face. I always ask myself that since we are volunteers trying to "keep the trains running" on our site. We love history too and non fiction so we hope that you can dive into the conversations and add your own opinions to the threads and also any interesting books. We find that reading and discussing great books is very relaxing and a wonderful way to spend your free time. A lot of us switch back and forth between genres too so you should feel right at home.

Welcome, new members! You might want to check out our 50 BOOKS IN 2017 section. You can see what other folks have been reading and may find great suggestions there. Or you may want to participate. (You don't actually have to reach the goal of 50 books, but it's nice to have something to shoot for.)

Patia I'm Patia from the United States. Right now I'm pursuing studies in STEM, but I have always loved history. I believe studying history is the easiest and most effective way to understand why the world is the way it is now, and gives us a direction of what we can do in the future to make the world a better place. History is also really fascinating for me. I'm interested in reading about places that I don't know that much about, like eastern Europe, Japan, South America, and Africa. I'm happy to join this community!

Christine - LifeWithAllTheBooks Hi, I'm Christie from Scotland. I am interested in most aspects of history, especially areas that are new to me and I don't know much about. I have read a lot about Ancient Rome, the Tudors, the 17th and 18th century and the Edwardian period. I am particularly interested in fashion through the ages as I study something that involves a lot of fashion history.
