Oswald Santos | 2 comments Hi! I'm Oswald from the Philippines. Always loved history since I was little and finished A History of the World (Marvin Perry) when I was 10. Love to read about World War II, Philippine-American War, the American Revolution, French Revolution, the British monarchy and the Kennedy years. Already working as a software engineer, I'm still planning to take a degree in History. Hope this group has some recommended books for historiography as well.

Welcome to the group, Oswald--we are glad you found us. We have discussions on all aspects of history so please feel free to join in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

American Revolution
World War II

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

message 2507: by Michael (last edited Jun 24, 2017 03:20PM) (new)

Michael (migpie) Hello everyone! I'm very happy to be here, and to discover some new titles. I'm a graduate school professor in humid (and historical) Virginia, and an unapologetic book nerd. I tend to be eclectic in my reading tastes -- fiction, thrillers, classics, poetry, sci-fi, history, and historical fiction, primarily. Why not, right?

In terms of history, I prefer books where the writer has clearly done gobs of research, but hasn't overwhelmed me with that research. Quality of writing is very important to me; the ability to tell complex stories in an engrossing, page-turning way. I want the human side of each story, not just facts. Some titles that did that for me include The River of Doubt and Destiny of the Republic (both by Candice Millard), as well as In the Kingdom of Ice, by Hampton Sides. I also just started The Last Stand, by Nathaniel Philbrick, which I am enjoying thus far.

I am most interested in American history – the darkness, tragedies, ambitions, successes, delusions and foibles of the famous and not-so-famous individuals that helped shape this country (or at least left a mark on it, for better or worse). I am not afraid to go dark. History, like fiction, is best for me when the conflicts feel palpable and the struggles are laid bare.

Anyway. Thanks for having me. Now I need to scour these pages for inspiration!

The River of Doubt Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard and Destiny of the Republic A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard by Candice Millard In the Kingdom of Ice The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides by Hampton Sides The Last Stand Custer, Sitting Bull, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn by Nathaniel Philbrick by Nathaniel Philbrick

Hello Irene - we do not allow any self or group promotion. I have reposted your wonderful introduction here minus the offending segment and we are glad to have you with us:

Hi all!

My name is Irene and I've been active on Goodreads since last fall as I've recently begun to get back into reading books on a regular basis. ...... I try to mix up the type of books on my reading list, and fiction, comics, non-fiction has been my most categories. As I recently bought Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right it's inspired me to really dive into reading more history and incorporating these books into my regular reading practices.

Look forward to reading the books of the month, as well as finding new book recommendations!

Colburn and I've been interested in history since my grandmother started me telling me stories about my family's arrival in the Nebraska Territory when it opened for settlement. I have period phases--by that I mean I'm interested in different eras at different times. Right now I'm particularly interested in the 1930s. I know a lot about that period in the rural areas of the West because I live here and I've been hearing and reading about it for most of my life, but I'd like to know more about that same period of time in the nation's big cities.

Pablo, a warm welcome to you from all of us at the History Book Club. We are happy that you joined us from the beautiful country of Galicia.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following:

Medieval History
European History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how your books you mention should look:

SPQR A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard by Mary Beard Mary Beard

rogues | 3 comments Hello! I've technically been a GR member since 2015 but only recently (read: as of this week) have become active on the site. I'm based out of the US and love to read books on history/microhistory (interests vary from Latin American history, to WW2 history, to Roman history, etc.) and most recently I have been interested in British Victorian era history.

Currently, I'm looking to get my hands on a well-written, well-researched book on David Livingstone. If anyone has recommendations, it'd be much appreciated!

David Livingstone The Truth Behind the Legend by Rob Mackenzie byRob Mackenzie(no photo)
Livingstone by Tim Jeal by Tim Jeal Tim Jeal - a critical (antagonistic ?) biography
Into Africa The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone by Martin Dugard by Martin Dugard Martin Dugard - not the best but a smooth read
