Tiffany.....Welcome to the place for all things history. There is much here that will meet your reading preferences.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

American Revolution
Napoleon

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

Caesar Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy by Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

That is also my favorite period in history. So many Frenchmen, of course, fought in the American Revolution and brought the ideas home and became instigators of the French Revolution. Lafayette and the Duc de Lauzun, (later the Duc de Biron) to name just two.

Stefano Cariolato | 1 comments Hello everyone from a new member.
I am a computer engineer, passionate about history and science, and I live in Rome. I have read some of the HBC published posts , noticing your interest in roman history of the period that preceded the dawn of Empire, as well as other posts regarding the real motivations of the second amendment and its foundation on the right of people to oppose any threat of tyranny. I had the strange feeling that in this moment some of you are not only interested in history, but also worried about the current political situation and the prevailing of nationalist or authoritarian regimes in the world, as it was in the thirties of the past century. If this could be a reason of the emerging interest in those topics I would appreciate your comments about.
It is also possible that my remarks are not right but simply motivated by the current Italian situation that I live, so if I am wrong please don't be offended, I wrote this comment in good faith.

Lindsay Hello everyone, I'm Lindsay. I live in the United States, in Pennsylvania, and I'm an attorney. My father is a history lover, and instilled that in me at an early age (when I was ten he thought it would be very funny to get me to memorize all of the US Presidents in order and have me bust out my strange knowledge at parties), and as I went through college law school my own particular historical interests branched and grew.

So far this year I've read The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine who Outwitted America's Enemies (absolutely fantastic), and Women of Will: The Remarkable Evolution of Shakespeare's Female Characters (which I believe counts because it went quite in depth to Shakespeare's life, the lives of his fellow prominent actors and patrons, and English society of the time).

Right now I'm working on The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England. I'm looking forward to getting more suggestions and reviews from this group!

Mario the lone bookwolf (mariothelonebookwolf) Hi!

I am 32, from Austria and totally into science fiction, fantasy, humor and science topics and always trying to widen my range.
I try to read as many different authors as possible. But I fail because of a serious lack of consequence so that I often get stuck with series. I really try to avoid that trap.

I have read many of the old and new science fiction, humor and fantasy authors and series. The old ones are sometimes harder to read and I am lazy.
And there are not many easier Titans of my favorite genres left I can read.
With the new ones I have the problem that I don´t certainly know how good they will be. And I don´t want to be the one who runs in the blade of an unsatisfying read. A lack of altruism I guess.
Instead, I wait until the book has enough positive reviews on which I can rely. That´s not gentleman style, I know.
But I cherish people who sacrifice themselves for the sake of other readers with uncertain, newly published books. There should be monuments build for them.

I think the best way to read good books is to cooperate with readers who have similar reading interests. And in the brilliant concept of Goodreads to connect this knowledge to rankings and lists.
I base most of my reading choices on Listopia and have never regretted it. Human swarm intelligence is on its rise.

Best regards

Anthony Ragan (anthony_ragan) Howdy!

I'm Anthony. I live in California, and I've been in love with History my entire life. As a kid, when on visits to relatives' homes. I would read the history sections of country entries in the encyclopedia, because it was more interesting than anything the adults were doing. Later I did my BA at UCLA in History, specializing in Roman and Renaissance History, and was doing a PhD when life took me on another path, though I still work at UCLA.

It's to say what I'm not interested in, when it comes to historical reading, though, if I had to concentrate, I would say the ancient Mediterranean and the Early Republic period of the US (through 1824). But, that could change on a whim - my current reading revolves around Josef Stalin, Winston Churchill, and James K. Polk.

My favorite historians include Gordon Wood, Victor Hanson, Adrian Goldsworthy, and David McCullough.

I'm looking forward to the discussions here. :)

Mark (maximusdementis) | 789 comments Welcome! I am familiar with Goldsworthy and McCullouch, but not the other two historians you mention. Which books from them do you recommend as an introduction to their expertise?

Hanson is a Classicist who specializes in military history. My favorite so far is "Carnage and Culture," though his recent book on WWII has been getting very good reviews.

Gordon Wood is one of the preeminent historians of the early American republic. I recently read "The Radicalism of the American Revolution" and quite enjoyed it. :)

Mark wrote: "Welcome! I am familiar with Goldsworthy and McCullouch, but not the other two historians you mention. Which books from them do you recommend as an introduction to their expertise?"

Hello Mark, thank you for welcoming Anthony - do not forget to cite the authors.

We love authors and books too; and if you cite them properly - they are easy for our members to link to - but most importantly it allows our powerful goodreads software to populate the site and it notes where each author and book is mentioned which will allow our members to access any thread where a specific author or book has been discussed anywhere on our site.

Check the white space to the right and you will see a list of books and authors that are mentioned on this thread with links. If you see the word Other - and if you click on Other - it will take you to other threads where the book or author are also discussed. That only happens when the books and authors are cited properly so that is why we have citation standards on the site which are a ship to learn.

Let me show you how the authors you mentioned are cited:

For authors we add first - the author's photo when available and then the author's link which is their name in linkable text.

Adrian Goldsworthy Adrian Goldsworthy

David McCullough David McCullough

Also this is the thread for introductions and welcomes and for our moderators and other members to say hello. We have many other threads where we encourage you to post the books and the authors that you like. it is a huge site.

Ha..."

Anthony Welcome - Vicki one of my moderators will be along shortly to welcome you personally and give you some helpful hints and links.

Please read the note that I left for Mark. I know it will help you too.

I like Gordon Wood too. But we always cite books and authors.

For books we add the bookcover, a space, the word by, a space, then the author's photo when available and always the author's link. If the author's photo is not available - we simply add (no photo) at the end. If there is no book cover - we add (no image) at the beginning.

Let me show you how books that you mentioned in your response to Mark should look like with our standard.

The Radicalism of the American Revolution by Gordon S. Wood by Gordon S. Wood Gordon S. Wood

And for Hanson and his book - this is how that should be posted:

Carnage and Culture Landmark Battles in the Rise of Western Power by Victor Davis Hanson by Victor Davis Hanson Victor Davis Hanson

We are delighted to have you with us and Vicki will be along very soon. I just wanted to help out here so that there were not more citations that need to be added as examples (smile).

Michelle as the pop up window indicated we do not allow self promotion.

If you would like to introduce yourself again without mentioning that you are a writer or advertising your book or without any further self promotion - that would be very much appreciated and we would look forward to reading your new post and welcoming you to our group.

We also do not allow self promoting links to your website. We delete all such posts.

So if you would be so kind, please repost indicating your first name or how you are identified on goodreads, why you like history and why you wanted to join this group (without mentioning your craft, your book or your blog). Thank you so much - we work very hard to keep this thread and our group free from spam.

We have a lot authors and writers in this group and we welcome them all - but we ask all of them to follow our rules and guidelines too.

Thank you for understanding.

Alexandra (alxndrsnts) | 1 comments Hello Everyone,

My name is Alexandra. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in history. I have always been an avid reader and lover of books. However, I am new to goodreads. As a child, my father and I bonded over our mutual love of history and that interest has always stuck with me. My favorite area is American, but I enjoy learning about all history. I was drawn to this group not only because of the subject matter but because of the global community. I have lived in New York City my entire life. I am a staff writer for my schools newspaper and enjoy writing articles on various subjects. I also love nature, photography and traveling.

I’ve been living in Australia since 1984. My home state is Connecticut. I was never interested in history at school- it was all about memorising dates and places. It wasn’t until I read historical stories to my children that I really developed an interest.
I am enjoying reading what the book club has chosen and am learning a lot too!

Caitlin, I know that Lorna will be along shortly to welcome you but I wanted you to know that we are delighted that you were brave enough to post for the first time and we hope that you will sign up for the discussions and be brave enough to post your opinions, ideas, and thoughts again.

We welcome everyone - shy or not (smile). But what we hope will happen is for folks like yourself to take the first step and say hello
because we want to be a group where everybody feels comfortable about expressing their views and that there are no right or wrong answers here. Your view is your view and we respect that. We will add historical background and sources to help you but at the end of the day we want you and everybody else to feel safe and welcomed here and most importantly respected.

The way that you are helping is by your example. Maybe you will inspire other members to come of the shadows and say hello. That way when you do post it will be like hearing from an old friend and folks will feel comfortable posting back.

You did a good thing Caitlin and I applaud your courage. And we do hope that you will expand your reading and knowledge here as well.

Delighted to get to know you.

I love reading, it's a way to pass my free time and also a way to educate myself about everything that's going on in the world, and although I don't have a favourite genre I find it important to read stories that start real conversations. I want to start reading more about history to educate myself about the important facts and stories that had an impact on our present, the good things and also the tragedies. I can't wait to start reading along with this group and get recommendations, that can be non-fiction, biographies, memoirs or historical fiction as well. Also, is there a full list (PDF or word) with every book that has been read here? thanks and good to meet everyone

Barbara (barbaranickless) | 1 comments I'm Barbara. I live in Colorado, at the foot of Pikes Peak. I read both fiction and nonfiction, and I love history--especially WWI, WWII, political commentary and books that drill down into a particular country or city. I'm excited to look at the reading lists and see what others are saying. Right now I'm reading a lot about Iran and the Middle East, including:

America's Great Game The CIA's Secret Arabists and the Shaping of the Modern Middle East by Hugh Wilford by Hugh Wilford Hugh Wilford

Another Reminder:

As the pop up window indicated we do not allow self promotion.

Please do not mention that you are a writer/novelist or advertising your book or any self promotion - no matter how innocent.

We have a universal standard on that sort of thing.

We also do not allow self promoting links to our website. We delete all such posts with or without such links which are self promoting.

So if you would be so kind if we send you an explanation, please repost indicating your first name or how you are identified on goodreads, why you like history and why you wanted to join this group (without mentioning your craft, your book or your blog). Thank you so much - we work very hard to keep this thread and our group free from spam.

We have a lot authors and writers in this group and we welcome them all - but we ask all of them to follow our rules and guidelines too. I know some authors and novelists have told me well that is my craft and we know that. But unlike a carpenter or a lawyer or a public accountant for example - you have a page on goodreads which promotes you already, your books, blogs or whatever. We would prefer that there is no promotion here as we want to shield our members from advertising and self promotion. I hope you all understand.

Thank you for in advance for your cooperation.

Welcome Barbara to the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from Colorado at the foot of Pikes Peak, one of my favorite places in this beautiful state that I call home as well.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following focus areas:

The First World War
The Second World War

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mentioned should look:

America's Great Game The CIA's Secret Arabists and the Shaping of the Modern Middle East by Hugh Wilford by Hugh Wilford (no photo)

Here were i live we learn more world history and brazilian history. It’s a little bit more different. I hope i can make some progress...
I hope here i can learn a bit more about the subject. History it is so interesting and so broad. There is always something to talk. And history is being made everyday. And we all make it every moment. It is important to remind the things from the past to try change the future.
And the funny fact about history it is that all the big moments of history of humanity were made of big changes. And a lot of human sharing made part what we humans are today. I think this it is important. When the humanity got united to change knowledge we grew up more. And i think that is what all humans need today to advance.

Tom Mathews I've been participating in this group for a while now but don't think I have previously introduced myself.

I'm Tom. I live in California but I grew up in Maryland and Colorado. I have always been interested in history. If I had to rank my favorite areas it would be mostly American, Mexican, and military history although I enjoy reading about a lot of other history as well.

I believe that now, more than ever, we must heed George Santayana's warning that "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Welcome, new members! You might want to check out our 50 BOOKS IN 2018 section. You can see what other folks have been reading and may find great suggestions there. Or you may want to participate. (You don't actually have to reach the goal of 50 books, but it's nice to have something to shoot for.)

Have long been interested in all things historical - old villages, historic figures ... More recently, that extended to medieval England, and its manor system. Got a great kick out of exploring the considerable collections of Ancient Deeds and Rolls in the UK. My home is Toronto, Canada, although have lived in the Europe and the UK, to where I went after leaving my native NZ.

Mary Ann Chandler Hello, My name is Mary Ann Chandler from the USA. My love for history goes back to high school where I was lucky to have teachers passionate about it. I majored in history (focusing on European medieval and Renaissance periods)in college. But spent my career in finance. Now that I am retired I can spend more time reading; my goal is to read at least one non-fiction book each month along with one fiction. I belong to two book groups- one focuses on history. I am focusing on US history lately. I just finished Michael Korda’s Grant biography, short but a good introduction. Plan to tackle Chernow’s Grant sometime this year.
