My name is Rod Beecham. I was born in Melbourne, Australia, where I currently live. I studied English literature, but my interests, in postgraduate years, turned more specifically to history and the relationships between language, patterns of thought and decision-making. My doctoral thesis was entitled, 'When Words Fail: Language and British Perceptions of the First World War.' I endorse Louis Namier's view that an historian should be entertaining, for which reason I admire the work of his pupil, A.J.P. Taylor, and that of Barbara Tuchman. Other historians I admire include Simon Schama and Anthony Beevor.

Hi, Michelle here. Always been a reader (classic's, juvenile, young adult, occassional mystery and sci-fi, with a healthy helping of non-fiction- science, psychology, history, and biography, etc ); but in recent years have delved more deeply into history with author's such as Howard Zinn, Michael Parenti, Malcom X, John Gatto, and others. I still love fiction, but my history reads have really opened up new worlds of thought for me and would love to hear other opinions on these and other works. I likely have large gaps in my knowledge but I am working to remedy that and having a grand time. I look forward to a lot of inspiration here.

If you look to the whitespace to the right - you can see that when the citations are done properly - it is very powerful and the goodreads software then lists all books and authors mentioned on each thread and you can also click on (other topics) and find out where on the site the book or author has also been discussed.
We have many monthly discussions and threads on many subjects - the folders are listed alphabetically.
Hi redroc11 from the United States. I love history books because unlike fantasy or sci-fi books what happens is real. I love learning about people and events from the past. The reason I joined this group was so that I could find good history books and get more then my own perspective on them.

Hi, first of all, nice to meet you all!!My name is Pablo and I am from Argentina. By the way, it's good to see other Argentinian as well. :)
I am an Electronic Engineer and as a secondary activity I teach at the University here in my country, the subject: Electronic Communication Systems.
Beyond my formal profesion, reading is my passion. I really love to read about everything and everywhere! If I can metioned something that describe myself, I would say it's my interest to adquire new knowledge no matter the topic. The downside of it, in general, it's difficult for me to focus in something because I just jump to one topic to the other. Anyway, take or leave it, I enjoy it a lot and I am not thinking about to change it in the near future. :P
About History, I would say that two year ago I went to phase of reading a lot about Middle East History, focusing in Middle East Conflict which I consider really an amasing and fascinating topic.
Hope to find people that share same pasion and I will look forward to have conversations about anything we read.

Hello, my name is Rachel Adiyah (Adiyah is NOT my last name). To make it easy you can call me R.A. I am a licensed social worker from the Philly suburbs. I am American. My major in college was History; I studied the social history of modern and contemporary Japan. These days I'm interested in the social history of women in Europe from let's say 1100 C.E. - 1830 C.E. I stop at 1830 because I really despise the Victorian period; that queen sucked the life out of the world. (With an exception for France; I will read about France up to 1900 because aside from the fashions they never really had a Victorian age.)
I also enjoy reading the historical biographies of both prominent women and notorious bad girls. My favorite biography of all time has to be The Girl Who Loved Camellias: The Life and Legend of Marie Duplessis. She was only fourteen when she began life as a courtesan in Second Empire France and died of tuberculosis at age twenty-one, but what a life she led!
I'm hoping to meet other people who enjoy history as much as I do.

Hello,My name is Elliot, and I'm from the USA, specifically California. I'm a college student studying engineering, but history is my passion, and I'm grateful for the opportunity that my college library presents to me in terms of the books available! I am particularly interested in military history, and have been on a frenzy of reading books about the Napoleonic Wars and the British army. Recently, I've read some books on Scottish and English history as well. Last year I rekindled my passion for reading when I discovered Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, and I've had a book in my hand ever since.
This is my first group I've joined on Goodreads, and my first real social interaction here, so I'm a little curious to see how things work, but I look forward to seeing lots of interesting books and meeting people who share my interests.

Hello everyone! My name is Alice, I'm 23 and I'm from Italy. I study English and Russian, so I've spent most of the last years abroad: Vilnius, Moscow and, currently, Johannesburg, where I'm planning to move to to live with my partner. Reading has been one of my biggest passions since I learned how to decipher the alphabet, when I was 5. Since then I've never stopped looking for new books. My favorite books are nonfiction books, especially about literature, linguistics and history. At the moment my readings are determined by my university courses since I'm still studying in a Master's, but luckily they perfectly meet my interests. Thank this group my reading list has become much longer than it used to be. I am happy to be part of it.

Hello everyone! I have been an avid reader for over 55 years and have always loved history books. The past few years I’ve been devouring books on the British Royal Family, the Old West – particularly books about water (dams, rivers, drought etc.), WWII, current affairs and any books referencing a location I plan on visiting. My name is Gene Pantalone, I invite you to view my profile to learn more about me. I am from the United States. I would like friends on Goodreads that share my interest in sports history, military history, or history in general. I was glad to find this history group with like-minded readers. Given the news of Korea as of late, I have been reading books on the Korean War at this time; many not listed on Goodreads. I even contacted a Medal of Honor recipient from the Korean War, Ronald E. Rosser, and had some great phone conversations with him--history first-hand is even better than a book. He was more than willing to discuss his time in Korea from 1951-1952. My other great interest is sports history, especially boxing, which was more popular than today's football at one time. I like to consider myself an expert in the golden age of boxing, 1920-1950.
I will be reading a manuscript from a friend soon for his pitch to a publisher. I won't describe the subject since that would break the group rules. I feel honored to get manuscripts and advanced copies of books for review.
If anyone has recommendations on sports history books or Korean War books, it would be much appreciated. I look forward to this group and conversations with its members. Finally, a thanks to Bentley for creating this group.

Hello! My name is Meirav, I'm 34 from Israel.
I work in a tech company as a database researcher. I have six cats that I love very much. My other hobby is knitting and crochet (I'm a knitting and single cat lady - walking cliche here).
I joined Goodreads because almost a year ago I noticed I barely read and I wanted to improve that. I've been steadily changing my daily habits so that now I have more time to read.
My favorite periods and subjects to read about in history are World War 2 and the holocaust, ancient Rome and World War 1. But I'm a sucker for any history.

Welcome to the board. (This isn't an official moderator's welcome, just FYI.) I have two cats and I love them with all of my heart, so I totally understand how you feel.
I love history, as well, although I focus mainly on the histories of England, France, and Italy from 1000-1900. And to qualify that statement, I prefer social history and women's history. The historical biographies of royal and other powerful women such as kings' mistresses and wealthy courtesans also fascinates me.
Ancient Rome was a very interesting period of time. I know when I bought

Hello fellow history lovers! My name is Tara, and I am from New York City, not so small town USA. I have been a huge history buff since my teens, and I continue to try to squeeze in as much non-fiction as I can into my other reading interests (which include cooking, GA murder mysteries, and all things Tolkien to name a few). While I enjoy reading about many eclectic historical topics, the areas I focus on the most are WWII, American Revolution and Tudor England.
