Steve Price (poguemahone61) | 1 comments Hi all,
I live in East Yorkshire, UK.
Apart from reading, obviously, I enjoy gardening and spend a lot of time walking and trying to train my dog.
I'm fairly new to e-books and Goodreads but I'm enjoying the community on here.

Kat Khell | 1 comments Hello all!

My name is Kat and I live in NYC. Although i have been reading most of my life (36), i find that lately i have been reading more of what i call “soap opera” books, and I keep going to the same sort of places for inspiration so I only recently started using Goodreads as a way to broaden my horizons as it were.

I am very excited to join this group, from what I read this is a great assortment of folks with a huge diversity of interest so there will always plenty of interesting discussions!

My main interests in history is ancient history, medieval times, new discoveries in archeology, secrets i.e. spies, regular people lives are just a few topics off the top of my head.

I am also a huge fan of The Great Courses, I have listened to most of their history series and get a lot of book ideas from them.

I am currently tarring through https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Blood Royal: A True Tale of True Crime and Detection in Medieval Paris by Eric Jager. (I tried to read the thread of how to make the book pics, but every time i try the various links on how, my app crashes!) it is a book i am having a hard time putting down.

Apologies for the rant. Looking forward to discussing history with you!

A warm welcome Steve, from all of us in the History Book Club. We are happy that you have joined us from the United Kingdom.

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

The Last Lion Winston Spencer Churchill Visions of Glory 1874-1932 by William Manchester by William Manchester William Manchester

The following is an introduction from Karen that has been moved from another thread:

New member intro

So, I didn't see any other new member introductions on this thread, but probably I didn't scroll down far enough. I'm a major history buff, although my degree is in romance languages and my work experience is mostly finance. I've read history for pleasure since college and love discussing it. Currently I'm reading An Argument Open to All: Reading "The Federalist" in the 21st Century alongside the Federalist Papers, but am wondering if that discussion is active? I've calculated that the group should be at about #31 at this point, so I'm working to catch up.

I love books with a global perspective, and also love primary source documents. History is a mosaic - you can never see the whole thing, but I feel like the picture gets a little clearer with each book I finish.

Jack Dixon Hello. My name is Jack and I reside in Bakersfield, California. I am currently in school studying history to eventually become a history teacher for students in secondary education. I am only in my second year of studies and have a long way to go. Since my high school years were a couple decades ago, my knowledge of history has faded. Therefore, I am striving to absorb and refresh my memory as much as possible. I love a variety of historical categories, but my favorite is American History - specifically the plight of minorities and immigrants that came to our country for a better life, but sadly suffered exploitation and oppression from the greedy, rich, Anglo-Saxon. Also, the American colonial period is another period of interest, where many triumphs and trials are witnessed in our country's evolution. I love a good story, especially a true story of the past. This is just a tid bit on why I joined this group. Thank you!

Jim Yarin | 5 comments Hi,
I am a long-time genealogist living outside of Boston and recently became more interested in how history is told, to expand my knowledge of history and what makes it enjoyable to read vs. what makes it drudgery. I think I'd like to teach history. Some of my history interests are: Texas, Jewish, Circus, Civil War, historiography, 19C biography, local history, and epistolary (told through correspondence or other writings) history.

Most recently, in conjunction with more than 200 other readers, I read from "Of the Monstrous Pictures of Whales," from a whaling history, in a public reading in New Bedford, Mass. (true, some of it was definitely made up history).

I am now reading Curse of the Narrows The Halifax Explosion 1917 by Laura M. MacDonald by Laura M. MacDonald
I recently read Dead Wake The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson by Erik Larson .

My favorite type of history book is along the lines of The Professor and the Madman A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester by Simon Winchester and
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot by Rebecca Skloot

Jeff | 3 comments Hello,
I'm Jeff and I live in the Washington, DC area of the United States presently. I work as a foreign service officer, and have lived overseas for extended periods.

I am very interested in broad swathes of history, both US and international. Right now I am primarily focused on Eastern Europe in the immediate post-WW1 period, where new states were taking shape in the wake of the collapse of three empires there.

Additionally I am interested in the process of German unification in the 19th century. For American history, I am interested in colonial economic development under the plantation system, as well as the later struggles against Jim Crow and segregation.

I like learning languages, and am trying to teach myself German and Polish.

Best,
Jeff

If you have books that you would like to add to our existing threads that deal with international world history or US history - we would welcome your adds. Also any suggestions regarding Eastern Europe and the immediate post-WW1 period would be interesting too.

We have an active Civil Rights folder which may be of interest to you too.

I can’t say that I know much about history (was always more of a math/science person), but I would like to learn more, especially through the reading of memoirs, autobiographies, and historical fiction.
After reading “A River in Darkness: One Man's Escape from North Korea”, I wanted to learn more about the history of that region. I also enjoy reading about politics and political and social movements.

I’ve been part of this group for some time, but have not actively participated in your reads. You have two books lined up for February: “Evicted” and “Becoming” that are on my To Read list and I plan to join you. Other Goodreads’ groups I participate in are Victorians, Classics and 18th/19th Century Lit.

So nice to meet you and I look forward to joining the discussion.

Bjarke Knudsen (cphbaki) | 2 comments Hello there. My name is Bjarke Knudsen, Copenhagen-born librarian currently residing in southern Sweden. I've always been quite a prolific reader, particularly history - as a pre-teen I read a multi-volume work on world history over the span of a summer holiday at my grandparents' place - and I actually find it relaxing to do research. To the point where my friends refer to me as "the walking encyclopedia"!

Welcome Bjarke to the History Book Club. Thank you for your interesting introduction and sharing your interests in history. We are happy that you have joined us from beautiful Sweden.

Bjarke, thank you for your comment. Your format is almost perfect. Just don't forget the author link after the photo.

Bjarke Knudsen (cphbaki) | 2 comments Thank you kindly!

Your citation guidelines make perfect sense - I didn't include links in my first posting, as I wasn't sure if the work in question was available for reference in the Goodreads database.

However, I managed to find it. I've only posted one link, as I figured 14 links might be a trifle overkill.

In any case, hope I got that right :)

Lara Maynard I'm Lara, 45, in Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. I have a general interest in history, with a particular interest in women's history (aka herstory), Newfoundland history, WWII (especially WWII women), folklore, and historic sites including cemeteries. Historical fiction is my favourite genre, but I also read nonfiction.

Alison S ☯️ (alison1965) Hi everyone. I only joined the group recently. I live in the UK and until very recently mainly read fiction. However, in the last couple of years I have started reading more non-fiction, especially true crime and narrative non-fiction. This is why I have joined this group. I also studied English, History and Archaeology at university so I have a longstanding fascination with the past. Favourite non-fiction authors include Helen Garner and Richard Lloyd Parry.

Anita | 0 comments Hi everyone! My name is Anita and I'm a 24 year old from Sweden who just joined the group and I'm pretty excited. I haven't been reading a lot of history books but I'm looking forward to get some inspiration here. My areas of interests are pretty specific: Russia, Ukraine and Chechnya. So anything related to this will probably end up on my to-read-list.

If any of you have similar interests, feel free to add me on here!

Currently looking forward to this book:

Jamie (wonderwaugh79) Hi I’m Jamie! I’m a Dental Hygienist, wife, mother of 2 and a school library volunteer. My mom use to take my sister and I to the public library every day of summer break and that’s where I got hooked on reading! My husband has a degree in history so we are always discussing historical fiction/non fiction novels. His expertise is in the Civil War era so we tend to read more on that topic. I look forward to learning about and interacting more with the group! Thanks for allowing me to join.
