Welcome Kayleigh, from all of us at the History Book Club. We are happy that you joined us. Thank you for your interesting introduction. You will find many and varied book discussions here.

Based on your areas of interest, you may want to explore the following:

European History
British History
American History

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how books you mention should look:
Becoming by Michelle Obama by Michelle Obama Michelle Obama

William Whalen | 284 comments Hello.

I am Bill and that Is Cunneda pictured with me (my Welsh Cardigan Corgi and reading partner) who is named for a 5th century Welsh King. I reside in Michigan but the Army moved me all over the U.S. I am a voracious reader with a very strong love of history. Two of my favorite topics are the Tudors and the U.S. Civil War. I am currently working my way chronologically through biographies of the Roman Emperors (Emperor Commodus is next), English Monarchs (just started Edward III) and the U.S Presidents (Ulysses S. Grant is next.) I read both histories and biographies but lean towards the biography. I also love alternative history. I have never been in a book club before and this seemed the most appropriate for me to join.

Thank you for the advice. I have gone the British Monarchy and the Tudor Lovers Group. I will see if I can accurately post. You were accurate on the Roman Emperor Book. But I am reading Ormrod's Edward III and SImpson and Calhoun for Grant.

Victoria Collins | 1 comments Hi all, I'm Victoria Collins, in Canberra, Australia. I love history books generally, and my special interests are indigenous histories, ancient civilisations, and biblical history. I've been lucky enough to travel to some incredible ancient and biblical sites which have fueled my fascination greatly. All that said, I'm also very interested in current global issues and historical events, which seem to abound of late, and the impact these have on our present and future, particularly the human relationship with the natural world. Am very much looking forward to group discussions, and meeting some of you online!

Derek Cunningham | 2 comments HI! My name is Derek Cunningham. I became interested in history after I realized I hadn't been taught the really interesting parts in school.

After traveling around Asia for 10 years I started to see unexpected links between various cultures, and that made me curious about the ancient world. Since then I have been lucky to meet numerous custodians of ancient knowledge and to learn from them the ways of ancient cultures. I am an avid reader of ancient texts, and books on early European, and Asian history. Also, because I love researching history.... I am now the Historian for Clan Cunningham.

William Whalen | 284 comments Welcome TO HBC Victoria and Derek,
I also joined this week. And Derek, I suspect that you are preaching to the choir here. Schools do a wonderful job of turning students off history. Most people you talk to seem to think that history is boring and cannot understand why you could possibly enjoy it. But their experience is teachers forcing them to remember dates to events that they are not able to relate to. Then I start talking to them about Henry VIII and his six wives. We're talking tabloid type material. And they start to see that once you get past the dry dates, history can actually be pretty interesting.

Deb | 1 comments Hi, I hope I am posting this in the correct place. My name is Deb. I studied Medieval History as an undergraduate and graduate student at Binghamton University before obtaining an MS in Information Science from Syracuse University. I later completed a two-year certificate program in Leadership from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. Due to a round of bad health, I retired as Director of Research and Learning Services from Cornell University and I now teach a six-month online certificate series in leadership and management for a library-based educational company based in California.

I reside in upstate New York, but I also spend a lot of time in Canada and travel to London whenever possible.

While English history is my primary focus (I am currently developing a course on the History of London for an adult educational program), my interest in history is far-reaching and includes Roman History, as well as other subject areas and time periods. While I go to London fairly regularly, I have also traveled throughout Europe and always seek out historical information wherever I travel.

One of my best friends is a former grad school housemate from Germany whom I have visited in Germany a few times. That, coupled with the current global climate, makes this month’s read on Angela Merkel very interesting to me.

I look forward to reading with, and learning from, all of you!

P.S. I am notoriously bad at proofreading when typing on my phone, so I apologize for any typos!

Thom DeLair | 2 comments Hi. I recently joined this group page as a way to meet more people who enjoy reading history. I'm from Pennsylvania, USA, and primarily interested in economic and social history.

I am interested in how societies transform and change over generations. Because I only speak English, many of the books I've read recently pertain to English speaking institutions and cultures, but when the chance arises, I also like learning about different places and cultures.

I've been taking my time to learn about different time periods. The past couple of years I have learned a lot about colonial American history and the revolutionary period. I'm interested in US history from a more global perspective.

A really nerdy thing I like doing is comparing different books with vaguely similar topics. The past year I spent some time comparing the following four books and how they relate to the development of English speaking institutions.

The Long Process of Development: Building Markets and States in Pre-industrial England, Spain and their Colonies

Making Money: Coin, Currency, and the Coming of Capitalism

The British Industrial Revolution in Global Perspective

Against the Profit Motive: The Salary Revolution in American Government, 1780-1940

Enough about me. Hope to learn more about what other people are reading in the history world and maybe meet some people with shared interests.

Kimberly Simon | 3 comments Liz! I'm in Petoskey and am studying the early American age right now (Pre revolution and Revolution through Jefferson) and looking for more books from authors with Native American perspective and not European descent authors writing from their perspective. If you come across anything you really like about Michigan or other let me know!

message 3282: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Simon | 3 comments Kimberly from Petoskey, Michigan...I've got 2 reading challenges for myself that are intersecting. A great list of 1000 books to read before you die and American History.

I started with 1776, Washington's Immortals, The Summer of 1787, Washington A Life, The Federalist and Anti- Federalist Papers, John Adams, American Nations: A History of Eleven Rival Regions and Cultures, Benjamin Franklin:An American Life (Threw in Last of the Mohicans from my top 1000 list) and now I'm on to Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power.

I would like to read more from the Native American perspective during this time period but am not sure what to read that doesn't have a biased European slant.
I'm also considering "West of the Revolution: An Uncommon History of 1776" , "The French and Indian War: Conquest of New France" and "America the epic Story of North American 1493-1898".

I would be interested in opinions on those 3 books. I also would like suggestions for any other books that you think would best or better fill in the early American story in its full scope. I'm open to fiction or non fiction suggestions or what you consider are the best books of that time period that should be on the 1000 book list.

Thanks in advance!

Washington A Life by Ron Chernow by Ron Chernow Ron Chernow

Charles Grapski (cgrapski) | 1 comments My name is Charlie. I am a Legal and Political Theorist and Historian by academic focus and training (although my studies are both deep and broad and non-disciplinary ... I read/study many areas/topics. But my formal education at the Bachelors Level were in Microbiology, Philosophy, History and Political Science. At the Masters Level I did MAs in Political Science and in Legal and Political Theory as well as an LLM (Master of Laws) in Legal History & Jurisprudence. My Post-Graduate studies being split between the US & England. From these I pursued two doctorates: one in law and one in politics.

My main interest is in democracy including what it is, how we get it, how we lost it, and why we should care. In all of my studies, however, I consciously approach them from a foundation in readings in Philosophy and History upon which I base both my further studies/readings but develop my thoughts and theories.

Unfortunately I have not taught in a number of years (the best education is teaching) and am currently a full-time caregiver to my father who suffered a spinal cord injury.

I am hoping that the forums, which I have only just started to explore here, will provide a place to engage in discussion on books and topics/areas of books. Sadly in the early days of the internet, before even the Web, I knew of and was involved in a lot of discussion boards ... but ironically found more when there was so much less on the internet than today.
