Nicholas | 33 comments This isn't really my favorite book to movie per se (far from it), but I did enjoy the first two Hobbit films. Personally, I find that there is way too much CG in The Hobbit that drives me crazy, it may not bother others, but it does me. I liked The Desolation of Smaug more than I did An Unexpected Journey–Cumberbatch did a great job as Smaug and I always love seeing Gandalf, though, for me, I thought Bilbo didn't get sufficient screen time until his coming encounter with Smaug and I really didn't like that river barrel escape scene.

So, at the question at hand, what do you guys think about the first two Hobbit films? And what are you looking forward to in There And Back Again?

David Estes (davidestesbooks) LOTR and Hobbit books are some of my faves! I LOVED the Lord of the Rings movies, so I was super excited about these. I've only seen the first Hobbit movie and although I liked it, it wasn't nearly as good as the LOTR movies. I'm just trying to disconnect them from the books, I think I'll enjoy them more that way. Good to hear the second one is better than the first!

Jim Vuksic I happen to agree with David's premise of creating a disconnect between the book and movie versions. In fact, I do this with every book-to-movie scenario, regardless of genre.

A reader creates a mental image of each character featured in whatever story they may happen to be enjoying. Each reader's concept is unique; so the characters' portrayal on the big screen seldom coincides with the original image created by the reader.

That's okay though. Differing concepts, ideas, and opinions are what makes life in general interesting and enjoyable.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 92 comments From the answers I see here, I'd say more men liked the Hobbit than women. :p

I loved the book, and I was happy to watch the movie. (YES, movie without the S) because when I went to the theater, I had completely forgotten that it was 'to be continued'. I loved the movie although my first reaction was that they were not far enough to end it, and it was already nearly 3 hours in. I only remembered when it ended in the middle of something.
Personally, I think the hobbit should have been made in one movie, not 3. I understand LOTR since there were 3 books (and the movies all had their own ending), but the hobbit was a short and easy read.

Anyway, I still went to see the sequel, but since I knew already it would end with a cliffhanger of some sort, it kind of blew it for me. I found myself snoring in the middle of the sequel. (Well, I don't actually think I was snoring because my head was on the hubby's shoulder and he would have noticed I was 'gone' and he didn't, but still.)

Will I go see the third? I don't think so, unless my husband wants to, but from his reaction to the sequel, I doubt we will. Netflix will solve that problem for us. :/

Nicholas | 33 comments I'll undoubtedly see the third one in theaters, but whether they should have made The Hobbit into one film and not three is a valid argument, though I don't personally care either way. More Middle–earth is fine with me, I just wish I enjoyed The Hobbit movies as much as I did LOTR's. Maybe the third one will be the best, and possibly up to par with the War of the Ring trilogy, but I don't have soaring heights that it will be–it's just wishful thinking. I do wonder if they'll make a movie about The Silmarillion though.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) Ha! Yeah, I'm the same way, MORE Middle Earth gets me all excited, so if they can stretch them into 10 movies, go for it!
