I just went back and re-read my review of this, which I wrote in 2009 (regarding the free ebook copy). Although the book does feel less polished than some of his later stuff, it was still engrossing. I pointed out in my review that although the "ancestors" don't show up until about 2/3 of the way through the story, the web of plot, characters, and setting that Sigler created played out beautifully at the end, and made the book that much more enjoyable for me.
Back then I compared Scott Sigler as a cross between Stephen King and Michael Crichton. Most of his more recent work is less science-based and more soft-science-fiction, where I think his strengths really lie. Sigler has the ability to create some really unforgettable characters (this book excepted), which I really enjoy.
