colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm currently reading Secondhand Souls. It's a bit disappointing, especially since A Dirty Job was one of my first Moore books, and still one of my faves, and I was excited for this sequel but it's just not really working for me.

Christine (inhalesbookslikepopcorn) I'm rereading Michael Ende's The Neverending Story The last time I read this was as child, then watching the movies, I forgot quite a bit but I really like it

message 3: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes I haven't decided what is next. I picked up The Final Formula by Becca Andre for free at amazon.ca. I'm shocked that BookBub found something of remote interest and was actually available in Canada. That might be next or something else. I'm not enamored of starting a new series so maybe it will be back to Discworld to try to finish that off. I think I've requested Interesting Times three times from my library but I keep going on holiday or getting sick and not being able to pick it up. Silly library doesn't have that one as an eBook yet.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Me and hubby decided to do a full Discworld reread next year. We're debating about whether to try and do 2 or 3 a month. I'm thinking 2, so I don't get burned out and can fit in enough other stuff, but then it'll nearly 2 years to get through.

message 5: by HomeInMyShoes (last edited Oct 01, 2015 01:11PM) (new)

HomeInMyShoes I read three or four a year on average. One a quarter seems pretty reasonable, but that means a good twelve years to get through the series.

message 6: by Craig (new)

Craig So I'm in the midst of A Duty To The Dead and All the King's Men for some book clubs. I'm also in the midst of two serialized works: The Two of Swords by K J Parker (which I have mentioned before) and Badge, Book, and Candle. This last is properly titled Bookburners with the main writer being Max Gladstone. The fourth episode came out this week (arriving weekly). You can get more info at serialbox.com.

I don't have that kind of patience. LOL

It's actually been really good. I've got other things interesting me and anytime I hit a lull in my interest I just pick up Discworld. Its a great series because you don't have to remember much of anything previous to enjoy the next book. There's no cliffhanger from a previous book to force you into the next. Best series ever.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Hello Everyone! I've missed you!

I have recently started The Aeronaut's Windlass!
So far, so good.

The Aeronaut's Windlass (The Cinder Spires, #1) by Jim Butcher

message 10: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth (dotdots) | 9 comments Started Way of Kings today. So far I am liking it. :)

Just finished Thief's Magic by Trudi Canavan. Liked it. Waiting for book #2.

I'm going to restart this this weekend. Haven't had a chance to read in 3 days and I've kind of lost the thread. I expect to be able to find my way back in place easy enough. Just need some uninterrupted time!

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm supposed to be reading A Matter of Magic - but of course it's time to go back to the library...

O_O

message 14: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'm STILL reading The Dinosaur Lords! It's been a month and I'm still a couple of hundred pages from the ending. FFS, it's not even a huge book.

message 15: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Then of course, Goodreads is going to send me an October newsletter to cheer me up. First thing I see:

You started reading
Dune

message 16: by Sinistmer (new)

Sinistmer | 212 comments Just finished MARY: The Summoning. Nice ghost story--I have the sequel on hold.

I'm also currently reading Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning; it's not a sci-fi/fantasy, but it's quite fascinating (and scary).

Ooh, I like this series. Not sure if it'll be your cuppa, but it was a nice little read.

I prefer the second book to the first, though. You might, too, since the second is a bit more romancey.

message 18: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Looking forward to reading MARY: The Summoning once I finally get through Daughter of Hounds.

I know those feels. I avoid those emails, lol.

message 20: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 69 comments I'm still on Three Kingdoms: Classic Novel in Four Volumes and Words of Radiance. Fairly sure I'll finish Words of Radiance this month, though Three Kingdoms will take me perhaps until the end of the year.

message 21: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Started MARY the other day. Good opening. It's one of the few YA books I've read which, to me, really seems like it's a bunch of teenage girls...

Which is both good and bad. Because teenage girls are annoying, yo.

So true.

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments I'm reading The Hollow Boy (Lockwood & Co., #3), a suitable book for Halloween. I'm enjoying it very much!

Cool. I read the first in that series, but didn't think of the sequel for a Halloween book. Might have to pick it up now.

message 26: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm going to Universal next week so, in preparation, I have started rereading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

message 27: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I caught up with the Dresden short stories (up to Blood Rites) and then finished up Blood Rites last night. I want to move on to the next book, but I have The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for library book club next.

message 28: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Jackie, I'll read Huck Finn with you. Just need to get home from Texas and load it to my Nook.

message 29: by Sinistmer (new)

Sinistmer | 212 comments I'm reading The Heart Goes Last; it's really gripping so far. Margaret Atwood is hit or miss with me.

Jackie (thenightowl) Chris wrote: "Jackie, I'll read Huck Finn with you. Just need to get home from Texas and load it to my Nook."

Awesome :) Buddy Read! Have you read Tom Sawyer?

I'm familiar with the stories, but haven't actually read them. The librarians from book club said I should read Tom Sawyer first, but I'm not going to have time for all that. I might read it after though.

While Huck Finn works best if you've read Tom Sawyer first, you can totally read them separately. Huck Finn is a slightly different person in TS than his own book. I read Huck Finn first so I never had the TS crazies that most people do. I can take or leave TS.

message 32: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Thanks, MrsJ. That's good to know. My bookish OCD keeps going off, but I really don't have time this week to read both books. lol

message 33: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I think I read TS when I was a kid. Not sure if it was the full version. Or an illustrated kid version.

Book 3 is the best in the series; you NEED to read it. I loved it so much, it's a bit unhealthy! ;)

message 38: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 18 comments Just finished The Name of the Wind and now reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Based on Sinister's comment I just put a hold on The Young Elites.

message 39: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I finished 'Goblet of Fire' last night, but am putting aside my HP reread for a time to read some Halloween reads, so I started The Fall this morning. So far it's pretty evocative.

Yay! Let me know what you think.

I really liked Ocean at the End of the Lane. What do you think so far?

message 41: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 18 comments Regarding Ocean at the End of the Lane... I am half way through at this point. It isn't what I was expecting. At first I didn't think I was going to like it but now had a really hard time putting it down after lunch. Can't wait until I can pick back up tonight.
