I live in Scotland with my husband and have a son and 2 grandchildren - the eldest of whom is at University. I am retired from a career in Education and Training and wondering how I ever had time to work! I Love Ms Heyer's crime mysteries as well as her historicals of course - but I also love Agatha Christie's entire works! (did anyone see the new version of "And then there were none" on BBC over Christmas?
Also, I like Dorothy L Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, Raymond Chandler, Kerry Greenwood and Josephine Tey. Plus - Nicola Upson's books about Josephine Tey are a splendid re-creation of the era. I like Alan Hunter's George Gently series too.
Susan, welcome - that's a great selection of favourite authors. I'm yet to read any of Heyer's mysteries, but have enjoyed the other books by her I've read and am looking forward to our group read of Death in the Stocks next month.
We have a 'favourite authors' thread about Agatha Christie where we've had some discussion of the new TV version of And Then There Were None.

I've seen some of the George Gently TV programmes but haven't read the books yet - I really ought to, since I know the original books were set in East Anglia, which is my part of the world.

Welcome Susan! Nice to have so many Georgette Heyer fans here, especially as we are featuring her next month.

I am also a member of the new Emma Watson book club here at good reads
But my real love is crime detective books I am now looking forward to the challenge
Regards
Marion

Welcome Marion
That real life book club sounds awesome!
I had a look at the Emma Watson Club but it is already so huge!
Welcome, Marion. The real-life classic crime book club at Waterstones in London sounds excellent. Glad to hear you are joining in the Sayers challenge!

I have a full collection of Wimsey books, so I'm looking forward to joining in with the Sayers challenge.

Welcome to Marion and Susan B. Susan I am a huge Beatles fan and Elvis Costello certainly has some history with them (Paul in particular) - I also like his music very much.

Me too, for all of these! And not only because Elvis C did Watching the Detectives...

I'm currently working my way through the Ngaio Marsh series (on #7). I do plan to jump into this group's Dorothy Sayers reading challenge with the next book. I devoured all her books as a teenager, and actually read Whose Body several months ago, intending to reread them again, but got sidetracked by the charming Alleyn.
So excited to be here!

I'm also working my way through Marsh but I'm only on #3 The Nursing Home Murder.

@Jan - I remember thinking that The Nursing Home Murder was a good one!
Welcome, Martha! Great that you chose our group for your first book club, and that you are going to join in the Sayers challenge.
I read a lot of Alleyn mysteries a long time ago and recently revisited Tied Up In Tinselover Christmas, which has left me wanting to read more of them again.

Welcome Martha! I love Ngaio Marsh too.

I mostly read British mysteries, especially golden age/1920s. Ngaio Marsh is my favorite ("A May Lay Dead" and "Light Thickens") but I'm also a big fan of Christie, Sayers, Allingham and Tey. Used to read a lot of Anne Perry but sometimes the murders are a bit too gruesome for my taste.
I'm going to catch up on the Sayers challenge and funnily enough I just read Black Plumes.
Welcome to the group, Faith. The Sayers challenge will remain open, so please feel free to join in as you wish.

I love the puzzle aspect of the golden age detective stories; I love how the clues all fit together to point to one and only one solution. I've read that the original Detection Club members actually considered the artform more of a game than literature, and I just wanna play...!
Welcome, Faith - great that you are joining in on the Sayers challenge, and also that you have just read Black Plumes. It will be good to have your thoughts on that one!
Chris, welcome. I also love the puzzle aspect, although I'm not always particularly good at solving the puzzles!

A fellow Northwesterner, a fellow tea-drinker, and a fellow Allingham/Sayers/Tey (and I hope also Marsh?) lover.
Are you sure we aren't twins separated at birth???
San Juan Islands here, but near enough Seattle to share windstorms with!
If Lord Peter were in London today, he would be tucked up in his library with Bunter bringing warming drinks. Cold, windy and, of course, raining here...

That was our last night. Lashings of rain, howling wind, we had the fire on and tucked ourselves up in our chairs with books and sat it out. Sadly, no Bunter to bring us hot drinks, so I had to make my own. But otherwise, very much as you said.

Thanks for letting us know, Simone :)
Everyman - I think readers secretly like rainy days, don't you?

Just looked at the weather for the week (in south-west England) -- if we do, we're going to be very happy this week!

I'm new to this group as well.
I have read most of the books by Agatha Christie back when I was in the early teens. Nowadays, I read detective stories, mysteries, and thrillers. I have read a few books by Dorothy Sayers but I also read books by Chris Carter, George Simmenon, Anna Grue, Sue Grafton, and a lot of other interesting authors.

Thanks Susan. I'm looking forward to seeing what you all read and get some inspiration.

Thanks Judy.
I have a huge list of authors I like. Whenever I have read a book, I like, the author is put on a list with interesting authors. When I go to the library, I pick a few books from the those authors. When trying new authors, I mainly read the books as e-books because then I don't have to carry the books to the library within a few days, if I don't like the book.
If you find any books/authors you like, Gitte, please do post on the, "What mysteries are you reading at the moment?" thread. It's a great way to get recommendations.

Welcome, Alex - I love Chandler too, but haven't read any Crumley and also haven't read any John Dickson Carr yet, though I definitely intend to do so soon. Congratulations on the novel you didn't mention.

Well, since I'm also a gardener, I go for sunny days and rainy evenings.

Thanks, Judy. I'm nothing if not discreet.

As a reader and gardener I go for this combo -- I love reading outside in the summer!

Always glad to greet another John Dickson Carr fan. I also like Sayers, Christie, Allingham and Marsh.
Welcome, Carrie! Glad you found us and that you are joining in on the Sayers challenge.
Great selection of favourite authors - I will try Dickson Carr very soon.

I don't know Leo Bruce. Which would you recommend to a new reader?
