Happy Listening!

Randy | 103 comments This is a weird one so far. I'm really into it though... I am about 20% into it and I'm still wondering why there is a female narrator though. So far it seems like it could've been much better read by a man...

i participated in a buddy read for this book, so i read it not listened but yeah, a male narrator would make sense. it is a weird one! but i liked it.

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments Just started this one today. Intrigued so far...

Randy | 103 comments Ok, it is just me, or is this audio book hard to follow? Im about 50% into it and I liked the beginning segment, as well as the weird adventure in Mexico following, but after that it's been a few hours of jumping around to all sorts of situations and it's really losing me. Does anyone else feel the same???

Latasha (latasha513) | 11980 comments Mod
I read it but didn't have any problems. sorry :(

Randy | 103 comments lol maybe I should stop listening in 10 min spurts

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments I guess I haven't gotten far enough, because once it got to the retired couple, it has stayed there. I'm still not quite sure how the front matter ties in yet, but I'm assuming I'll learn that. I am beginning to think I'd have been better off reading this one, because I just can't devote the same level of attention to audiobooks as I can regular books, since I listen while driving and working out, and this one seems like one that I'm going to want to pay close attention to. I definitely haven't lost interest, and plan to stick with it.

My copy is lendable if anyone decides to read it instead of listen.

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments OK, Randy, I am starting to see what you mean now. Even though it stays with the couple, it is bouncing around on the timeline. Still hasn't lost my interest, and I'm assuming there's a reason for it, but hopefully it'll become clear soon. :-) I've heard a lot of good things about the author, and this book in particular, but I think this may be the first of his works I have read.

Ya, from about hour 2-5 it sticks with the couple buy bounces through timelines and situations rapidly. I'm at hour 7 now and it's started to come together again. I'm still into it, I think between the narrative moving around and my lack of paying close attention, I started to lose it a bit. Interesting though. I really hope the climax delivers because it's starting to build and get pretty unnerving.

Randy | 103 comments nope, didn't like this one lol. I actually stopped listening with only 30 mins remaining. I still have no idea why there is a female narrator, the whole story seemed extremely disjointed, I just stopped caring. Oh well, they can't all be winners...

Wow, sorry to hear that. :-( Man, it really must have been hopeless for you to give up with only 30 minutes left. I'm continuing for now, because I haven't gotten to the point of not caring. I still don't really see signs of it coming together yet. I didn't get much time at all this weekend, so I'm more or less where I was last week, around halfway through. The female narrator doesn't bother me (though I also don't see a reason for the choice), but the recording seems a bit muffled to me, which makes her more difficult to understand at times.

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments Anyone else listening besides Randy and me?

Latasha (latasha513) | 11980 comments Mod
I'm not, I read it a while back, though.

I'd like to know your take on it as you progress. Keep me posted!

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments I'm at around 8 hours now, and I'll admit I'm intrigued by what they have found on the campout and the things that have been revealed.

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments OK, I LOVED the ending of this - Randy, I have to wonder if things really took off right about the time you stopped listening.

This was probably not a good book to do in audio, and it was a difficult book to review, because I felt like it was a great idea scraped a little too thin in the middle. I thought the writing was great, and in theory I enjoy books that have a slow build of tension while revealing bits of the story at a time, but I just feel like that went on a bit long here. That could easily be because I listened to it in small doses - had I been reading it I might not have noticed as much.

I'm very anxious to read some of Barron's short work, which I have heard raves about. The guy can definitely write!

I think I have one of his anthologies that's lendable. The imago sequence? Something like that anyways...

Thanks, Latasha. I've managed to pick up a couple for a dollar or 2 when they've gone on sale on Amazon. Just haven't managed to read them yet. So many books, so little free time... :-)
