Lanelle | 4026 comments report books that you have read to our team's REPORTING THREAD

Lynn asks:
- Once you've completed a book please report in the reporting thread. Ideally including the link to the book, but if that's not possible please include the author alongside the title.

- Please use a separate post for each book read.

- Please keep chat on this thread to a minimum (helps me keep track of the books and points more easily).

Welcome to the team, Anne. Is there something that you'd like to do? The captain spot is open :)

I have some Z and Q books, too. Just one X book though.

Sam F | 246 comments Hi - I have one that starts with a Q too! Being my first time, I'm not exactly certain how this goes, but I'm happy to be a cheerleader :)

Yay, Esther. Any thoughts as to a team name?

Lanelle | 4026 comments Sam wrote: "Hi - I have one that starts with a Q too! Being my first time, I'm not exactly certain how this goes, but I'm happy to be a cheerleader :)"

Cheerleaders are more important than most people realize. My first two team topplers had dedicated cheerleaders and my third team toppler did not. The difference was amazing!

Thanks, Sam. I'll put you down as a cheerleader. Unless you want to be captain. The slot is still open :)

message 14: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 246 comments Great - cheerleader it is! The team name you have sounds good.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Lanelle, reporting for duty as captain. My 1st as Captain in doing Topplers. I do the reporting, right? And I can cheer.

message 17: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4026 comments Thanks, Anne. I think you do the reporting and assigning tasks and stuff like that. I would suggest taking cues from other team captains.

I kind of like the idea of doing the final Scrabble board, but I'm worried that my lack of computer skills might hamper me. But my kids could help me with it, I suppose. Maybe someone who is more confident will volunteer.

Since I was the one that posted the first 4 messages, let me know if there's anything you'd like me to put there.

message 18: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I used a 10 x 10 grid for my example, but please use a 15 x 15 board/grid for part 2. After Part 2 is completed I'm going to have the fruit machine pick some squares for the bonus points, so the boards need to be the same size.

Liz (lizvegas) | 504 comments Hi all! I'm happy to help out with the final board. Lanelle, maybe we can work together? Scrabble is my jam!

Will do, Lanelle. I'll message you. The grid would be helpful.

message 22: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 947 comments Hi all! I'm happy to participate in my first toppler! I already found 8 Q and Z books, I hope I can read 4 or 5 of them

message 23: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 947 comments oh and I'm not sure what a cheerleader is supposed to do but I can try!

message 24: by Teanka (new)

Teanka Hi, I'm happy to be part of this team! I have 1 Z title and 1 J title so far, working on finding more. I'd like to read 4-5 books, but probably not all of them will start with the highest ranking letter, I might do some 3-4 points ones too.

message 25: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Oct 05, 2015 04:18AM) (new)

Jayme | 4533 comments Glad to be part of the team. I have a Z book on reserve at the library and 2 V books laying around the house. I can commit to reading 2 books for sure hoping for 3. I can be a cheerleader, but not sure what they do ??

message 26: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4026 comments Welcome to Team 2, Ariane. I hope this toppler will be a good experience for you. I remember my first toppler; it was a lot more complicated than this one.

I'll put you down as a cheerleader. I'm sure you'll think of ways to keep a sense of fun and excitement for our team. Feel free to see what other team's cheerleaders are doing.

Hey, Teanka. Welcome to Team 2. We're still looking for team name suggestions.

I was wondering how difficult part II of this challenge would be if everyone read Q and Z books. It might be a bit easier to put the titles on a Scrabble board if a few people read some 3-4 point books. I don't know.

We're happy to have you on our team, Jayme. The more cheerleaders, the better. Keeping up team enthusiasm for a whole week can be hard. Are you any good with those cute little emoticons?

Agreed and after seeing quite a few of you had the Z and Q books covered have made the decision to just read normal letter books :)

You'll get about 7 to 10 books from me.

message 30: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) | 504 comments Lanelle, I wouldn't worry too much about connecting a lot of Z and Q words. We will be able to connect them, by those letters most certainly, and if not that way, then by linking their vowels. The word "za" would be harder to link, but the word "Queen" has lots of options for linking. My guess is most of our first words will have enough vowels for us to link.
Hope that makes sense.

Ariane | 947 comments So as I have mentionned somewhere else, I was planning on reading some books in French, would it be a problem?

Lanelle | 4026 comments Liz wrote: "Lanelle, I wouldn't worry too much about connecting a lot of Z and Q words. We will be able to connect them, by those letters most certainly, and if not that way, then by linking their vowels...."

You're right. Just me worrying. But I think I'll avoid 4 letter titles and read 3 letters titles (like Zoe and Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My!) that will fit anywhere easily or longer letter titles that will be easier to work with.

I plan on reading 8 - 10 books. My short list:
Zombie Princess Apocalypse - 19 points
Zoe - 12 points
Zora and Me - 13 points (a quick read, save for last))
Zero to Hero - 13 points (a quick read, save for last)
Zoned for Murder - 15 points
Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My! - 10 points
The Quiet Professor - 14 points
Queen Lucia - 14 points
Quotable - 17 points
Kismet - 12 points
Keeping Secrets - 14 points
The Jewelled Snuff Box - 20 points

I remember you asking about the French books on another thread. Of course its no problem.

message 34: by Annette (new)

Annette Olsen | 205 comments Hello Team! I am a bit late but excited to participate. I can do 5 books for sure and maybe 6 or 7.. depending on how things go. I'll start gophering. Let me know if there's any particular letter we need.

message 35: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4026 comments Welcome to the team, Annette. I've already added your name to the roster.

Of course, for part one, Z, Q, X, J and K are the highest scoring letters for titles.

For part two, I'm not sure as to the strategy. I'm going to focus on longer words. But I might be wrong. Hopefully other team members will share what they plan on doing.

Esther (nyctale) | 5195 comments Ariane wrote: "So as I have mentionned somewhere else, I was planning on reading some books in French, would it be a problem?"

There will be 2 of us. I will probably look at titles at my local library that is 99% French.

message 37: by Liz (last edited Oct 05, 2015 10:52AM) (new)

Liz (lizvegas) | 504 comments I am going to commit to only two books this time around.
I will be reading :
Queen of Someday
and Kick Push
I'm not going to worry about a strategy for Part 2. I think we will be able to fit a lot of words in. However, I see we already have several super readers who are reading a lot of books. If as a team we end up reading a TON of books, we may not be able to fit all the words in (since it's only 15 by 15 grid), but at that point we would just use the highest scoring words that would fit.

message 38: by Teanka (new)

Teanka I might add a 'Z' title in Polish, too.

message 45: by Lanelle (new)

By the way, welcome to the team !

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments Thanks Lanelle (and I'm going to screenshot that comment to remind you of once all the chaos and confusion starts lol)!

message 47: by Annette (new)

Annette Olsen | 205 comments Question... If the title of the book begins with the word "the" then "the" counts as the first word. Correct?

message 48: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments Annette wrote: "Question... If the title of the book begins with the word "the" then "the" counts as the first word. Correct?"

I understood it to be the opposite and to not count, we don't usually count them. I could be wrong though...

message 49: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments In Jmom's words

Read anything you want. Using the first letter of the first word of the title (excluding The, A, and An) will determine how many points your book is worth.

*grin* I'm okay with saying that because it's Lynn that's our team recorder. She'll get the headache (bless her heart).
