Richard Diamond One of my favorite authors about one of my favorite Presidents. I got the book for that two reasons but specifically because I had been doing some intensive reading about the end of WWII in Asia and wanted to see how Truman and his aides saw the struggle to drop the bomb.
As most of McCullough's books (I haven't read all), it is a gripping story. The research is beyond excellent and some of the documents are "first time" publications. The background history of Truman lends an understanding to the man. I know of nothing that is left out and some things related deepens my understanding of the politics of the time. The relationship with Eisenhower over a period of eight years is fascinating. Well written. A fast read. Good reference book with regard to the politics of 1930-1960. McCullough's description of FDR relative to Truman is fascinating and DOES give still a view of FDR as a person and President. Not pretty but not surprising.

Patricia This is one of the best biographies I have read. Truman had to make some very big decisions that changed the course of history.

Kevin Great biography. Truman was a brilliant leader. He faced decisions that IMO many of the Presidents we've had since then couldn't handle. Bill Clinton's tenure was Candyland compared to Trumans.

LINDA The beauty of Truman by David McCullough is coming to understand how an uneducated man from Missouri worked tirelessly to educate himself to be able to make decisions in the best interest of the country. His remarkable rise from local politician to Missouri Senator, to Vice President to President of the United States is a wonderful story. Truman's respect for the role of President and his commitment to doing the right thing, regardless of political consequences makes him a patriot of the highest order. The reader comes away with respect for Truman as a man and as a Commander-In-Chief.

Patricia You are so right, Linda. I have often thought of the great men and women who will never be President because of the viciousness of today's press and misuse of the internet. I can remember the Washington elite snobbishly referring to Truman as just a haberdasher without an Ivy League degree. Turns out he was a better man than any of his critics.

Just after finishing Truman, I happened upon Bess W Truman, by Margaret Truman. It was very helpful to read that to fill in the questions surrounding Bess that were not addressed in the Truman biography.
