Nadine | 23 comments I'd like to read a book about shapeshifters, without any vampires in story. It could be about werewolves, although I'd like to get away from the whole dominance /alpha dig.
A little bit of romance is nice, but I don't want it to be the focus of the story.
Know any books like that?

Tammy ~Witching Hour Reads~ (03tammy-lynn) This was a great read with shapeshifters no vamps. The Shapeshifters The Kiesha'ra of the Den of Shadows (The Kiesha'ra, #1-5) by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 433 comments Shelly Laurenston is one of my favorite authors when it comes to shapeshifters. She knows how to do it all, delivering tales that are wickedly funny, action-packed, and scorch-your-fingers sexy. She wrote a great PNR series that features nothing but predatory animal shifters of all different sorts. The first book is The Mane Event.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) There's a werecat series with a female lead, she is a little overbearing at first but settles down. It's a pretty good series, six books - Stray is the first in the series

Honestly, if I went by the cover, I would probably avoid the book :-). But your description, especially the "wickedly funny" makes it interesting. I'll give it a try, thanks!

I like a well written YA, and this one seems interesting. Thanks for the warning. Strangely enough, english language doesn't bother me has much has swearing in my native language, so I should be fine. Is it's just threats of rape, also. Thanks for your recommendation.

Wow, the reviews seems to be all or nothing on that one. But Faythe seems like an interesting characters, I'll give it a try. Thank you very much!

Victoria Gaile (victoriagaile) | 15 comments Sharon Shinn has a good series on shapeshifters; The Shape of Desire (which I found a little creepy, actually), Still Life with Shapeshifter (which I haven't read), and The Turning Season (which I really liked).

Carolyn (seeford) | 62 comments I enjoyed the Sharon Shinn series too, but I would also recommend the Chronicles of the Cheysuli series by Jennifer Roberson. This is a true fantasy series (no quests or anything like that), but not any kind of PNR at all.

Another series, much heavier on the romance, is the Drakon series by Shana Abe.

Peter Meilinger | 469 comments Camouflage by Joe Haldeman is set in the near future, and the main character is an alien shape-shifter with what amounts to amnesia. Its ship crashed in the ocean millennia ago, and it spent so long mimicking various fish and other sea life that it more or less forgot it was intelligent. The story starts when it first encounters humans. It's a pretty good story.

Andre Norton has shapeshifters in some of the books in her Witch World series. Year of the Unicorn has some.

The Jargoon Pard is the first book in one of the (many) sub-series in the over-arching Witch Wordl series. It's about a shapeshifter.

These are fantasy, with, maybe a dash of sci-fi. Ms. Norton tended to mix her genres a bit, especially in this entire series. Magic works, but so does science. A cool world, all in all. There is some romance in some of the books, but it's not the central core of the story.

Trisha | 19 comments If you're okay with urban fantasy, you could try Magic Bites.

It reminded me a lot of the Dresden Files, if you've read that. Typical urban fantasy, but with more of a focus on shape shifters (of many different animals). The main character is not a shape shifter though, but she becomes heavily involved with the shapeshifter faction which seems to be the main storyline for the entire series. There are vampires, but they're not the typical type. They're more like zombies.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 433 comments If you are still looking, and don't mind YA, there's a fantastic fantasy adventure series that features all sorts of animal shifters. WEREWORLD follows the story of fifteen-year-old Drew, a shepherd’s son, as he comes of age and discovers he’s the last of the long line of Werewolves, and rightful (yet reluctant) ruler of the land of Lyssia, where lycanthrope ‘Werelords’ reign. Before long he’s hurtling headlong into an epic journey of fantasy and horror, from one deadly encounter to the next, meeting exotic Werelords at every turn as he’s drawn inexorably towards his destiny. The first book in the series is Rise of the Wolf. I gave every book in the series at least 4 stars.

well, that's funny, here I was asking for suggestions, and that book was already had that book on my "to-read" list. Maybe the notion of vampire trough me off. But more likely, I just add it because two of my favorite authors liked it and promptly forgot it. But now, third recommendation, I have to read it! Thank you very much.

Hey never too much books on my "to-read" list.
To me, the YA designation is rather insignificant. Some classics YA were considered for adults in the old days, some adult books are very light and silly. As long as the story is good and it's well written, bring it on!

Well, this seems very unusual story, I love that in a book. Thanks!

What do you mean by creepy? I guess you read 1 and 2 before you read number 3?
