So the book didn't fulfill those expectations (about the Martians, at least), but it was a great book.

Yes, I have to agree with you. I didn't read the description myself...I never read descriptions.
So I was expecting a Martian really, except his suit kind of gives it away.

Frankly, I didn't have overly high expectations of the book, because I know that bestsellers can be overrated sometimes, but I didn't really expect it to be so bad either.
For me, it is worth all the ruckus. I'm amazed at how extensive the research had to be for that book to be written, and still be entertaining and hilarious.
