There's a steampunk story in there somewhere.
Most (of the non-underwater) don't seem terribly labor-saving or anything... just machines for the sake of novelty.The underwater ones are just bizarre. I wonder if it was a 'the next frontier' mentality....
My favorite is the headphones replacing printed books - they got it about a quarter right.
