So, (view spoiler)
What a character Fermín is! He is just brilliant! Daniel was great too!
Does anyone else think that this would make a really good film or tv series? I, for one, would love to see one.
I have really enjoyed taking part in this buddy read/discussion. Happy reading to those of you who are still working your way through it :)

(view spoiler)
I'm interested in reading the next book now and look forward to hearing other people's thoughts on this book.

About Daniel (view spoiler)

I agree with you about (view spoiler)

So with that setting, reading about the background to the Aldaya house (view spoiler) , the visit to the old governess (view spoiler) , and the other visits to the house (view spoiler) , were way more impacting.
I'm finally getting the whole gothic mystery feel. I wonder if I should read it again some time... yeah right, like I'll ever get through all the other books I want to read in my life to do that.

Definitely, Judy!
Like I recall being quite taken by surprise in chapter 15 to find out that (view spoiler) .
I know that the very biggest surprise for me came much later when on page 377 (view spoiler) .
And I was almost equally shocked by the turn of events on page 384 when it's revealed that (view spoiler) .
After that all the pieces pretty much fell neatly into place. Very entertaining and suspenseful!

Reading by candlelight is very fitting for this book. Sets the ambiance. :)

One complaint I had about the ebook version was the fairly frequent instance of words missing a space between them. Found myself tripping over these instances. Distracting and a bit annoying.
A few quotes I liked from towards the end:
Page 371:(view spoiler) .
Page 445:(view spoiler) .
Page 478:(view spoiler) .

Yes unfortunately it isn't a thing of the past as you say! I read yours and Janice's spoilers about that section (view spoiler)

I really enjoyed that part too Sarah. I think it was one of my favourite parts of the entire book (although I loved it all). I felt the same way about (view spoiler)

I too felt sorry for Daniel (view spoiler)

I'm not far off the end of part 3 now (in chapter 11) (view spoiler)

I thought this book was fantastic and can't wait for the follow ups, although I know the second one doesn't have these characters in.

I was also really glad that (view spoiler)
Does anyone else's copy have bonus material at the end of the book? I own the UK paperback which has a short guide called 'A walk in the footsteps of the Shadow of the Wind' which gives a brief guided tour around some of the locations in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona which featured in or provided inspiration for the story, complete with black and white pictures of some of them. It was a nice way to finish off.

So after having to leave the book today with 1 chpt and 1 page to go for a meeting (computer beeped at me, I dismissed it thinking I had 15 mins. Turns out I had already dismissed it once and forgot about it, had 2 mins to get to the otherside of campus and hadn't printed out any of the budget papers... oops :P), I finished it.
The last quarter of the book was just one reveal after the other. I agree with the above. (don't read this spoiler until you finished) (view spoiler)
Not my favourite read of the year, but I think that was more life circumstances than the book. It's always a bit sad when you recognise a book could have been a 5 starrer if you didn't have other things going on / different headspace. I'll definitely pick up the sequels.

I agree, the last quarter really made your head spin (in a good way). There was so much going on! Just when you thought you had heard it all, something else was revealed!
Are you going to join in The Angel's Game buddy read next month?

I am the same, I always say I should stop buying books and start reading the ones I already own but it never works like that. I always buy more.

The book I will start today is a re-read. When I first read it, I was preoccupied and kept getting distracted by my thoughts. Maybe one day you'll re-read Shadow when you're in a different mind set.

Isn't what we do when we read and discuss a book here on GR kind of like what Daniel's father implied that he would do? We care for them and make sure that they will always be known by posting them on our reading lists, indicating when we buy them and when we are reading them, and tell why we are reading them?
We are all librarians of lost books. I love it!!!

I found an audio copy of the book on Overdrive and spent the whole weekend listening. I do not think I had time to really dwell on some of the bad things that happened in the story. Maybe because the reader's voice made the story so wonderful to listen to, I did not feel all of the gothic darkness maybe I should have felt. I was shocked by some of the things that happened (view spoiler) . I felt sorry for Daniel's father being left out so much. I loved Fermin and his crazy humor. I did spend some time looking things up in Barcelona and a little of the war history. I knew who Franco was and from other books how awful it was in Spain during his rule.
I loved the end too and the way everything was wrapped up.
I know many of you are reading the next book, but like Rusalka, I don't think I can get my head ready for the next one just yet.

I'm just up to Chapter 32 now and have been able to read some of the spoilers. (view spoiler)[I quite like the symmetry between Daniel's life and that of Julian's and I'm curious to know whether his relationship with Bea and Tomas will be affected in a similar way to that or Jorge and Julian. (hide spoiler)]
I liked Janita's story in Chapter 31 (view spoiler)[it really helped unravel some more of the mystery. It seemed to me that Janita became a better surrogate mother than Penelope's actual mother. It always amazes me how in books from back in the day, mothers gave birth but didn't really seem to care and love their children much =/ Most of the time letting others feed and dress and teach them.
I quite like the little we've seen of Janita, she seems like such a nice person and it's sad to just see her thrown out of the Aldaya's and into an asylum =[
It's coming together now with why Julian had to leave Barcelona and why Penelope couldn't get to the train. I'm just wondering how Nuria Montfort fits into this now, as I'm guessing her Miquel is the one from Julian's childhood (hide spoiler)]
