As some of you may (or may not) be aware, I run a book blog, and have done for the past three years. Each November I run an event called Sci-Fi Month, so I have a little challenge for our group: to consume as much science fiction during the month of November as possible! ;) Not just books, but TV shows, films, video games, board games, whatever!

If you fancy joining in, just leave a comment and then throughout the month, keep us up to date on what you've read/watched/played etc.

Additionally, if you own a blog and fancy taking part in SFM on your blog, please take a look at the link above and follow the info there :)

Emma I'm a beginner to Sci FI and fantasy will always be my first love. But I will be making a start on Ilium and Red Sun. Does post apocalyptic count as sci Fi?

I have started with Press Play to Start an Anthology of Scifi Computer game shorts and plan a Back to the Future Marathon this Weekend"

I thought I'd just posted this so excuse me if it comes up twice!
I'm a beginner with sci if with a very unimpressive number of sci if reads under my belt. However I plan to start with Ilium and Red Rising. Does post apocalyptic count as sci fI?

message 6: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

I think most people count post apocalyptic as scifi.
Red Rising is not a bad place to start. I'll be reading its sequel as its BOTM here :-)

Reserved Post for my SF consumption :)

This is great! I plan to check out my Star Trek Online characters who I've neglected for a year plus. A Back to the Future marathon sounds fun. Falling Skies, DS9, Dr Who, The Flash, Dark Matter...so many good shows to catch up on Netflix!

Nov 2: I did a major happy dance at the Star Trek: TNG series coming in 2017! Oh, and The 100 Sn 2 is on Netflix now! Will binge watch Friday night. :D
Nov 4: Started reading Golden Son.
Nov 5: Joined an in-person SciFi book club and went to my first meeting. Had a great time discussing The Martian.
Nov 6: watched 1 episode of Star Trek DS9.
Nov 7: watched 2 episodes of Dark Matter.
Nov 8: watched 3 eps of Walking Dead.
Watched Sn 1 of iZombie. Fun show!

Yup, post-apocalyptic is definitely a sub-genre :)

Emma That will make it easier to meet the challenge :)

I'm in. I will do my best to finish the book I'm on by then but if not I'll start Dune and read them concurrently. It's been on my shelf as long as any other book I think. Figure it's as good of time as any.

Also I'll try to do a speed run of Phantasy Star 4 to throw in there.

message 11: by Susie (last edited Dec 01, 2015 04:10PM) (new)

Susie (susiend104) | 265 comments I can certainly get on board with this!

I'll pick up some sci-fi books, I've been working on the latest Netflix season of Arrow. Not sure I'm going to do either BotM unless I find a good deal or a library, so this should be easy participation! :)

And today (Nov 10) I learned that I can edit posts... *blushes*
Last night I watched Mr. Nobody, which I wasn't too familiar with but it was on Netflix streaming (US). I loved it!
Last week I watched V for Vendetta because I couldn't help myself.
I'm about 2/3 of the way through The Long War, and then plan to start on Seveneves

Nov 13 - Finished the Long War yesterday and intending to move forward as planned today! Read a PKD short story this morning, Piper in the Woods, which was interesting, if a bit predictable.

Dec 1 - It was a busy month, unfortunately! I got 250 pages in to Seveneves, and watched some more Arrow, through S3 E15.

Ooooh I like this!

Reading is difficult for me at the mo, boo little baby!

However, yesterday I watched Star Wars A New Hope and Star Wars Empire Strikes Back - I love the Star Wars films and I watch them often. I am so excited for the new film in December. Got my tickets booked. I think Han is my favourite character. And between me and my husband, we've got a shed load of Star Wars "stuff". Love it!

Sarah | 641 comments How did I miss seeing this post?
I'm totally in.
I plan on reading both Red Rising and Golden Son this month.
Plus I have plenty of Star Wars and Star Trek books I have been wanting to read. Might throw a couple of them on the list.
I will also make a point of hitting up my sci-fi DVD collection. While I certainly won't be able to make it through my whole collection this month, I can certainly make time for a marathon or two of my favorites :)

And yeah, I'm another one who is still working on Ilium.

I plan on reading Golden Son as well and we'll just have to see what else.

message 21: by Ty (last edited Nov 06, 2015 08:44PM) (new)

Ty Wilson (ShatterStar66) | 81 comments It's a few days late, but I'm jumping in. I've just started Golden Son, I'm playing a bit of Borderland: The Pre-Sequel while I wait on my pre-order of Fallout 4. I might find time to play Dead Space 3, too. The last one kept freaking me out, but I'm game to try the next one. I'll add more as the month progresses. May the Force be with you all!

A couple of things I've added: I just read the first issue of the new Mirror's Edge: Exordium #1 comic book. I think it's a prequel to the new video game. I also read Lazarus, Vol. 1: Family. I loved Lazarus and have already ordered the next two books.

I have... the first and third games I think? But I'm kind of terrified to play them. Same with Amnesia...

message 26: by Ty (new)

Ty Wilson (ShatterStar66) | 81 comments I loved the first two Dead Space games, but somehow I never got around to playing the 3rd one. This month sounds like a great excuse to finally do it, even if it causes nightmares.

I wish the new Deus Ex game was out already, that's another series I love, but this will allow me to focus on Fallout 4. Then when the new Deus Ex comes out next year (February, I think) I can have another sci-fi month.

message 27: by Lancer, Warden of the Slums (new)

Lancer (elancer) | 1667 comments Mod
I want to play fallout 4 but university leaves me no time, but will try to get some time in over Christmas. The deus ex series is amazing

message 28: by Andrew (new)

Andrew The first Deus Ex is one of the best games I ever played, especially under the FPS/RPG genre. It has a really cool (if pulpy), intricate, layered conspiracy and sci-fi plot. Multiple ways to solve missions. Lots of customization. I played it at least a dozen times lol

I feel it has aged pretty well, though the difference between technology then and now is still obvious. The ending is cool but also a mild letdown in a way--pretty forgivable for the day it was made.

Deus Ex 2 was utterly disappointing. On it's own, maybe a 5 out of 10. In comparison with the first one, like a 1 or 2.

The recent prequel was pretty cool! I still think the first one has it beat in most departments, but it was a lot of fun, touching on many bases of the first one, and decent replayability :)

message 29: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hm, I never entered any challenges before. I always felt I'll read what I read lol I feel bad enough falling behind in the BOTM department.

But me and my girlfriend have been catching up on The 100 and Dark Matter and will definitely finish it by the end of the month, so if more piled on helps, there it is ;)

I'll be watching The Flash every week if that counts haha Probably Heroes Reborn too--it's not great, but I enjoy it.

I have to apologize to sci fi challenge, I just can't seem to get into Dune at the moment. I'm going to keep trying but I started The Six-Gun Tarot and it has instantly sucked me in. Don't think it counts though. I may have to switch my contributions to movies/games I am going to try to chain watch all 6 star wars movies soon as well as play through Halo 5.

I had that problem with Dune too, Lancer. I've tried two or three times and never get far :/

message 33: by Ty (last edited Nov 07, 2015 05:40AM) (new)

Ty Wilson (ShatterStar66) | 81 comments I tried Dune about 30 years ago and couldn't get into it. Then I tried it again last year and it grabbed me immediately. Dune is an amazing book, but this might not be the right time for you to read it. When the time is right, it'll click for you.

Great idea to watch all the Star Wars movies, and it's always a good time to watch Blade Runner. In fact, I think that's what I'll do tonight.

message 34: by Tom (new)

Tom | 216 comments dune was one of the first Sci fi books I really got into After my brother pretty much forced me to read them (probably his favourite series alongside lotr).
It can be a little hard to grasp at first but once you do they are awesome (except messiah).
I've still never got round to reading his sons books though

message 35: by Lancer, Warden of the Slums (new)

Lancer (elancer) | 1667 comments Mod
I wouldn't say that I'm not enjoying it or don't think that I would, like you all said something just isn't clicking at the moment. It's definitely something I will pick up and try at another time. So I don't think I will consider it a DNF because that would be if I stopped because it sucked, which it doesn't.

John (johnred) Tom wrote: "It can be a little hard to grasp at first but once you do they are awesome (except messiah)."

message 46: by Ashly (last edited Nov 30, 2015 11:08PM) (new)

Ashly (ashlyh) This month was not so great. I finished End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days, #3) by Susan Ee I started reading Press Start to Play by Daniel H. Wilson & Extra Life by Derek Nikitas . I'm in a reading slump right now but I'am enjoying these two books.

Movies Watched:
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) - I loved this movie, it's so underrated.
Lucy (2014) - It was ok.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015) - Its a rewatch but I love this movie. correct me if I'm wrong but I looked it up and it says Science Fiction film.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015) - So emotional, my eyes got watery. I liked it but I loved that part with President Coin and Katness towards the end. That was good.

TV Shows I Watched
Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D
Minority Report (I like it but it got chancelled, last episode was yesterday.)
The Flash (Is it considered Sci-fi?)

Hopefully I will get out of this slump and read more sci-fi books next month.
