Hi everyone!

I am your moderator mentor (i.e. go to person) if there is anything your captains can't answer or need help with, so I'll float around, but my team is Bastet. The other Egyptian teams are your "sister teams" so feel free to go and visit them and share book recommendations, memes, or just chat!

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Hey everyone!
Welcome to the team --- I'm exciting to participate in another tower team challenge. As a way of getting to know one another, let's do a "fast five" set of questions. Please post as soon as possible as a way to "check-in".

Where do you live?
Favorite genre?
Favorite book?
Have you done a team challenge before?
Any ties to Egypt (fav book, experience)?

Also, please accept "friend" requests from other team members (especially the captains). This allows us to view each others shelves -- the captains have to do this to validate books.

message 14: by JoLene (last edited Oct 28, 2015 08:45AM) (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I can start the "fast five"......

1) I live in San Carlos, CA which is pretty close to San Francisco.

2) I don't necessarily have an absolute favorite, but I don't really read horror, much science fiction or straight up romance. However, historical fiction, YA, thrillers and fantasy can all be found on my shelf. I also try to read a classic every once in a while.

3) Always a difficult choice but A Prayer for Owen Meany is definitely up there.

4) I did the first two tower challenges. I haven't done any other team challenge with NBRC but I have run a team "road rally" challenge in the historical fictionistas group.

5) My favorite Egyptian novel is River God by Wilbur Smith. I loved it so much it inspired me to want to visit so that's where I went on my honeymoon 8 years ago! It was fantastic!

message 15: by Tia (last edited Oct 28, 2015 11:54AM) (new)

Tia (fatgirlfatbooks) That's awesome, JoLene! I love San Francisco and the Bay Area, so I'm jealous, haha. I hope to move there within the next two or three years.

Where do you live?
- Wisconsin

Favorite genre?
- It's a toss up between science fiction and non-fiction. It completely depends on my mood.

Favorite book?
- This one is brutal! Favorite book ever would probably be Dune and favorite book recently would be Ready Player One.

Have you done a team challenge before?
- Yes, but quite a while ago.

Any ties to Egypt (fav book, experience)?
- I was obsessed with Egyptian mythology and mummies as a child, but haven't read about either topic in ages.

message 16: by CassieV (new)

CassieV | 1196 comments Hello group! I see a few names/faces that I know by sight :)

I'll answer the questions as well...

1. Where to you live?
Florida...where it hot...still...sigh...

2. Favorite Genre?
YA Fantasy/Paranormal tend to be my favorite, thought I'm really up for anything as long as it's not Horror.

3. Favorite book?
Hmmmm, of all time I'd have to go with the tried and true Pride and Prejudice. For this year I am absolutely in love with the Grisha series (Shadow and Bone), oh and I recently read The Night Circus and it was amazing as well!

4. Have you done a team challenge before?
Yes, many, many, many. They are my Kryptonite ;)

5. Any ties to Egypt?
Beyond loving mythology stories, not really, lol!

message 17: by Sam Lien (new)

Sam Lien (sam_nguyen) | 124 comments Great way to get to know people!
1. Where do you live?
Karuizawa, Japan. It's a really beautiful place but it's frigid right now.

2. Favourite Genre?
I don't have a specific favourite one, but I don't read much horror nor thriller.

3. Favourite Books?
I don't have one most favourite actually.

4. Have you done a team challenge before?
No...

5. Any ties to Egypt?

For TOWER TEAMS we're making The Child Thief by Brom (November's Adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy BOM) an exception.

Meaning, we are granting the page points, participating in discussion points, and DQ's points, as long as you finish the book after the starting date

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Hello Team Khnum,

Just want to give you a few updates. If you have answered the Fast Five questions as a way of introduction.

The co-captains have divided up the responsibilities as follows:

Karla - Book tracker and spreadsheet jockey. To run this challenge, there are lots of things to track (page numbers, goal achievement, points) and Karla will be juggling all of these numbers.

Sam - Social coordinator and fun guru. Sam will help keep things lively and interactive. Group challenges are an opportunity to make some new "book" friends. You don't have to be social but we do ask that you check in once per week.

JoLene - challenge communication and team wrangler. JoLene will interact with the NBRC mods, take care of any team issues and answer any random questions that arise.

In the meantime, start looking through your TBRs while we countdown to challenge start!

Karla, Sam and JoLene

(Karen - maybe you can move this to the top section as well).

message 34: by Sam Lien (new)

Sam Lien (sam_nguyen) | 124 comments Hello guys. Sorry I've been off the whole day. In my place, it was Oct 31 yesterday, and yes, it was HALLOWEEN.

So, in the spirit of this special event, let's do a mini activity.

1. Name a book that reminds you of Halloween (any year, about anything, as long as it makes you think of this event).
2. Why so?
3. Did you/ are you going to dress up for Halloween party? If yes? how?
4. Imagine you are writing a book about Halloween. How would you name it?

Thanks guys! Hope you all have fun ;)

message 35: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Happy belated Halloween --- I'm not sure if it is an international holiday. If your country doesn't have Halloween, is there an equivalent or is it a different time of year?

1-2) Had a hard time thinking of one, but I will go with A Discovery of Witches because in the Diana rejects joining a coven of witches for their Samhain celebration, which falls on Halloween.

3) Didn't dress up -- originally we were going to a party, but it got cancelled. Then our dog hurt her leg so we decided to stay home to keep her calm. Unfortunately we live in a hilly neighborhood so we don't get trick or treaters.

4) No idea --- If I was prone to write a book, I don't think it would be about Halloween ;-)

message 36: by CassieV (last edited Nov 01, 2015 12:29PM) (new)

CassieV | 1196 comments Okay, I'll try to answer these...

1 & 2. Maybe Stardust? It sounds kinda crazy, but there's the evil witch and all in it :)
3. My family did Pokemon Characters this year, from the original show. So my husband was Ash, I was Misty, my daughter was Pikachu and my son was Squirtle.
4. Umm, coming up with names is the worst...How about The Trouble with Halloween...a tale about a girl who gets sucked into different fantasy worlds based on the costumes she meets one Halloween night :)

The Quests

Ardeth: Thebes, City of the Living. Crown jewel of Pharaoh Seti the First. Home of Imhotep, Pharaoh's high priest, keeper of the dead. Birthplace of Anck Su Namun, Pharaoh's mistress. No other man was allowed to touch her. But for their love, they were willing to risk life itself.

Dr. Bey: [stutters in disbelief] Oh, look at this! Sons of the pharaohs! Give me frogs, flies, locusts, anything but YOU! Compared to you the other plagues were a joy!
Evelyn: I am so very sorry. It was an accident.
Dr. Bey: My darling girl, when Ramses destroyed Syria, that was an accident. You are a catastrophe!
01 ~ Read a Book: features pharaoh(s), features accident of any sort, features plague. Frog/insect on cover. OR "Catastrophe" in title

Jonathan: [Jonathan hands Evie a strange box] My whole life I've never found anything, Evie. *Please* tell me I've found something.
Evelyn: [Evelyn opens the strange box, inside lies an ancient map] Jonathan?
Jonathan: Yes?
Evelyn: I think you found something.
02 ~ Read a book: features a map, features someone down on their luck, features a major find of some sort. Strange/unique box on cover. OR "Map" in title.

Evelyn: Mister O'Connell, can you look me in the eye, and guarantee me that this isn't all some kind of a flimflam? Because I am warning you…
Rick: You're 'warning me'? Listen, lady, let me put it to you this way. My whole damn garrison believed in the legend of Hamunaptra so much, that - without orders - they marched halfway across Libya and into Egypt just to 'find' that city. And when we got there... all we found was sand, and blood.
03 ~ Read a book: features an army/soldiers, features a legend, features long trip. Sand or blood on cover. OR "Legend" in title.

Beni: [after shipwreck] Hey, O'Connell! It looks to me like I've got all the horses!
Rick: Hey, Beni! Looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river!
04 ~ Read a Book: features shipwreck, features horses, features river. Horses or River on cover. OR "Wrong Side" in title.

Evelyn: Oh my God it's a... it's a sarcophagus. Buried at the base of Anubis. He must have been someone of great importance. Or he did something *very* naughty.
05 ~ Read a Book: features something large that is buried/unearthed, features a dog/Anubis, features a person in power. Read an erotica/steamy romance. OR "Naughty" in title.

Evelyn: Look, I... I may not be an explorer, or an adventurer, or a treasure-seeker, or a gunfighter, Mr. O'Connell, but I am proud of what I am.
Rick: And what is that?
Evelyn: I... am a librarian.
06 ~ Read a Book: features an explorer, adventurer, treasure-seeker, gunfighter or librarian. Library on cover. OR "Librarian" in title.

Rick: That's called "stealing," you know.
Evelyn: According to you and my brother it's called "borrowing."
Rick: I thought the book of Amun-Ra was made out of gold.
Evelyn: It is made out of gold. This isn't the Book of Amun-Ra, this is something else. I think this may be the Book of the Dead.
Rick: The Book of the Dead? Are you sure you want to be playing around with this thing?
Evelyn: It's just a book. No harm ever came from reading a book.
07 ~ Read a Book: features a book that is "evil", features bad things happening from reading book. Has all gold cover, has all black cover. Book(s) on cover. OR "Book of the Dead" in title.

Ardeth: I told you to leave or die, you refused, and now you may have killed us all. For you have unleashed the creature that we have feared for more than four thousand years.
Rick: Relax, I got him.
Ardeth: No mortal weapons can kill this creature. He is not of this world.
08 ~ Read a Book: features life or death situation, features creature not of earth (alien, mythological). Weapon on cover, creature on cover. OR "Mortal" in title.

Evelyn: Listen we've got to do something! Once the creature's been reborn his curse is going to spread until the whole of the earth is destroyed!
Rick: And is that my problem?
Evelyn: Well it is everybody's problem!
Rick: Evelyn, I appreciate you saving my life and all but when I signed on I agreed to take you out there and bring you back, end of job, end of story, contract terminated!
Evelyn: Oh, that's all I am to you, a contract?
Rick: Ok look, you can either tag along with me or stay here... and try to save the world! What's it gonna be?
09 ~ Read a Book: features end of world, features a contract. Read a Dystopia. Suitcase on cover, destroyed world on cover. OR "Problem" in title.

Beni: Mr. Burns, Prince Imhotep thanks you for your hospitality.
Mr. Burns: No.
Beni: And for your eyes, and for your tongue.
Mr. Burns: Wha?
Beni: But I'm afraid more is needed. The prince must finish the job. And consummate the curse which you and your friends have brought down upon yourselves.
10 ~ Read a Book: features a prince, features a grateful character. Eyes on cover, tongue on cover, group of people (at least 4) on cover. OR "Curse" in title.

Evelyn: There is only one person I know that can possibly give us any answers. [sees Ardeth Bay] You?
Dr. Bey: Miss Carnahan. Gentlemen. [the men draw their guns and point them at Ardeth]
Evelyn: [about Ardeth] What is HE doing here?
Dr. Bey: Do you really want to know, or would you prefer to just shoot us?
Rick: After what I just saw, I'm willing to go on a little faith here.
Dr. Bey: We are part of an ancient secret society. For over three thousand years we have guarded the City of the Dead. We are sworn at manhood to do any and all in our power to stop the High Priest Imhotep from being reborn into this world.
Ardeth Bay: Now, because of you, we have failed.
Evelyn: And you think this justifies the killing of innocent people?
Dr. Bey: To stop this creature? Let me think...
Ardeth Bay, Dr. Bey: YES!
11 ~ Read a Book: features a secret society/group, features innocent groups of people killed, features small group against large enemy/situation. Ancient city on cover. OR "Secret" in title.

Evelyn: They mixed the books up. Mixed up where they were buried. So if the black book is inside the statue of Anubis... then the golden book must be inside...
Jonathan: Come on, Evie. Faster.
Evelyn:Patience is a virtue.
Rick: Not right now it isn't.
Jonathan:I think I'll go and get the car started.
Evelyn:I've got it. The Book of Amun-Ra is at...
Hamunaptra inside the statue of Horus. Take that, Bembridge scholars.
12 ~ Read a Book: features something not where it should be, features someone finding out the truth. Has a black AND gold cover, bird/Horus on cover. OR "Patience" in title.

Dr. Bey: It's the creature. He's fully regenerated.
Imhotep: Keetah mi pharos aja nilo, isirian.
Beni: [translating] "Come with me, my princess. It is time to make you mine, forever."
Evelyn: [corrects Beni] "For all eternity," idiot.
Imhotep: Kootash de na... aja nilo.
Beni: [translating] "Take my hand and I will spare your friends."
[Rick scoffs]
Evelyn: Have you got any bright ideas?
Rick: I'm thinking, I'm thinking...
Evelyn: You better think of something fast, because, if he turns me into a mummy you're the first one I'm coming after.
13 ~ Read a Book: features someone being taken to save others, features a princess, features a mummy. Mummy on cover. OR "Eternity" or "Forever" in title.

Winston: So, what's your little problem got to do with His Majesty's Royal Air Corps?
Rick: Not a damn thing.
Winston: Is it dangerous?
Rick: Well, you probably won't live through it.
Winston: By Jove, do you really think so?
Jonathan: Well, everybody else we've bumped into has died. Why not you?
Winston: What's the challenge, then?
Rick: Rescue the damsel in distress, kill the bad guy, save the world.
14 ~ Read a Book: features damsel in distress, features saving the world, features main/secondary character killed off. Airplane on cover. OR "Rescue" in title.

Jonathan: Well, I guess we go home empty handed. Again.
Rick: I wouldn't say that. [Kisses Evie]
Jonathan: Oh please. [to his camel] How about you darling, would you like a little kissy-wissy?
15 ~ Read a Book: features boy gets the girl, features HEA. Treasure on cover, couple kissing on cover. OR "Kiss" in title.

Sam Lien (sam_nguyen) | 124 comments So I guess I'd do this also:

1+2. I'd go with Coraline. I read this book a long time ago since I was quite young. It's a nice book, darkish kind of fairy tales.

3. We had a party at my school, but I didn't dress up.

4. If I do write a book about Halloween, I think I'd entitle it Upon the mountain, just because I think it's kinda creepy if you spend your halloween in the mountain, among the trees.

Have a nice day everyone!

message 40: by Tia (new)

Tia (fatgirlfatbooks) 1. Dracula.
2. Because what is more quintessentially Halloween than vampires?!
3. I was going to go trick-or-treating with my little brother as Dipper and Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls, but he backed out because he was "too old" - boo!
4. Oh, jeez. Great question. I have no idea, though!

Also, the mini-challenge looks AWESOME! They're really putting so much thought and time into this!

Here is a quick history of Halloween. It was introduced to the US from the Irish.
It was not a "thing" in Australia when I was growing up, but has become popular over the last 5-10 years which makes retailers happy ;)

4. Imagine you are writing a book about Halloween. How would you name it? I have an idea for a novel set in a cemetery and I think I want to call it The Welcome Wagon. Now, I just need to figure out how to get it from my head to the paper.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I was looking at my upcoming books to see if any map to The Mummy quest above.

I think that I will cover 10) with The Boys in the Boat Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown --- there are at least 4 people on the cover

I'm also planning to read East of Eden. I saw the movie a long time ago but have never read it. I think it would work for covering 14) with someone getting killed (not positive though).

One question -- the last quest has features HEA -- what is that?

CassieV | 1196 comments My planned November books and where they might fit

Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels, #8) by Ilona Andrews #8 - I'm sure there will be life or death situations; most likely #11 - small group against large enemy/situation

Moonglow (Darkest London, #2) by Kristen Callihan #8 - Life or death; #11 - Secret society; #14 - damsel in distress

Throne of Jade (Temeraire, #2) by Naomi Novik #3 - Soldiers

Labyrinth (Languedoc, #1) by Kate Mosse #2 - Major find; #6 - Treasure seeker?; #5 - Something buried/unearthed

I'll have more, but I have to leave some place for books required by surprise reveals in other challenges. I think what we need to identify is which (if any of these) we would be unable to cover.

Sam Lien (sam_nguyen) | 124 comments Hey guys. I have a question. For The Mummy quest, do we have to find books that satisfy everything mentioned for each number? For example, number 15, "features boy gets the girl, features HEA. Treasure on cover, couple kissing on cover". All of these?

Thanks

I want to read Magic Shifts this TT too!
Oh and Labyrinth is a great book. The series is interesting as they are companion books rather than a connected series, and I liked this first one and the third one the best. Audiobook version has great narration too
