Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments My tentative list is becoming quite mixed so far. It seems to be about half YA, and a good few classics and really long books. Hopefully it balances out decently.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments How are people handling the "16th book on your TBR" category? My TBR list is set to random, but the order changes every single time I look at it. Considering most of my books are coming from the library, it will probably end up being "16th at the time when I place the order from the library/go to the library".

It just feels like I can cheat the system too easily if I don't like what book comes up as 16th. Just refresh the list, and I have another shot.

Joy | 100 comments I've been struggling with that one too, Rachel. I usually have my TBR list set to newest to oldest, so it changes every time I add books. I think I will try to be honest with myself, keeping it as normal as possible, and just use the 16th book when that week gets here.

message 54: by Michelle (last edited Dec 21, 2015 06:25PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Mine is random too. I counted out the 16th book and changed it's number to 16 (where GoodReads assigns it a number based on when it was added to your list). Then I put it on my list and cemented it as my choice. If anything changes at this point, I'm keeping that as #16. It was #16 when I made the list so... that's that (for me, at least).

Mine is the sixteenth based on "date added". I guess since the category isn't very specific, you can base it however you like as long as it's considered the 16th in some way.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments Another somewhat random question -- what do you think of using children's books to fulfill list requirements? Even though they're not against the rules (as far as I've seen), I've always been hesitant to choose children's books in these kinds of challenges unless the category specifically calls for it. I picked a few last year for the PopSugar challenge (ie. Peter Rabbit for "a banned book") but it sometimes felt like the easy way out. I'm not opposed to picking children's books or YA, just wondered how everyone else approaches it.

I felt like since I had a bunch of books that're really long, I was entitled to have children's books to balance things out. When I looked at my stats, I averaged at 300 pages per book, so that helped in not making me feel guilty. :)

Same here. Just looking at my tentative list for the year, and many of the books are 300+ pages, so I also think I'll be inclined to throw in a few children's books...especially for categories that are more difficult for me to find.

For some reason, I'm having a ridiculously hard time finding a book about someone in a profession that interests me. I have a few professions in mind (teacher, professor, author, social worker, etc.) but have had very little luck finding books about any of those...or at least fiction.

The same goes for a book about a hobby or passion I have. I was going to pick either reading or writing, but it's been tough to find something even though I'm sure there are tons.

I've heard that On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King is really good. That could work for writing as a passion/hobby.

message 60: by Michelle (last edited Dec 21, 2015 08:21PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Rachel, a lot of people in the group have done that so you're not alone if you're considering it. Personally, I don't see an issue with reading children's books for the challenge. The official group stance on this has always been to allow members to read whatever they like. The challenge is supposed to be as difficult or as easy as the challenge goer wants it to be. We're not about policing people's reading material or shaming them for not reading highbrow literature. Above all, we want you to have fun! :D

I also had a hard time with that one so I decided to have fun with it and went with the occupation of "ghost hunter." It doesn't specify that it has to be a real occupation so, if you're really stuck that's something to consider! :)

For the 16th one, I'm just leaving it blank until it's time to read that task and then I'll see what the current #16 is on my list :)

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 984 comments Hey, folks! I got a question!

22. The first book in a new to you series

Does it mean I should read the first book of a series I never read but I heard about before OR a serie I never heard about until 31th Dec? Help me (:

message 66: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments I have to say that I began filling the prompts with quite narrow/restricted interpretations in mind, but now that I've moved on to the Rejects challenge, I find myself accepting even the looser interpretations.

The point is to have fun after all, and if a book fits just a tiny bit, I'd say go for it. Because you only have to convince yourself that your way of thinking is correct, no matter what :) And we are here to read lots of enjoyable stuff rather than nitpick about it.

Stacey D. | 1908 comments Hi All/Moderators,

I just came across a nice blog called "The Millions" announcing new books coming out during the first part of the year. The blurbs on each are good, with author recommendations/quotes lending support.

Thought you may like to include the link to help readers make their selection for Week 52: A book published in 2016:

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Thanks Stacey, this will definitely help me reading more 2016 books (as if I needed help to read more books :P)

message 69: by Stacey (new)

message 72: by Léa (new)

Léa (thedaysofhalcyon) | 2 comments Sorry iff this question has been asked before, I couldn't find an answer: for the 'top 100 mystery novels' and 'top 100 fantasy novels', is there a specific list this refers to? Because when I type this on Google, I have a million different results so basically I could read any mystery or fantasy and it would still fit in there haha

Hey Lea...if you go here...

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You will find lists of suggestions. It's located under the MOD CORNER section, in the list of "Suggestions for each week" topic!

Hope this helps for this or other topic suggestion needs :)

Thank you so much :D

message 75: by Kim (new)

Kim Question: How do you create your list? Is it a feature/function of the TBR Shelf or copy/paste into a new comment. How do you add the title/author and book icons.

message 76: by Kim (new)

Kim Wasn't quite finished - I assume no one is re-typing the entire list! I would like to build my list but will only be reading 26 books. Please advise. Thanks!

message 77: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Kim, it's a copy-paste in a new topic. Go there:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Then click on "new topic" on the top-right.
Add a title to your plan/topic, paste the categories and then you can use "add book/author" (top right of the comment box) to link your choices.

message 78: by Sophia (new)

Sophia What does readers choice mean for the book list?

message 79: by Zaz (new)

message 82: by Jan (new)

Jan Hansen | 1 comments Hi, I'm new and I'm starting on week 10. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Murakami, Haruki. Hope to have something more to contribute soon.

message 83: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Welcome! Feel free to create a discussion post for the book in the A-Z section (under "W"). You can also respond to the progress post for week 10 and create a person plan in the "2016 Plans" section :)

message 84: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments As it's a reading challenge, it's a little "out of topic" but you can use your new one for the category "52. A book published in 2016" and there's also "13. Reader's Choice" :)

message 85: by Jayana (new)

Jayana (agentjay007) Can't wait to read The Fray Theory by Nelou Keramati! This might as well win the 2016 Best Book on Goodreads. Fangirlin!

message 86: by Anna (new)

Anna (librairieimaginaire) So I was really late to joining this group but I've already read 62 books so far this year. Can I use some of the books I've already read for the weeks I missed? I see that not everyone does it in order though, so I will be reading some new ones for weeks that really intrigue me now.

message 87: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Yes, you can use the books read this year if they fit the categories. And you're totally free to read out of order :)

message 88: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (TheSlothReader) I'm not sure where the appropriate place to post this would be but I finished my challenge and filmed a video review and I thought I'd share it with you guys.
