Char | 17464 comments My absolute favorite Gifune book so far is The Rain Dancers. Gifune's writing is intense, atmospheric and beautiful.

Other Gifune books I have enjoyed include:
The Bleeding Season
A View from the Lake
Devil's Breath

Hey, Charlene, this offer for a free audiobook of Gilfune's THE BLEEDING SEASON may be of interest to you (and others).

VERY COOL, Deacon! Thank you! It's one of my favorite Gifune reads.

Edited to add that I checked my email and there it was! Thanks again. :)

Donna | 49 comments Honestly, I've enjoyed everything by him, all 4 or 5 star ratings from me!
I first discovered him over 10 years ago with his collection Heretics and own everything he has written since.
Charlene's recommendations are bang on.

Hi, Donna! Thanks. :)

Francisco Ponce palmero | 107 comments Where is he in the spectrum of horror, quiet horror or extreme horror? or some middle place in the line of Stephen King or Bentley Little?

message 8: by Donna (new)

Donna | 49 comments I would say quiet to middle.
I would rank A View from the Lake or another one called Saying Uncle as more quiet like Charles Grant. Definitely not extreme horror which is why I like him so much.

message 9: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I'm currently reading Orphans of Wonderland, based on that I'd say he's literary/quiet horror, not light, but also not brutal. More psychological.

message 10: by Char (new)

Char | 17464 comments Agreed, Donna and Amanda. Psychological and atmospheric.

message 11: by Robert (last edited Nov 03, 2015 10:40AM) (new)

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments Psychological and atmospheric is spot on - agree 100%! Though I will say that while the violence isn't extreme, the emotions definitely can be. I personally felt like Saying Uncle was a strong punch in the gut in terms of the emotions it evoked. Not an easy read by any stretch, but an excellent one, that I won't soon forget.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet but that ranks very high on the "WTF" meter for me is Long After Dark. It is left entirely up to the reader to decide what is real, and what is in the mind of the protagonist, and it is creepy as can be!

message 12: by Char (new)

Char | 17464 comments I'm pretty sure I have that one, Robert. I will have to move it up in my TBR. I have a couple more Gifune books that I'm sort of saving, if you know what I mean. That way I know that I always have some on hand to read.

message 13: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Taylor (tim_taylor) | 56 comments Greg Gifune is sorely an underappreciated author. Not by those who have read him. They will sing his praises all day. But there are too many who have never read him or never heard of him.

My first and still my favorite of his is Saying Uncle. And I'll also echo Robert on Long After Dark. That's also in my top five of Gifune's books.

But if you read him, you have to read The Bleeding Season. A must read for any fan of dark fiction.

Char | 17464 comments Well said, Tim.:)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 958 comments I've only read the novella The Rain Dancers, but he writes well. Want to get more of his stuff later.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

So far, I've only read Saying Uncle. It was an interesting read, but I expected a more "typical" horror novel, and it wasn't one at all, but more a dark nostalgic/coming-of-age tale like Mystic River.

I just finished that one this morning - it was excellent!

Char | 17464 comments Yep, it is. :)

Gifune is surreal, atmospheric horror at its best. I'm slowly but surely making my way through his catalog and I have yet to come across anything of his that wasn't excellent. A real gem in the horror genre.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 958 comments Can't wait to read more of his stuff then. I love surreal and atmospheric.
