Steve Parcell | 912 comments Truth is far scarier than Fiction so read - Zodiac, The Riverman, Bind Torture KIll, The Last Victim.
Fiction - Kiling the Shadows, Kisscut, Kiss the Girls and Body Rides.
A couple of Dean Koontz serial killer ones are good as well.

Gory, harsh, brutal and around before Red Dragon:

Act of Love by Joe Lansdale

I would also like to recommend Robert Bloch as the creepy uncle and godfather of the serial killer subgenre. His most famous creation is, of course, Psycho, but many of his other works deal with serial killers as well, for example Night of the Ripper or American Gothic.

Boxcar Shorty (boxcarshorty) | 20 comments I second the Robert Bloch suggestion. One of the greats in my opinion. I'd also recommend John Lutz's Frank Quinn series. They're a bit formulaic at times bur Lutz is a solid writer and his books are always entertaining.

I've seen the movie American Psycho and really enjoyed it. And I've looked at the book but never read it. Is it a page turner or slow?

That was a great book.

Here's a serial killer suggestion: Serial Killers Uncut Serial Killers Uncut by Blake Crouch

I just finished it and it's really good, all it is is Serial Killers.
