I attended David Sibley's Drumlin Farms, MassAudubon, talk today (3/30/14) on his new book. He said he uses his sketching to get to know his birds: the better we know our subjects, the better we can draw them. (How true!) Hearing Sibley talk about his work made me that much more interested in his creations. He started birding as a small child and had plans for a field guide when just in his teens. After the talk we went for a walk in the fields at Drumlin: you should hear him do a barred owl call!
